Obituary: Kathryn Genevieve Lentz was born Kathryn Genevieve Webb in the small town of Miller Missouri, 30 miles west of Springfield, on 21, 1919. She was the third of four children born to John W. Webb and his wife Rozzie Webb. She passed away May 22 2017. She grew up with two older brothers and a younger sister on a farm where they raised crops, cattle and milk cows. For unknown reasons her mother liked French sounding names, thought they were unusual and pretty. Kathryn was not a name she liked so she became Genevieve Webb growing up. Her sister was Helen Marie, and brothers Fontaine and Clifton Levinn Webb. Once in her childhood it snowed a blizzard in south Missouri, so high it covered the doors to their farm house and barn. The men had to use axes and shovels to clear the snow and to get the horses out of the barn. As a child Genevieve had a favorite cat named Blackus because it was pitch black. She and her sister would dress the cat in doll clothes and put it in a baby buggy and push it around the yard. Once when Blackus was asleep, Genevieve decided to wake him up by pinching his tail. He let out a caterwaul and shot out of the buggy, never to be their baby again. Genevieve also did something few children ever had the chance to do. Towns and counties had summer picnics which often included rides such as ponies or other animals. When she was about 8 or 9 years old in the 1920s something new and exciting came to the picnic. An airplane, the first one she had ever seen, with a pilot who was called a barn stormer because they went from rural town to town offering rides. Genevieve was with a playmate girl in Miller when the plane landed in a field. Everyone ran toward it. The pilot asked Genevieve and her friend if they wanted a ride? didn have any money but the girl friends father paid 50 cents each for the girls to ride together in the open cockpit Curtiss Jenny bi- plane. She said it was very exciting with the wind in their hair. When she told her father at the dinner table that night, she said he turned white and said she could have been killed.never do that again. Genevieve graduated from Miller High School in 1935 and went on to Southwest Missouri State in Springfield to further her education, the first in her family to go to college. She graduated with an Associate Arts Degree two years later and began working at the Agriculture Extension office in Mt. Vernon, Missouri. That is where she met Thomas Roy Lentz, a traveling county agent who helped and taught farmers new crop techniques. Lentz, known as Roy Lentz fell in love with Genevieve and they were married in 1939. Because he traveled, they moved to many towns in South Missouri during the first few years of their marriage. In 1943 during World War II, Roy Lentz enlisted in the Navy and because he was a University of Missouri graduate, he qualified for officer training. Roy became one of many 90-day wonders as they were known for the three months training they received before becoming Ensigns. his training, Roy Lentz received a one week furlough to see his parents and relatives before being sent to San Francisco, California on a train where the new officers were to be shipped to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Luckily, they were given additional training in San Francisco so they were stationed there several weeks. Genevieve and another officers wife from Missouri drove a Model-A Ford from Missouri to San Francisco to see their husbands before they shipped out and then drove it back to Miller, Missouri, a round trip of about 3,000 miles. Genevieve said they didn have many maps, they just stopped for gas and asked which highway to take. World War II ended, Roy and Genevieve moved to Springfield Missouri where he worked for the Veterans Administration and she got a job at the Department of Motor Vehicles. In 1949, their son Steve was born. Genevieve stopped working to care for Steve until he was in third grade, then she returned to her job at the DMV. In 1960, the family moved to Raytown after Roy Lentz was transferred to Kansas Citys Veterans Administration. Genevieve joined the Blue Ridge Presbyterian Church in Raytown in 1960 and has been a very active member of the church for 57 years. She helped raise money to support missionary work and orphans in foreign countries which was a mission of the church. She also became a deacon of the church and took an active role in helping other members which she referred to as her flock. In the 1960s Genevieve began working at the Kansas City IRS , processing tax returns for half a year each year until 1980 when she retired. She and Roy liked to travel after he retired from the Army Corps of Engineers in Kansas City. spent time with friends on trips to Europe including Britain, France, Germany, Spain and Portugal. also attended the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, Korea. Roy Lentz preceded Genevieve in death in 2000. Genevieve had a great love of animals. She had a pet cat Ceta for 18 years and donated each year to the Wayside Waifs animal shelter in Kansas City. The family would ask that any donations be made in her name to the Wayside Waifs shelter. Genevieve is survived by her son Steve of Pasadena, California; grandson Craig, his wife Ebbie of Raytown; and two great grandchildren, Noah, 12, and Eden, 2.
