Obituary: Francis Marcelyn (Marce) Lucke died in her home 8, 2016. She was 87 years old. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years in 2006. She is survived by three children: Joseph Lucke of Buffalo, NY; James Lucke of Lappeenranta, Finland; and Robin Grunzweig of Mission Viejo, CA. Her descendants include four grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. She was a woman of high intelligence and razor wit. In high school she was a top student and won several academic honors in science. But despite her talent and achievements, she was denied, as were many women of her generation, the opportunities for an advanced education or a professional career. Instead, she committed herself to raising her three children and to civic duties. She was a member of numerous civic organizations, including the Pilot Club, Victoria Educational Gardens (for which she wrote a newspaper column), The League of Women Voters, and the Victoria Library. She also attended courses at Victoria for such diverse interests as meteorology and beginning Russian. She worked for McCabe-Carruth and Chesnicks Furniture. She was socially and scientifically astute. She did not suffer fools gladly and we were not exempt. She was an early champion of civil rights, womens equality, resource conservation, and scientific literacy. She taught us that even though life may not be fair to anyone, we should be fair to everyone. She supported our Dads music career ("Mr. Joe") and took care of him during his long illness. suffering a mild stroke in 2009, she withdrew from most social activities, but continued to enjoy a quiet life of reading and reminiscing with close friends. Donations can be made in Marce's name to the Victoria Master Gardener's Association or the Victoria Public Library. The following she wrote for USA Today on Valentines Day, 2007. Cat in the hat: "My husband died in , 2006. We would have been married 60 years in , 2007. I learned early in our marriage that I had truly chosen the right man. This is the story. "I loved to play with the landlady's cat and one day she said a neighbor would give me a kitten. I told her that since we had to move a lot with my husband's job, I didn't think I could take the kitten. She said she would take the cat when we had to move. I told my husband, of about eight months what she said, but he had never had a cat and was not too enthusiastic, but agreed to go to the neighbor's and see the kittens. We visited the cats and I played with them until one kitten crawled in my lap and went to sleep. My husband then decided that the kitten could come live with us. While we were walking home, the kitten still asleep, my husband took off his hat - and you don't mess with a Texan's hat - put his pocket handkerchief inside and placed the kitten in the hat. ."
