Obituary: Leon Jacques Lidji passed away peacefully on 29, 2014. Jacques was born in 1924 in Cairo, Egypt, into what was then a thriving Jewish community. His family owned a large department store in Cairo known as Maison Gattegno. The family remained safely in Cairo during WWII, but not Jacques. Instead, during the war, at 18, Jacques made passage to New York to enlist in the US Army where, after basic training, he was transferred to the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) to work in intelligence because of his ear for language. He spoke English, French, German, Italian, Spanish, Greek, Turkish and Ladino and he could get by in number of other languages. As a member of the OSS, he followed US troops across Europe gathering intelligence and interrogating civilians and POWS. He was in the first wave of intelligence officers to enter Dachau after its liberation, collecting information in interviews which were used in the OSS 7th Army Report on Dachau. The experience left a permanent wound on his tender heart. He never discussed the experience with anyone until, reluctantly, some 65 years after the war. WWII, the rest of his family was forced to leave Cairo when, in response to the Israeli War of Independence, the Egyptian government nationalized all Jewish businesses, including Maison Gattegno. Jacques and his brothers Albert and Henri, and his sisters Sarah and Laura, ended up in Dallas where they started a new life. His much loved brothers and sisters all passed on before him, and he missed them every day. He could hardly speak of them without his eyes filling with tears. In the 1950s, soon after coming to Dallas, he had a local television French cooking show. His love of cooking lead to a career in restaurant and hotel management. Jacques never had children because he was over 60 by the time he met the love of his life, Myriam Betty Alonso Schouten Lidji, his wife of nearly 30 years. But he treated all his nephews and nieces, and later, his grand-nieces and grand-nephews, as his adopted children. Always sneaking them treats and gifts, and taking them out on food missions to find the best baklava, or calf brains, or dover sole, or gyros, or dim sum, or some other foreign food that was, according to him, the very best. And no matter how hidden and far away some of those restaurants were, he was always greeted upon arrival like an old friend by the owners, who he then engaged in animated conversation in their native language, whether it was Cantonese, Korean, Japanese, Vietnamese, Sudanese, or any one of a number of other languages he had mastered as a mimic, without saying a single word in any of them. And the restaurant owners would all play along and talk back to him in their language. This was all to the amazement of his younger, uninitiated, nieces and nephews who did not realize that he just having fun and could not speak a word of any of those languages. He never met a stranger and loved to make people laugh. And he was very, very good at that. His loving wife Betty laughed along with everyone else, shaking her head in disbelief of his antics, while muttering "Oh Jacques" in her distinctive Paraguayan accent. The two of them doted on each other to the last day of their wonderful life together. He is survived by many saddened friends who are all happy they knew him, and by a large and loving family including his wife Betty and their dogs, Coco and Sable, his sister-in-law and lifelong friend from Egypt, Nicole Lidji, and the following nephews and nieces: Randy Shafer, Steve Shafer, Scott Shafer, Alan Lidji, Brian Lidji, Craig Lidji, Andy Mires, Mona Lidji Fishman, Scott Lidji, Paul Lidji, Micaela Gutierrez Alonso and all of their children. A memorial service celebrating his life will be held at 3:00 pm. on , 2, 2014 at Temple Emanu-El, Dallas, Texas. |

Obituary: Lidji, Albert Albert was born on 14, 1921, in Cairo, Egypt. He died in Dallas on 16th at 89 from complications after a recent stroke. His family in Egypt was part of the large Sephardic Jewish community there and it owned the luxury emporium Maison Gattegno named for his mothers family. Housed in the former Au Printemps department store, it sold furniture and gifts. At 19, Albert added ladies ready-to-wear, taking frequent buying trips to Paris, foreshadowing his career later in life. Almost 800,000 Egyptian Jews survived World War II, but after the Israeli War of Independence in 1948, Egypt nationalized all Jewish property, including Maison Gattegno. Albert and his first wife, Nicole Cohenca Lidji, became refugees and fate brought them to Dallas in 1951 where they settled and raised their family. In Dallas, he transformed Lou Lattimore, a sleepy suburban dress shop on Lovers Lane, into an iconic Dallas specialty store with an international reputation. Albert was the perfect gentleman -- elegant and affable -- and the roster of designers he showcased at Lou Lattimore reads like a Whos Who in the history of late 20th Century fashion: Norman Norell; Halston; Giorgio Armani; Roberto Capucci; and Christian Dior. Many, like Stephen Sprouse and Carolina Herrera, got their very first orders from the store. In 1981 Albert married Martha Gaylord, then an actress in New York and Yale Drama School graduate. He is survived by Martha, his loving wife of 30 years; his three sons and their spouses, Alan Lidji and Shari, Brian Lidji and Fay, and Craig Lidji and Delise; the mother of his sons, Nicole Lidji; his six grandchildren - Eric, Sophie and Sadie Lidji; Barrett, Caroline and Nick Lidji; his brother Jacques Lidji and wife Betty; and numerous loving nephews and nieces. A memorial service will be held at Temple Emanu-El, 8500 Hillcrest, on 20, at 3pm. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the charity of the donors choice in Alberts name. |
