Obituary: Ferril was born 5, 1928 in Lehi, Utah. When he was two years old his mother passed away. His father was a school teacher in Price, Utah at the time and then took over the family farm so he could raise his two little boys and care for his mother. He taught his boys how to work hard and how to be a good person. Ferril learned to feed the animals, drive the cows to the pasture and help harvest the crops. He was a paper boy and trapped muskrats to earn a little money. In high school he played trumpet in the school band and orchestra and later played in dance bands and for weddings. During the Second World War he worked at a steel plant with the open hearth furnace repair crew and as a masons helper. During his school days his main interest was in science. Ferril received good grades and a scholarship to BYU . He served a mission for the LDS church in the southern half of California, Arizona and some of Nevada. For fifteen months of his mission Ferril and his companions traveled without purse or scrip. If the missionaries weren invited to eat or sleep with the people they were teaching, they would sleep under a bridge and sometimes eat wild watercress for lunch. He lost twenty pounds on his mission and the rules were changed the next year. He returned to BYU for one more year and transferred to the University of Utah because at that time BYU didn offer Electrical Engineering. He helped to run a student/faculty lounge where they electrocuted hot dogs (the best ever tasted) with their electrical gizmos. When he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree he received the Institute of Radio Engineering award of being the outstanding engineering graduate in the electrical engineering department. Ferril chose to work for Hughes Aircraft Co. in Los Angeles to work part time and continue his masters and doctorate degrees. It was in church that he met his wife. Dona was engaged to another man but felt inspired to break up go out on a first date with Ferril. Six weeks later they were married in the Manti Temple. At Hughes Aircraft Co. he worked as a communications design and development engineer and designed and tested new forms of long-range communications for the United States Air Force. He received a job offer from Aeronutronics in Newport Beach to be a group head, taking responsibility for systems studies and gaining new business. These included satellite and space systems, lunar landing systems, missile defense systems, electronic warfare systems and others. While at Hughes he served as second counselor in the Westchester 2nd Ward bishopric and in Newport Beach he was called to be the first Bishop of the Newport Beach ward. visiting BYU he received a call from the Dean to be chairman of the Electrical Engineering department, which he held for sixteen years and then taught for another two years. He took early etirement and worked at SRS Technologies in California and did research in radar and special X-ray systems and then at EG&G Special Projects in Las Vegas on instrumentation radar and RF equipment. He wrote a book on electrical engineering which involved 480 computer illustrations. In 1997 he had a stroke which paralyzed him on his left side and from that time on he has researched and submitted thousands of names to the Temple with only one hand. He worked for over seventeen years in the Provo temple and loved doing it. With Dona he has traveled all over the world. Israel was his favorite place. Raising nine children has been a great experience and now with 32 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren his kingdom is growing. Services will be held 3, 2012 at 11am at the Edgemont 5th Ward, 350 E 2950 N, Provo 84604. Friends may visit with the family on 2, 2012 from 6-8pm at the church, as well as Arpil 3, 2012 from 9:30-10:30am at the church, prior to the service. Interment will take place at East Lawn. |
