Obituary: Lorraine Larson was a devoted wife and mother, passionate world traveler, and a familiar figure to many students who passed through the principals office at Lake Stevens High School in the 1960s and early 1970s. Lorraine, who was 92, died 12 after a short illness. Born in Everett, Washington on 9, 1924, Lorraine was the only child of Bud and Selma Laviguer. She was raised in Everett. Long before it became todays norm for many women, Lorraine accepted the challenge of juggling domestic life and career. She took business courses in high school, undeterred by a counselors accusation that she was only interested in marrying a boss. By the time she graduated from Everett High School in 1942, she already had a job as office manager at the Everett Theater. She met Sig Larson, an Army Air Corps veteran home on leave, on a blind date, and the two were married in 1947. A couple years later, they moved to Lake Stevens. Lorraine took time off to focus on her new family, but she soon returned to work as an elementary school secretary and later, office secretary at Lake Stevens High School. Lorraine eventually moved to the Lake Stevens schools administration office, where she served as district finance director until her retirement. While their boys were growing up, Lorraine and Sig enjoyed typical summer vacation trips to Disneyland, Oregon and the Skagit River. Beginning in 1979, Lorraine and Sig launched their world-travel phase by purchasing a pair of open-destination airline tickets to the Caribbean. Inspired by the Rick Steves independent travel philosophy, they took driving trips across France and Portugal, and visited other countries in Europe, Asia, Africa and Australia. Lorraines favorite destination was Italy, which she revisited with her two young granddaughters, Jayme and Jenna, a few months after Sigs death in 2002. At age 85, Lorraines last trip abroad was a Rick Steves tour to Eastern Europe. Lorraine was passionate about cooking, and holiday gatherings at Lake Stevens were eagerly anticipated. She was active in the Lake Stevens Historical Society and relished live theater and Everett Civic Music performances. She also was an avid reader. In 2007, Lorraine moved to the Washington Oakes retirement community in Everett, where she lived for several years and developed many friendships. A few months before her death, she moved to the Village Green retirement community in Federal Way. Lorraine is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gary Larson and Barbara Klein, Federal Way; son David Larson, Everett; granddaughter Jayme Larson, University Place; granddaughter Jenna Larson, Normandy Park; great-granddaughter Arianna Larson, Normandy Park. Public visitation at Bauer , Snohomish, on 25 from 2-6 p.m. Interment at GAR , Snohomish, will follow a private graveside service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Planned Parenthood or other organizations supporting the needs of women and children. |
