Obituary: Margaret Smith Mines, 84, passed away peacefully at Cartersville Medical on 24, 2010 after a lengthy battle with cancer. Mrs. Mines, daughter of Edith ant Smith and William Maxwell Smith was born in Cartersville, Georgia on May 28, 1926. She spent most of her life in Cartersville where she was active in the community and in her church, Sam Jones United Methodist Church. She graduated from Cartersville High School and held a BA in Fine Arts from Wesleyan . She also attended Shorter and the University of Georgia to obtain her teaching certification. At the age of 14, Margaret won a scholarship to Federal Art School, which was the beginning of her 70 year career as an artist. She also taught in the city school system, primarily art education, as well as offering public and private lessons. She also started the first art day camp in this area at her home. She was a charter member of the 1st art organization in the city or county, The Etowah Creative arts Council. She served as an officer in the Georgia Arts Council and was a docent at the Booth Western Art Museum. As a commission artist, her work was shown throughout the southeast and she was the recipient of many awards, both locally and throughout the state. Her work can be viewed at www.minesart.com. Mrs. Mines was preceded in death by her parents and by her husband, Robert E. Mines Sr. Survivors include a daughter, Margaret Dianne Mines, and a son, Robert E. (Bob) Mines Jr. and his wife Nancy Mines; granddaughters Lori Adams and Anna Mines; and great grandsons Jackson Adams and Cooper Adams. Members of the Bible Seekers School Class and her bridge club will serve as honorary pallbearers. Dr. Thomas Guffin, Myron Baynes, Landon Adams, Walt Studard, Mike Haswell, and Jim Haigler will serve as pallbearers. Visitation will be held from at Owen on , 27, 2010 from 4:00 till 7:00 P.M. The Service will be held at Sam Jones United Methodist Church on , 28, 2010 at 2:00 P.M. with Rev. Bill Burch officiating. Burial will follow at the family plot in Oak Hill . Obituary: Linda Louise Mines, age 68, of Marietta passed away on the evening of , 12, 2015. Linda was born to James William Mines and Nellie Worley Mines on 15, 1946 in Marietta, Georgia. She was known for her great sense of humor and could find something to smile about every day. She was spirited, well loved, and shared her opinion on everything. Linda will be remembered for her love of animals and her infamous popsicles. She enjoyed sewing and had brought much joy making wedding dresses, suits, and sewing military patches for the gentlemen and ladies at Dobbins Air Force Base. Although she had worked many professions, she retired from her last position as a Certified Nurse Assistant. She enjoyed spending time with her family and furbabies. Linda Louise Mines is survived by her four sisters, Brenda J. Sutor of Marietta, Penny Thompson of Acworth, Margaret Ellis of Columbus, and Lisa Donley of Marietta; nephew, David Wayne Sutor of Everette, Washington; two nieces, Tracy Christine Sutor of Marietta and Karen Sutor Purvis of Greenville, North Carolina; and a host of great nieces & nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. Obituary: John Van Horne Miner, Jr, 88, passed away on , 23, 2015. He was born in Daytona Beach, Florida on 24, 1926. His parents were Arline Crenshaw Miner and John Van Horne Miner. In his youth, John was a lifeguard at Daytona Beach. He graduated from Seabreeze High School, where he was salutatorian. graduation, he attended the Georgia Institute of Technology. During World War II, John enlisted in the U.S. Navy, and he entered the officer training corps at Georgia Tech. He received his commission in 1946. In 1944, he met the love of his life, Cecil Thomas, of Uniontown, Alabama. were married on 10, 1946. celebrated their 68th anniversary in 2014. earning his bachelor’s degrees in Naval and Civil Engineering and his master’s degree in Civil Engineering at Georgia Tech, John entered the U.S. Public Service, working in Cincinnati, Ohio and Natchidoches, Louisiana. John returned to Atlanta in 1950. He joined the Taulman in 1955 working in sales. He retired in 1993 as President of the Taulman Sales . John's three daughters were the joy of his life. John and Cecil were long-time communicants at the Cathedral of St. Philip, where John was elected to the Cathedral Chapter on multiple occasions, serving as both Junior and Senior Warden. He was Head Verger for many years. John was an avid hunter and fisherman. He relished time spent in nature. John had a great love for Cumberland Island, his church, his family, and the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. He served on the board of the Alexander-Tharpe Athletic Fund for many years. In retirement, John enjoyed traveling, visiting with his family and friends, and his work in the walk in ministry at St. Philip's. He was predeceased by his parents and a brother, Lucien Foye Miner. He is survived by his wife, Cecil; his daughters Linda Carswell (Nathaniel) of Louisville, KY, Lois Yates (Danny) of Atlanta, Peggy Hawkins (Charles) of St George Island, FL; grandchildren Jennifer Daniel (Roger) of Danville, KY, Nathaniel Carswell of Louisville, KY, John Carswell (Greta) of Franklin, TN, Katie Carswell of Louisville, KY, Maggie Fischer (Brooks) of Atlanta, Daniel Yates (Julie) of Atlanta, Lucie Hawkins of New York, NY, Laura Hawkins of Cumberland Island, GA, Caroline Hawkins of Athens, GA; and thirteen great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held , 26th at 2:00pm at the Cathedral of St Philip. The family will receive friends following the service in Child Hall. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Cathedral of St. Philip. |
