Obituary: William D. Lewis passed away peacefully at home at the age of 74. He was devoted to his family, cared deeply for his community, and was proud to be a Vietnam Veteran and awarded the Purple Heart for his distinguished service. William grew up in Niles, Calif., and earned a bachelor's in Industrial Design from San Jose State University after his service in the army. He retired after working for 43 years in Silicon Valley, and continued teaching and researching STEM fields of study. He is survived by his beloved wife of 49 years, Veronica G. Lewis; children Dean, Jonathan, Cindy, and Kevin; and grandchildren Austin, Jaren, Asher, and Emmet Lewis. As well as siblings Robert Lewis, Reg Lewis, Jeanette Rebello, Jeannine Abbott, and Franklin Lewis. Preceded in death by his parents Agnes Alameda Lewis and Frank Lewis, sister, Jackie Lewis, and brother, Brian Lewis. William will be deeply missed by everyone who knew him. Visitation will be held on , 1, 2017 from 5-8 pm with Rosary at 6 pm at Lima Family Santa Clara Mortuary, 466 N. Winchester Blvd., Santa Clara, where the Service will also be held on , 2, 2017 at 11 am. Interment to follow at Gate of Heaven . |

Obituary: William James Lewis, 92, died 15, 2016, in the comfort of his own home. Born in Los Angeles, he joined the Marines at the beginning of WWII. With the 2nd Marine Division, he landed on Tinian, Tarawa, Saipan. the war he moved with his wife, Virginia, and young son to Alaska where he lived for 17 years. In 1967 he moved to Monterey with his future wife, Dockie, and called it home for the rest of his life. He was a voracious reader and loved the arts, especially literature, poetry, music and painting. Bill was a true naturalist and "lived off the grid" before we knew the term. His lucky children and grandsons accompanied him on many adventures. In his golden years he walked the Pacific Crest Trail, bicycled from coast to coast twice, climbed Mt. Whitney 7 times because it was "easy." He worked for the State Park system in Big Sur and Anza Borrego. For 30 years his home base was his boat, moored out in Monterey harbor. He reluctantly moved back to land at age 89. Mr. Lewis is survived by his sister, Louise Jones of Oakhurst, daughter Emily of Hayward, son Robert (Cathy) of Monterey, grandsons Justin (Keri) of Providence, RI, Jesse (Lara) of Exeter, Skyler of Monterey, and their mothers, Marty Lewis and Sophie Lewis both of Monterey, as well as great grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his last wife Susan Dockie Lewis of Monterey, his drinking buddy, Will Smith of Seattle, and his long time companion Felix. Mr. Lewis lived life on his own terms: to survive, to endure, to remain true to yourself. He was humble, unassuming and curious. He was the most loyal friend. He loved people and seemed to have limitless acceptance for each and every one. This we will remember. There will be a graveside ceremony with full military honors on 21 at noon at Mission Memorial Park in Seaside. |
