Surviving are her children, Sherry (Gary) Gregory of Washington, IL, James (Jacqueline) Sharpe of Pekin and Anthony (Denise) Sharpe of Columbia, Tennessee; 7 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 children, William Michael Sharpe, Thomas Ray Sharpe and Ewell Dean Sharpe; her sisters, Mary Johns and Reba Carlson; brothers, Ray and Roy Tice and her great granddaughter, Kaylee Nauman. Obituary: Retired Chaplain Major James N. Layne, 81, of Chattanooga passed away on , 20, 2011. He retired from the U.S. Army after 20 years, having served in World War II and as Chaplain in the Vietnam War. He received the Bronze Star Medal, Meritorious Service Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. retirement from the U.S. Army he taught at UTC and served as Chaplain of the Tennessee Highway Patrol, Tennessee Chapter of the FBI and Hamilton Sheriffs Department. He was an ordained minister in the Church of God. He was born in Cartwright, TN, son of the late Robert Ollie and Beatrice Cookston Layne. Obituary: Hillis Layne, 91, passed away at his daughters home on , 12, 2010. Born on 23, 1918 in Whitwell, Tennessee, he was a resident of Chattanooga for most of his life. He was a long-time member of the East Ridge Church of Christ, where he served as a deacon for many years. Mr. Layne enjoyed a 37 year career in professional baseball. He was signed by Joe Engel to play in the Washington Senators organization, and played for the Chattanooga Lookouts before being called up to the Washington Senators in the 1941 season. his major league career, he led the Pacific Coast league in batting in 1947. He played in nearly 2,000 professional games, with a lifetime batting average of .335. his playing days, he was a minor league manager, a minor league director for the Senators, and a baseball scout for the As, Mets, Senators, and Rangers. He was recognized by the Society for American Baseball Research as one of the top 100 minor league players of all time. He was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 1987. Following his baseball career, Mr. Layne managed the downtown Chattanooga Ira Trivers clothing store for fifteen years. Mr. Layne was preceded in death by his wife, Dorothy Graham Layne; parents, Elijah and Dolly Hudson Layne; and brothers Harrell, Meredith, Seth, and Jewell Layne. Survivors include a sister, Leona Graham, Whitwell; a son and daughter in law, Steve and Pennie Layne, Kingsport; a daughter and son in law, Beth and Brian Dowling, Signal Mountain; and four grandchildren, Lori Layne, Clemson, South Carolina; Andrew Layne Johnson City; and Maggie and Jack Dowling, Signal Mountain. Obituary: LAYNE, GEORGE ROBERT, age 97 of Knoxville, passed away on , 15, 2012 at The Ben Atchley State Veterans . He had lived at Arbor Terrace Assisted Living Community since , 2009 and at The Ben Atchley State Veterans since , 2012. While he was saved and baptized at the First Baptist Church of Coal Creek, Tennessee in of 1923, at the time of his death, he was a member of First Baptist Church, Concord. Mr. Layne was born on 6, 1914 at the family home in Coal Creek (Lake City), Tennessee. His father was a telegrapher with the Southern Railroad and his mother was a housewife. the death of his father in of 1924, he was raised at the Masonic For Widows and Orphans in the Iglewood section of Nashville. He worked on the farm there, played clarinet in the home band and participated in the Boy Scout program while he was there. He attended Isaac Litton and Jere Baxter High Schools, both public schools in Nashville. At Jere Baxter High School he played guard on the basketball team. were the Davidson Champion team for the 1930-1931 season. He then transferred to Isaac Litton High School after it opened. When he got back to Knoxville he worked with the WPA for a short time. In his professional life, Mr. Layne was a businessman working in Knoxville. His first job was at the old Holston-Union Bank; general bookkeeper Hamilton National Bank; office manager Huber & Huber Motor Express; office and credit manager Lays Packing ; business manager General Truck Sales; credit manager and assistant treasurer Fowler Brothers Stores; credit manager House-Hasson Hardware . He was a decorated combat veteran of World War II serving overseas for 27 months and 5 days with the United States Army in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany. He was a member of the Charles McKinney Lodge #433 F&AM for nearly 50 years, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite Mason and a lifetime member of the Kerbela Shrine Temple.
