Obituary: Carolyn Reese Lavender, a Middleburg resident of 34 years, died after a prolonged illness. She is survived by Bob, her husband of 55 years, daughters Karen Cunningham and Debbie Stahr and their husbands from Ohio, by five grandchildren, and by many brothers and sisters of the Reese family in Pensacola. She was a woman who cared deeply about the people and the world around her; and she made a difference on many levels wherever she went. We will all be diminished by her loss. A memorial service will be held to honor her at 3:30 this afternoon at the Hardage-Giddens Rivermead , 127 Blanding Boulevard, Orange Park. Donations may be sent in lieu of flowers to the Orange Park Womens Club - 501C3: Carolyn Lavender Scholarship Fund, c/o Treasurer Barbara Plant, 1000 St. Johns Ave., Green Cove Springs, Fl, 32043. Carolyn became a Girl Scout leader to give her daughters the benefit of a scouting experience. As a wife of a naval officer, she contributed to the base her husband was stationed at by becoming a member, and eventually president of the Officers Wives Club, working to support Family Relief. She directed the Red Cross swimming program at the base, and provided lifeguard training for all the pools. She has also been a Red Cross blood donor for 20 years. When she moved to the Jacksonville area Carolyn became politically active, supporting the candidates she believed would make the greatest positive difference to her community, and was especially active with the Clay Commissioners. Carolyn was appointed by Governor Bob Graham to the Northeast Florida Regional Planning Council, where she served for many years overseeing the planning and development of Flemming Island and other area advancements. Carolyn was a 25-year member of the Orange Park Womens Club where she also served as president, selecting Pediatric Hospice as her presidents project. She has been a long-time member of the GFWC (General Federation of Womens Club), and the FFWC (Florida Federation of Womens Club), where she assisted the president on her project, as well as a founding member of her local CCWE (Clay Women for Education) chapter. She was also an active supporter of the Clay Special Olympics and the St. Johns River Clean-up-Keep America Beautiful, as well as a regular contributor to Quigley House. Carolyn was deeply invested in promoting education. She was a founding member of the Friends of the Middleburg Library and served as its president, working to get that library established in her community. She was a member of HCE ( and Community Educators) and served as a mentor at the Middleburg High School. She also deeply loved animals. Her own pets were rescues, and she regularly contributed to Clay s Safe Animal Shelter and to Black Creek Animal Hospitals animal rescue projects. Most recently, she served through the Guardian Angels for Soldiers Pets program as a foster mom for two dogs of a soldier who returned just this month from the Middle East. But of all Carolyns contributions, perhaps her greatest stemmed from her genuine love and concern for everyone around her. Her ministry was to issue hug coupons, and hugs, to so many of the people she met. Recipients would often respond with, How did you know I needed this today? Most of the people who came in contact with Carolyn left her presence smiling and enriched by the encounter. Her mission was to leave the people around her happier than she found them and the world around her a better place. |
