Obituary: Ben Lam was born on 12, 1935, in the small village of Xin Hui in Kwang Tung province, China. He was born premature to parents Young Dung & King Ly Lam. He was a small and delicate child who was very spoiled by his grandmother, especially since he was the only son in the family. Ben was very intelligent, loved to read and write, and because he was so talented, he was accepted to the University of Chung Shan. At that time, Ben was the only one in the village to attend college. He left college to return home to the village to work as a farmer and village executive. He was a humble man with open arms. Despite his position as the village executive, he never abused his power and always maintained an open door policy to listen to and resolve village matters. He had a tremendous love of history and literature, and the people in the village would come by his home nearly every evening to hear his stories. He always welcomed visitors, and would frequently write letters for people and teach them English, never for want of money or fortune, but always from the goodness of his kind heart. He was an artist; gifted in the art of calligraphy and he drew beautiful landscapes. He was a wonderful listener, a benevolent leader, and a calm, patient man who would always help people with their problems. He married his wife May in 1961, and together they had five children (3 sons and 2 daughters). He was a loving and caring father, and instilled his kindness and forgiveness to his kids. He put on an un-tiring effort rearing his kids with the virtue of honesty and integrity, and had stressed the importance of education. All his kids grew up to be righteous citizens, hold various technical and managerial positions, have all made constructive contributions to the society, and brought positive inspiration to friends and families around them. The kids all got married, and collectively have given 10 grandkids (5 boys and 5 girls) to continue on the family name, much to Bens delight. His kids all loved him so much, and were by his side all the time while he was struggling with his long-term illness. Ben moved his entire family to the United States in 1984 to search for a better life. He and May eventually opened a restaurant in Troutdale, Oregon, and later a gift shop in Southeast Portland. Again Bens integrity and hard-working attitude had helped him established a stable and prosperous family in this land of opportunity. Despite of long work hours and deep involvement in his business, Ben never forgot to pause and help other people (friends and families) in need of assistance, especially for the new immigrants. His generosity had always extended to other family members, especially to his three sisters. He was always available for them, to fend for them, and to help them through difficult times with strong emotional supports. This is what family bonding is all about. He was survived by all his sisters, and they would never forget his brothers kindness and support. All families and friends wish him well, and may Ben found his eternal peace and happiness. A funeral service will be held on , 28, 2010 at 11:00am at Lincoln Memorial Park & , 11801 SE Mount Scott Boulevard, Portland, OR. Visitation will be on , 27, 2010 from 1:00pm until 5:00pm. Interment will follow the service at Lincoln Memorial Park. under the direction of Lincoln Memorial , Portland, OR. |
