Obituary: As it must to all men, death came to Gil Leight, devoted husband, and loving father and grandfather, in his 86th year, on , May 23, 2014. At home, surrounded by his family, Gedaliah ben Yosef passed from this world, peacefully, in his sleep. Born into a humble state on the eve of the Great Depression, by grace and diligence, Gil maintained that position throughout his life. He attended school in New York City where he taught briefly at several institutions of higher learning before making his home across the river in New Jersey. There he settled-in to raise his family in a small town called Verona while continuing to develop his career as a Speech Pathologist and Professor of Communication Sciences and Disorders at Montclair State (now Montclair State University). For the next 25 years, Gil devoted his professional time and attention to teaching his students how to care for those with profound communication problems often resulting from stroke or head injury. He was especially proud to have developed an innovative program to help nursing home residents maintain their cognitive and communication skills. In 1978, Gil met and later married Sharon - the love of his life. Some of their happiest moments were spent on the ballroom dance floor, as well as listening to favorite tunes, old and new. With a twinkle in his eye, Gil liked to say Give me a word and Ill give you a song. In 1988, Gil took early retirement from the college and happily assumed the role of railing spouse when Sharons employer, JCPenney, relocated its corporate headquarters from Manhattan to Plano, Texas. Trading in his snow shoes for a pair of cowboy boots, Dr. Leight never even glanced back. Gil is survived by his wife, Sharon, his children (and their spouses) Dana Leight (Michele) of Atlanta, GA; Adam Leight (Daniella) of Ocala, FL; and Michele Buckner of McKinney, TX , and his grandchildren Christopher, Katherine and Jonathan Buckner. He also leaves behind his closest friends whom he loved so much, Dr. Joseph Attanasio, his long-time colleague at Montclair State, and Joes wife, Marie, of Upper Montclair, New Jersey. The family would like to thank Dr. Sashi Reddy for his ongoing and sensitive commitment to Gils medical needs, and nurses Tonia Knight, Arial Savage and Channel from Heart to Heart Hospice for their loving care. A celebration of Gils life will be held on , 7th, at 2 p.m. at Ted Dickey West on George Bush Turnpike in Dallas. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Gils memory to Assistance League® of Greater Collin , 2011 W. Spring Creek Parkway, Plano, TX 75023, or to the charity of your choice. |
