Obituary: Ronald Edward Lees, 73, of Fordtran, died , 29, at DeTar Hospital following a long illness.
He was born in Ohio, but liked to remind his Texas friends he got to the Lone Star State as soon as he could following his birth Nov. 11, 1941. He may have been born in Salem, Ohio, but when he was a few months old his father was drafted, and the family moved to El Paso.
He was the son of Cyrill Lees and Minnie Kelm Lees.
World War II the family returned to Ohio. During his growing up years Ron was seldom idle. He came from a hardworking family. For years Rons dad worked full-time while operating and eventually owning a skating rink in Columbiana . Ron worked at the skating rink, too. And, in addition to that he delivered newspapers, mowed lawns, and worked at a bowling alley. He found time to enjoy the outdoors hunting and fishing with his dad, and as he got older ventured into the woods on his own.
Ron was a member of the David Anderson High School class of 1959. At his 50th class reunion he had difficulty identifying many of his classmates, but they knew him immediately. He was the boy whose family ran the skating rink where they enjoyed so many happy occasions, and he was the young man who could skate like a champion.
In 1959 Ron enlisted in the Navy. He said so many times that being in the Navy was one of the greatest experiences of his life. He enjoyed the adventure of being involved in Navy aviation and was to serve for 10 years. He was very fond of recalling his time at U.S. Naval Air Station in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. It was there he became the proud father of a baby boy. He also was to be on hand during the very anxious time of the Cuban Missile Crisis. Ron was charged with training other sailors how to use machine guns in the event of an attack.
being honorably discharged he settled in Texas and got a job at Gary Aircraft at Victoria Regional Airport. When the company moved its operations further north, Ron begin another adventure in his life working at Du Pont. He worked as a welder for many years, but a growing interest in computers led him to attend Victoria and eventually he moved to a desk job at the plant.
In addition to always holding down a full-time job Ron followed in his fathers footsteps and worked part-time jobs. He umpired Little League, junior high and high school baseball games. He worked at a Harley motorcycle dealership, and for 10 years worked at the Victoria Advocate as a weekend photographer. He also served as president of the old Victoria Gun Club.
He married Linda Harsdorff, on Jan. 9, 1979, at her fathers home in Woodsboro. The couple lived about 10 years in Victoria, and in 1990 built a home on their property in Fordtran. Upon retirement Ron stayed busy working on his place, and enjoying the companionship of friends. He also became known for his annual Fourth of fireworks event, which he planned to the very end of his life.
Visitation will be from noon until 2 p.m. , 7, 2015, followed by funeral services at Rosewood in Victoria. Pastor Mike Singenstreu will officiate. Full military honors by the Victoria Veterans Council will follow. Friends are asked to dress casual.
Ron is survived by his wife, Linda; a son, Ronald E. Lees Jr. (Lynn), of Sugar Land; a grandson, Carter John Lees of Sugar Land; a sister, Roxanne Hood of Lisbon, Ohio; two nephews and one niece.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, and his daughter, Christine Lees.
In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to a favorite charity, or to the Victoria Master Gardeners Scholarship Fund, Texas A&M AgriLife Extension-Victoria Office, 528 Waco Circle, Victoria, Texas, 77904.
