Obituary: James ( Jim ) Lacefield was born in Joplin, Missouri on 15, 1923, the first of two children to Esther and Oakie Lacefield. Jim and his family moved to Denver when he was six years old and he graduated from South High School in 1942. He enlisted in the US Marine Corps and was trained in aerial gunnery and ordinance. He flew as the back seat gunner in torpedo fighter planes. He spent 19 months on active duty moving from island to island in the Marianas Islands in the Pacific Theatre of World War II. the war ended, he came back to Denver where he met Flossie Meininger through a mutual friend. It was love at first sight and they were married on May 5, 1946. She was responsible for a lot of Jims success, providing a positive and loving support system for him the rest of his life. Their son James Howard Lacefield was born on 19,1949. Jim joined the Denver Fire Department in 1952. He was also involved in the air wing of the Marine Corps Reserve where he was one of the first men to achieve the rank of E-9, Master Gunnery Sergeant in the enlisted ranks of the Marine Corps. He spent 31 years running the flight line at Buckley Field in Aurora before retiring from the reserve in 1978. Jim also worked part time on his days off from the Denver Fire Department with the Mail Delivery Service that picked up and delivered mail and small packages to commercial businesses in the Denver Metro area. Jim retired from the Denver Fire Department in 1987, after 35 years of service. In recognition of his commitment to the Department and the community, in 1999 the Denver Fire Department created the Jim Lacefield Humanitarian Award. It is one of only two service ribbons named after a member of the department in the 149-year history of the Denver Fire Department. It recognizes an ongoing commitment towards improving the department and the community through volunteering and has only been given out nine times since 1999. Jim loved team sports and played baseball, fast pitch softball, and basketball during his working years. During his softball career, he participated in two world tournaments. In one regional tournament, Jim caught seven games in one day to help his team win the tournament and qualify to go to the world tournament in Clearwater, Florida in 1955. Jim coached boys baseball from 1958 - 1967 and lead one of his 13-14 year old teams to a world series tournament in Ralston, Nebraska in 1966. He was the treasurer for the PONY League and the American Amateur Baseball Congress for 12 years and he was a regional director for 26 years.
