Obituary: Audrey Cecelia Lucas was born in Mount Jackson, Virginia, on 24, 1928. She was the oldest child and only daughter of the late Thomas Franklin Mayberry and the late Mary Green Mayberry. Audrey initially attended school in Mount Jackson, and continued her education in Harpers Ferry, West Virginia. She graduated from Washington, DCs Dunbar High School in 1946. Audrey became a music major at Howard University after high school, but decided to pursue a business career. She left Howard to attend the Cortez Peters Business School -- the first vocational school in the Nations Capital to prepare African Americans for business and civil service. In 1946, Audrey formally met her future husband, the late James Russell Lucas, in front of a mutual friends house. Rusty, as she called him, had actually been admiring her from afar for some time. I wanted to marry her the first time I saw her, he once told his daughter. Audrey and Rusty were married for 55 years, and had three children: Sharon, Russelle and Audie. Audrey began a long career at the Chesapeake and Potomac (C&P) Telephone in the early 1950s. Near the beginning of her career, she and a co-worker, Merdis Cunningham, were re-assigned from the all black office on U Street, to accounting positions at C&Ps downtown office. The transfer resulted in Audrey and Merdis becoming the first African-Americans to integrate the office. Jet Magazine noted the historic moment in its 25, 1954 issue. (available online). Audrey continued her career with C&P for over 40 years. Audrey and her mother, Mrs. Mary Mayberry, join the Turner Memorial AME Church family in the late 1940s. Both were devoted members for the rest of their lives. Whether trekking across the United States by train to Las Vegas with her favorite club – Club 367, riding a Winnebago to Mexico, California or Florida with close family and good friends, or cruising to the Caribbean with her daughter and granddaughters, Audrey loved to travel. She also enjoyed dancing, music and socializing with family, neighbors and other good friends. Most of all, she loved her dogs. She was never without a canine companion if she could help it. There were Candy and Kiltie, Kaiser and Sigmund, Moose and Joy. And, of course, there were Luke and Lucas. All were devoted to her, and it was mutual! Audrey was also fond of babies. All babies were cute and sweet, and she loved them all. Audrey was called to rest on 14, 2016. Left to cherish her memory is her devoted daughter, Sharon Lucas; her loving son, Russelle Lucas; her special sister, Ruby Scott; her three granddaughters, Erica Lucas, Teena Lucas Harrison (Brandon) and Domanique Lucas; and two great-grandchildren. She will also be dearly missed by her brother-in-law, C. Payne Lucas, and sisters-in-law Dorothy Whitley and a Jones, as well as Thelma Hardy, Katherine Lucas Freddie Lucas, Lloyd Eason, and many nieces, nephews, cousins and countless other relatives and friends.
