Obituary: On 9, 1933, Raymond Morris Lewis was born to John Lewis (born a Jew in London, England as Samuel Liebowitz) and Helen Freeburg Lewis in San Francisco, California. Helen was a young, adventurous beauty, and John an accomplished soldier who began his military career as a teenager when he was drafted into the British Army during WWI; he then became a naturalized American citizen and joined the United States Army before changing branches of service and joining the United States Navy and climbed up through the ranks until he retired Full Commander. But when Helen received word that John was lost at sea when his ship was bombed, the struggle to raise 4 boys on her own proved to be too much and Helen was forced to place Ray, his older brother, Jack, and his two younger brothers, Ron and Gene, in a children’s home in Marine called Sunny Hills Presbyterian Children’s . Helen eventually remarried (Arnold Werbelow) and had two more children, Larry and Arlene. The boys grew up in Sunny Hills and did not see family much except for during a period of recovery after Ray contracted polio at the age of nine before returning to Sunny Hills. Instead of reflecting on the negatives of being raised in an orphanage, Ray credited his years at Sunny Hills with his exposure to the San Francisco Opera House (where he developed a passion for opera and classical music—often singing along in Italian or German), music lessons (where he learned to play the harmonica and clarinet), 4-H Club (where he and his brothers raised prize-winning hogs, and rabbits for the fair), boxing (which was required of the boys in order to resolve their differences in the gym), an interest in various hobbies (such as collecting stamps, coins, and gem stones), a passion which he enjoyed throughout his life and shared with many others, sports such as track, and tennis (which he continued to play competitively until about 5 years ago), and of course his beloved San Francisco teams, the San Francisco 49ers (there was never a greater, more loyal fan!) , the San Francisco Giants, and lately, especially the Golden State Warriors (who finally won a championship after 40 years!), and his love of nature which he acquired during his exploits in the hills and in the red wood forests, San Francisco Bay, and the Pacific Ocean nearby. Years later, Ray and his brothers discovered their father was one of two men who had survived the attack on their ship and they were able to reconnect with him and his new wife and Ray was able to lead them both to the Lord before they died. It wasn’t until he was 18 that his interest in a girl led him to discover church and then more importantly, God Himself. As Ray grew in his relationship with God, his new found passion led him to his interest in foreign missions. Ray decided to prepare for the mission field by going to Western Baptist Bible in of 1952. There he met and fell in love with Janet Agnew. became engaged shortly before Ray was enlisted in the Army for the Korean War in of 1954. When he returned in of 1956, he and Janet were married and Ray completed his B.A. in Bible and Missions in 1958. Brent, Phillip, and Charlotte came along during those years of preparation (and I’m sure helped to prepare them for ministry in more ways than one!). When the kids were 4, 2, and 6 months, Ray and Janet packed up their belongings and supplies into big steel drums and boarded a cargo ship as the only passengers and headed for Brazil with ABWE in of 1962. Ray and Janet went to Portuguese language school on the Atlantic coast in Fortaleza, Ceara before moving interior to begin sharing the Gospel and planting churches. It was here they fell in love with the Brazilian people and ministry became relationships as they became intricately involved with peoples’ lives as they walked with them through desperate circumstances of poverty, death, disease, and spiritual darkness. Twenty years later, one of their converts had grown up and become mayor of the growing village and what was once a dry, impoverished, unknown and insignificant village in the eyes of the world had become known as the “fruit-basket” of that area of Brazil where there was a strong group of Christians meeting regularly to encourage one another in the faith and impact their community for Christ. As the needs of the family changed, Ray and Janet chose to join the mission work that was going on in the South of Brazil in Sao Paulo where there the kids could live at home and attend Pan American Christian Academy in the outskirts of the city rather than live at boarding school far away from home as they had done in their early years. Ray and Janet were again involved in church-planting but in addition Ray began teaching Biblical Archeology and History at the seminary downtown. On 17, 1974, Ray’s wife, Janet Marion Lewis, went home to be with the Lord at the age of 39 when another driver hit her car head on, killing her and her missionary co-worker n the passenger seat, and severely injuring two more missionary co-workers in the back seat before he died three weeks later. struggling for more than a year to recover his family, a decision was made to return to the United States for some rest. During this time Ray reconnected with a former missionary from Brazil whom he and Janet had welcomed as a teacher at the Fortaleza Academy boarding school on the coast of Brazil where Brent, Phil, and Char had lived and attended school as children. In the fall of 1975, Ray and Nancy Crosser were married in Michigan where Nancy was living at the time. Ray and Nancy then returned to Brazil where they served in the Baptist continued... |
