Obituary: LAPAZ, George 89, of Tampa, passed away on Nov. 18 following a valiant battle against pneumonia. George was born in Havana Cuba on 26, 1924, a middle child among five sisters. He started his career in the casinos in the 1940s as a table runner and worked his way up to management at the Havana Hilton.He married the love of his life, Irene McGovern in 1954 and they had two daughters in Cuba and a son in Tampa. He worked for the City of Tampa for twenty years, retiring in his mid 50s. He moved to Deerfield Beach in 2008 and volunteered at Focal Point teaching Tai-Chi to the seniors. He was a neighborhood icon, always noticed donning a floppy hat or a beanie out walking the dogs.He is survived by three sisters, Marina, Merida, and Marcela; three children, Mayra (John), Marlen (Brian), and George Jr.; plus five grandchildren, Ryan, Lindsey, Lauren, Erica, and Alexi. Tio George was adored, respected, and loved by his many nieces and nephews. He was everyone’s Abuelo. He was the strongest, coolest, most loving, caring, generous person. He touched everyone he met with his gentle grace. We love you and miss you and you will forever be in our hearts. will be held at Garden of Memories, 21: Immediate family at 5:00PM and all others at 6:00PM followed by interment , 22 at 3:00PM.
