Obituary: Mabel Helen Willson Lazara died unexpectedly of natural causes on 14, 2015 at her home in Olympia, WA. She was born in 1929, the only child of Charlotte and George Willson, at Camp Ellenson, a logging camp in the foothills of Mt Rainer where her father worked. Mabel graduated in 1947 from Enumclaw High School. She was predeceased by Henry Lowell Lazara, her loving husband of 57 years from whom she was widowed in 2008.

When Mabel was a little girl, before the days of television and Internet, she precisely copied the newspaper comics, drew elaborate pictures, and roller skated for hours up and down the sidewalks near her house. She swung as high as possible in the big wooden swing her father built for her in their apple tree. She listened intently to her mothers stories, rubbed elbows with articulate aunts and uncles, and spoke like an adult by the time she started grade school. On weekends, Mabel took great pleasure in watching her father play piano and harmonica by ear. She could see how music brought out the gentle side of her tough saw-filing father and she could feel a personal connection with the music when she sang along.

Mabels interest in music grew, and soon she was taking piano lessons and performing for her parents and at recitals. At the age of eleven, her schools orchestra had lost a standup bass player. Mabel was approached by her school orchestra leader who knew of her musical talent, and was asked to become the new standup bass player for her school. The bass was heavy and huge, but that did not stop eleven-year-old Mabel from taking on the task. Years later, she proudly recalled sometimes playing until her fingers bled and there were tears streaming down her face. She poured tremendous passion into her music. In her senior year of high school, Mabel wrote the lyrics to her class song and also performed as a solo vocalist. Mabel became a very accomplished bass player eventually playing with the Enumclaw High School Jazz Band, the Seattle Youth Symphony, the Spokane Philharmonic and the Olympia Symphony Orchestra.

On the day of her high school graduation, Mabel became engaged to Henry Lowell Lazara, a young WWII veteran. H. Lowell had graduated early from Renton High School and had joined the Navy at the age of seventeen. Mabel and H. Lowell met at a music camp where he volunteered after his military service. H. Lowell fell for Mabel almost instantly. During their four year engagement, Mabel attended business school and then went to work while living at a boarding house. In 1951, Mabel Helen Willson and Henry Lowell Lazara were married in Enumclaw, WA in the presence of 350 guests. H. Lowell completed Gonzaga University, he and Mabel started their family of four children and Mabel became a stay-at-home-mom while their children were young. Having been an only child, Mabel was both thrilled and challenged to raise four children.

Mabel became the kind of mother who lets the kids do nearly anything, as long as it is safe. She had no restrictions on play messes, artistic endeavors, or cooking projects. Surprisingly, childrens tea parties with her best china never cost her a cup. She let her kids build huge pillow forts and toy structures in the living room, mud pies and dirt mountains in the field, and artwork anywhere! There were always art supplies available, from pencils to paint to clay, and her children had full access to the kitchen. She encouraged her kids to explore the world around them and to develop imagination. Being an only child, she knew how beautiful, unlimited and expansive imagination could be. She was a natural talent with drawing and painting. She could draw incredible caricatures seemingly effortlessly.

Mabel loved animals. Over the course of her life, she had a pet chicken, cats, dogs, birds, fish, turtles, and guinea pigs. For a short time, she worked in a pet and feed store where she learned a lot about animal care and experienced an unsavory side of the pet industry. She rescued and found homes for several animals that were dumped in her neighborhood in the 1960s and 1970s, before animal rescue became popular. She went to great efforts to care for animals with special needs giving them the best possible quality of life, even if that meant taking hours out of each of her days. She shared her love for animals with everyone who knew her.

Mabel had a scholarly interest in religious, spiritual, and cultural subjects on which she thrived through constant studying and learning. She approached her quests for knowledge with a sense of personal duty to view differing perspectives and a longing to discover and expose important facts along the way. She was always interested in equality of people, regardless of gender, race or religion. She was an early member of the National Organization for Woman when the Equal Rights Amendment was being hotly debated in the U.S. Later in life she became a vocal advocate for sexual orientation equality.

Mabel is survived by her four children and their spouses; George Lazara, Ronald Lazara, Ronalds wife Debra, Anne La Zara, Helen Lazara and Helens husband John Lysak. Her surviving grandchildren and their spouses are Adam Lazara, Adams wife , Nicole Lazara, Nicoles significant-other Ryan Ludahl, Jennifer Lazara, Jennifers husband Wes Briscoe, Lisa Stuurmans and Lisas husband Derek. Her surviving great-grandchildren are Corinne Lazara, Justin Lazara, Braxton Ludahl and Corbin Stuurmans. Her step-great-granddaughter is Nicole Krebser.

Mabel is also survived by her dearly loved fulltime companion Bentley, her cat. Mabels charity of choice was Feline Friends. If interested, memorial donations in Mabel Lazaras honor may be mailed to Feline Friends at 2202 Cumberland Ave. SW, Olympia, WA 98512.

A memorial service will be held on , 9th at 12:00 noon at Mills and Mills , 5725 continued...
