Obituary: Louise was born to F. L. Hall and Esther Simmons Hall on 20, 1939 in Canyon, Texas. She lived in the Texas Panhandle for her childhood. Her father was a nurseryman. She attended one school in Spring Lake and graduated from Spring Lake High School in 1957. In the summer before her senior year, she went to San Antonio to visit her sister, Rene and worked the counter at the laundry and dry cleaning establishment owned by her sister and brother-in-law. While there, she met a handsome young man named John Lasater, who worked as a drycleaner. Johnny was instantly struck by this beautiful young woman. He was overwhelmed, not only by her beauty, but also by her exquisite character. corresponded over the next year and he made a few trips to the panhandle to visit her and her family. The two were married on 4, 1957. resided in San Antonio for the next 30-plus years where they had five children and Johnny changed his career from dry-cleaning to commercial coffee service. Johnny and Louise made an adventurous trip in the summer of 1962. packed their three children into a 58 Volkswagen Beetle and pulled a tent trailer on a journey that ended up on the Umpqua River in Oregon where they spent the summer. Louise took it all in stride making blackberry pies in a Dutch oven and bathing children in the cold river. Johnny worked in a service station, picked pears in an orchard and added fresh-caught Rainbow Trout to the camp menu. This was a six-month trip as that included a visit to the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, and the Seattle Worlds Fair before returning to San Antonio to make it their home. In 1967, Johnny arranged to have his mother, Onie Belle Flynt Lasater, live in a house next to them. This became known as Grandmas House for years to come even after she passed away in of 1974. Grandma Onie passed along some of her wonderful cooking skills and recipes to Louise. She was a friend to the whole family and her memories live on to this day. The Lasaters had a very open house that included numerous Bible Studies, young people get-togethers, volleyball games, Aqua-Dorf games (ask Scott), singings and refugees from family problems, financial problems, fires, etc. In 1988, Johnny, Louise and the youngest son, Daniel moved to Mansfield, TX since Johnny had accepted a promotion to Division Manager for Farmer Brothers Coffee. Louise had a difficult time leaving behind the many friends that she had made in San Antonio, but soon began developing new friendships. Their new home began to take on the same welcome atmosphere as the house in San Antonio. All of the children continued to provide more grandchildren until the total now stands at 14. All of them found Grandmas house to be their favorite place to be. Louise was as good at being a Grandma as she was at being a Mom. She was, of course, much more tolerant of indiscretions on the part of grandchildren. She would take a dozen grandchildren to Six Flags and managed to get back home with all of them AND her sanity. Louise was a marvelous cook and the whole family enjoyed her chicken and rice, smothered steak, chicken and dumplings, wonderful salads, cheesecakes and numerous other dishes. She had a way of making leftovers seem like delicacies. She was the kind of person that anyone could talk to. She always listened with such interest no matter how trivial the matter. Little children knew they were loved. Old people knew that when she asked how they were doing, she really meant it. She offered sage advise and tender compassion. Many have expressed that they felt she was a second Mom to them. In the Spring of 2005, she was told that she had Ovarian cancer. The whole family was devastated. But Mom approached this with grace and dignity. She survived the surgery, took the chemo-therapy, endured the loss of her beautiful hair, suffered the accompanying sickness and was pronounced in remission in early 2006. She had a couple of good years although she continued to take milder chemo-therapy to kept the cancer on the run. We are thankful to Dr. Awashti of the Texas Cancer Treatment in Arlington for keeping her with us for four and a half years. Toward the end of 2008, she started a downturn. In early 2009, her abdomen started filling with fluid as a reaction to cancerous tumors. The fluid was drained and more chemo-therapy was tried to fight the cancer. Through all of this, Johnny stood by her side, holding her hand and getting her to every appointment. His love for her was demonstrated every day as he set aside his own comfort and sleep to care for her. She had some more good days including a trip to South Padre Island with much of the family. But the cancer continued to grow and reached a terminal point when the tumors crowded her digestive system to the point of shutting it down. She bravely underwent more surgery to allow more time. And spent her last few weeks in San Antonio, first at the North Central Baptist Hospital, then at the rent house next to Daniel and s, and finally at the Odyssey House Hospice facility where she passed from this life on 27, 2009. We miss Mom. We will always miss her. But we rejoice in the victory she has in Christ. Not only in the life that she chose to live in following Him. But the life that she now has through the sacrifice of Jesus on the cross of Calvary. We await the glorious resurrection of the saints and anticipate a reunion with her and with our Lord on that Great Day. Her spirit is in the loving care of our Father. We continued... |
