Obituary: Audrey Lenora Buntin Lopardo was born on 16, 1939 to Mary (deceased) and John Buntin (deceased) in Flemmings Montserrat, West Indies. Audrey was a beautiful, brown skin baby who was always full of smiles and laughter. The sixth of nine siblings, Audrey grew up a sweet, friendly little girl. Her loving spirit grabbed everyones attention, but what distinguished her most from all others was her voice. From an early age, Audrey had the voice of an angel that captivated all who heard it. When she was only seven years old, she sang the Italian song Santa Lucia in church. As soon as she finished, the congregation went wild; and a nurse from the village, who was sitting in the back, walked up to the front of the church, slapped money down on the table in front of her and said shes paying to hear her sing it again - and Audrey happily obliged!
As a young girl, Audrey reveled in the love shared between her and her sisters, and brother, and the many wonderful hours spent walking to school, climbing mango trees along the way and enjoying the fruits of their labors. Audrey attended Salem Government School during her younger elementary years. In class she was a little chatter box, as well as Teacher Georges favorite student. Audrey continued her studies in Salem Government School until the age of 10 when she moved to Antigua and attended Judge Hill Elementary. completing her coursework there, Audrey went on to Post Primary Program in St. Johns, Antigua. She excelled in her educational pursuits and in 1956 left for England and was accepted into the nursing program at Harold Wood General Hospital in Harold Wood, Essex, where she graduated as a Registered State Certified Nurse. Post this initial training, Audrey went on to Royal Hampshire Hospital in Winchester where she received her certification as a Midwife. Soon after this achievement, Audrey left for America where she began her nursing career in America as a School District Nurse for the New York City Department and later spent the remainder of her career as a Medical-Surgical Nurse and a Psychiatric Nurse for Richmond Memorial Hospital, which later became Staten Island University Hospital in Staten Island, NY. She dedicated over 30 years of her life to this field where she cared for and nursed hundreds of people back to health with her medical expertise, as well as her love and compassion in general.
When she arrived in America, Audrey resided in Brooklyn, NY. There she lived her with sister Mariel at East 56th street, and later with her sister Liniel, brother-in-law Stafford, and other family members in the home on Schenectady Avenue. A young woman with no children of her own, Audrey loved, reared and nurtured her nieces and nephews with a passion! She took great interest in their overall care, actively participated with them at their schools, helped them with their homework and ensured they were treated fairly and according to their true value at all times! She was that aunt who made sure her niece Sandy was placed in her correct grade level and not the grade level below that the school incorrectly insisted upon when Sandy came from the West Indies. She was that aunt who, when alerted to the fact that someone was bothering her nephew Junior, or Ju Puntz as she affectionately called him, ran out of the house down Schenectady Avenue, while still putting on her clothes, to make sure those bullies knew never to mess with him or any one of her own again. That was Audrey and her passion for her children!
Audreys life was filled with her devotion to her family and to her nursing career. In 1963 she spent some time working in a local hospital in East New York, Brooklyn. Audrey always gave the utmost care and attention to her patients. But there was one patient who wanted more of her attention and wouldn rest until he got it! That patient was none other than Philip Lopardo and after she rejected him numerous times, Audrey finally agreed to go out with him.and the rest is history! Audrey and Phil lived one of the greatest love stories ever told! From the very beginning of their lives together, they spent every waking moment pulling out of life all things good, and creating the standard for what it means to be in love and live life to the fullest! Phil courted Audrey with fabulous trips and weekend getaways, and concerts with Motown legends like The Temptations and The Four Tops. Phil soon realized Audreys devotion and passion for her family, which resulted in him courting the entire family - trips to Coney Island, movies, concerts, and outings to the ice cream parlor were the norm for Audreys sisters, nieces and nephews. These traditions Audrey and Phil established with the family, remained throughout their earthly existence together.
Audrey married Phil on 2nd, 1968. left Brooklyn for Staten Island where they continued to grow in love and just an overall excitement for life. Audreys excitement grew to new heights when her sister Leona and niece Sandy also moved to Staten Island. Audrey loved the apartment complex where they all lived and was so happy to have her dear sister and niece close by to share these new moments of her new life with Phil.
Throughout the early years of their marriage, Audrey and Phil both pursued careers in entertainment; Phil as a jazz drummer and Audrey as a singer/vocalist. Audrey took vocal lessons to further develop the golden voice God granted her; she even did some operatic voice training. Once ready, Audrey auditioned for various Broadway plays, one of which being the timeless African-American opera, Porgy & Bess. a few attempts, Audrey landed a leading role in a Broadway play based on the Kennedy family. However, due to the Ted Kennedy car accident that took place in Chappaquiddick Island, and the continued...
