Obituary: Robert Matthew Lechkun, 61, of Ellington, beloved husband of 29 years to Sandra (Digertt) Lechkun, passed away at the home he built on 26, 2017, while surrounded by his family and loyal canine companion, Duncan. Diagnosed with Pancreatic Cancer in 2016, he fought the beast until the bitter end. Bob was born on 4, 1955 to the late Michael and Helen (Pelt) Lechkun, in Mt. Clemens, Michigan. He was recruited as an engineer to United Technologies in CT in 1983 where he remained committed, clearly as a “lifer” dedicated to his UTC family where work was more than a job, it was who he was. Bob’s engineering mentality transcended everything he approached as he was highly analytical, incredibly intelligent, thrived on analyzing complex problems and had to figure out how everything and anything worked. He was also the epitome of an athlete, mastering every sport that caught his interest. Bob was an avid golfer with his best friend Kevin Samble. He also enjoyed bowling, softball, basketball, triathlons, swimming, cycling, snowmobiling and anything that challenged his physical and mental endurance. Even during frequent hospitalizations, Bob pushed the limits and the rules by venturing off the nursing units or into the stairwells to get some exercise in. Dust did not gather on his heels, always working on his properties, from yard work to cutting trees and teaching himself guitar. Bob loved his John Deere backhoe and his Camaro and both brought him a sense of freedom, joy and satisfaction. He is survived by his wife Sandy; daughter Briana and her (Bob approved) boyfriend, Andrew Kozikowski; his son Matthew; Mother in Law Lucille Digertt, brother in law John Digertt and his wife Holly, sister in law Sharon Garrard, all of CT, along with his beloved Michigan family including brothers Michael Lechkun and his wife Nancy, Gregory Lechkun and his wife Christine, Lawrence Lechkun and his wife Teresa, his sisters Mary Lechkun, and Eileen Adams and her husband Butch. Bob also leaves 16 nieces and nephews and a grandnephew. Sandy, Briana, Andrew and Matthew will be traveling to Michigan in to bring some of Bob’s ashes to the resting place of his parents as well as one of his favorite places on Lake Heron. Details of arrangements will be forthcoming so that those wishing to see the family may do so. Bob’s family will receive friends to honor him on , 8, 2017 on at Ladd-Turkington & Carmon , 551 Talcottville Road, (Route 83) Vernon from 9-12. In lieu of flowers, donations in Bob’s memory may be made to Ron Foley Foundation, fighting Pancreatic Cancer (http://www.ronsrun.org/),; 1000 Farmington Avenue, Suite 108A West Hartford, CT 06107. Also, consider being involved in a PurpleStride, Wage Hope event to walk for pancreatic cancer. Find a PurpleStride near you at https://www.pancan.org.
