Obituary: The heart of our family left us , 21, 2015. Our Mother, Wife, Grandmother, and Big Sister Suzanne passed quietly and peacefully with family at her bedside. At home she wasn Suzanne - she was Mom, Susie, Grandma, or Suze. But most of all, she was loved, and she loved all of us in return. Suzanne was born on 26, 1938 to Bill and Jane Theis in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. She was their first child. She grew from a beautiful and happy baby girl to a stunning and brilliant young woman. She also looked out for and loved her younger brother John and her baby sister Jane. As a teenager, Suzanne encountered her first of many serious health challenges. She was stricken with Polio. She missed an entire year of school. But Suzannes battle with Polio could not keep her from the life and lives she would soon touch. She kept up with her schoolwork thanks to the help of a tutor and the academic talents of her parents. She moved on to the next grade and headed back to school to pursue her studies and a life of promise. Suzanne earned three important things in her senior year at Blair High School: her diploma, her admission to the University of Maryland, and the love of a man named Jim. Tall, skinny, and handsome, Jim Limric was two classes ahead of Suzanne at Blair and had already graduated and joined the Navy. But home from sea to spend time with family and friends, Jim found something that would anchor his heart, no matter where his journeys took him. Mutual friends helped hook the young couple up for a hayride double-date and Jim says he was in love at first sight. He couldn stop thinking about her. When Jim and Suzanne celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2010, their oldest daughter Jennie said o wonder he loved her. She was beautiful. Suzanne and Jim got married on 12, 1960 and moved into an apartment in Bethesda, Maryland. A year later, they moved into their first house and welcomed their first child - a son, Jimi. In 1963, they had their first daughter, Jennie. Suzanne was now Mom, and she worked part-time while taking care of their young children. As Dad worked in his new career as an air-traffic controller, Mom balanced home life with professional life, carving out the beginnings of her own long career that would place her in leadership roles in the office and in the community. Growing up, Suzanne deeply-admired her mothers brilliance and academic abilities, and knew her mother had sacrificed a career of her own to raise children during a time when roles were extremely limited for women. She took that sacrifice to heart. While Suzanne was at the University of Maryland, she, and all of the other female students on campus were subject to curfew times that didn apply to Marylands male students. Years later, Suzannes children found an old, but very pointed letter she had written to the schools administration regarding the policy. That letter might have ended up in a shoebox, but no one was going to put a lid or ceiling on Suzannes career path. Mom and Dad struggled through some very difficult pregnancies in the 1960s. But with love and the two constant reminders (Jimi and Jennie) of what that love can bring, Mom had a third child, Mychal, in 1969. By then, the family had moved to Honolulu, Hawaii to provide new work opportunities for Dad, and new adventures for the growing family. The family of five returned to the East Coast in 1970, and soon it was a family of six. Katye was born in 1971 as Dad and Mom began a new chapter of their life in the rolling countryside of Leesburg, Virginia. There were regular vacations at the beach in Avalon, New Jersey and Bethany Beach, Delaware, and a new focus on Moms career as a public health nurse. The family spent nine years living in Northern Virginia, and then decided to go on another adventure out West. Again, Dads air traffic control career landed the family on the other side of the United States. Dad, Mom, and the kids found a new house in Auburn, Washington and Dad began working at the nearby air traffic controller center. Mom began working at the public health department in Auburn, and her talents were quickly noticed. Mom would eventually take on the role of supervisor. She also grew tremendous roots in the community, chairing and serving on committees dealing with everything from converting Auburns schools to a new middle school system, to making sure teenage mothers were respected and given full academic opportunities while they raise their children. Mom would serve as health department supervisor for more than a dozen years. As finances got tough in the 1980s and Dad changed careers, Mom took on the extra responsibility of guiding our family through tough economic times right down to making the tough decisions at the dinner table as she somehow managed to feed our large family on a small budget. The leadership skills she showed us everyday were also on display at work as she continued to earn the respect of her health department co-workers. When she retired, nurses past and present turned out to give thanks for a pioneer who had fulfilled the promise her mother was never allowed to seek. Mom was a woman of many talents. She loved to swim and play tennis. She was a remarkable painter whose art adorns several of her childrens walls. She loved flowers and had a great eye for gardening, even after she reached a physical point where she could no longer do the actual gardening. Mom sang in the church choir in both Leesburg and Auburn. And she could cook a meal that would make you stay at the table for a while. If Dad hadn have fallen continued... |
