Obituary: Clayton Leroy Lyons, age 69 longtime resident of Mobile, Al, passed away on , 16, 2014. He is preceded in death by his parents, James W. and Lorena Dean Lyons, sister, Rhonda Faye Lyons Andrews and son-in-law John William Bill Brierly. Mr. Lyons served his community with the Mobile Fire Department for 27 years at Lathan Station and his country in the United States Air Force Reserves. He was an avid Alabama football fan and loved his dogs, Lady and Tramp. Obituary: William Maury (Billy) Lyon, the only child of James Maury Lyon and Willie Mae Lewis Lyon, was born in Mobile on 29, 1927. Mr. Lyon is survived by his wife, Patricia Macon Lyon; two sons: William Maury Lyon, Jr. (Libba) and James Whitaker Lyon (Sue); four daughters: Patricia Lyon Garstecki (Gary), Nancy Lyon Haas (Leo), Victoria Lyon Stimpson (Ben) and Ashley Lyon Woods (Calvin); nineteen grandchildren: Maury, Christopher, Sara, and Mary Helen Lyon; Whit Lyon and Jaime Lyon Cooper (Colby); Allen, Allison and Patrick Garstecki; Alexander, Victoria and Anna Haas; Mae, Ellie, Julianna, Clara and Lydia Stimpson; Harrison and Anna Hunter Woods; two great grandchildren: Kyle and Cate Cooper; and two sisters-in-law, Joan Macon and Eva Macon. Mr. Lyon attended Old Shell Road School and Murphy High School. graduating from high school in 1944, he attended the Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina for one year before joining the Navy in 1945, where he served on the USS Chicago. Following the end of the war, he attended Auburn University and the University of North Carolina. college, he entered the drive-in theater business with T. J. Rester and Kenneth Giddens, opening the Air Show in Chickasaw and the Auto Show in Mobile. Shortly thereafter, he became a homebuilder with a lifelong passion for real estate development, partnering with Blacksher White-Spunner and Marl Cummings, Sr. to develop his first residential subdivision, Norwood, on the old Chickasaw Airport site. He developed scores of residential subdivisions, including Brookwood, Blacksher Downs, Tuthill Lane Estates and Carriage Hills, and sold lots to nearly every builder in Mobile. He partnered and developed numerous commercial shopping centers. He, along with Kenneth Giddens and Jay Altmayer, developed and built Bel Air Mall, which opened in 1966. Throughout the years, he continued to develop land, constructing subdivisions, shopping centers, office buildings, and residential homes in Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Florida and Georgia. He was one of the founding board members of Commercial Guaranty Bank in Mobile, which later became SouthTrust Bank, and also served on the Boards of Bel Air Corporation, Mobile Gas , First Southern Federal, Altus Bank, the Drug Education Council, and the Alabama School of Math and Science. He was a member of several mystic organizations. He was currently the longest active member of the Builders Association of Mobile and received the E. L. Jones award in 2002. He witnessed and played an active role in Mobile for so many years, helping countless individuals, bankers, builders, realtors, friends and associates along the way. At a time in his life when most would have slowed down, he was on the move seven days a week, always curious, ready to share a good story or tell a great joke. He, along with his wife, Pat, are members of several civic and charitable organizations. Mr. Lyon grew up in First Baptist Church, and in 1980 became a member of Ashland Place United Methodist Church. He enjoyed spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His generosity with his time and other assets in assisting friends and total strangers with alcohol and substance abuse problems is well known. He will be remembered for his generosity, kindness, unwavering friendship and a deep desire to help others. She is preceded in death by her husband of 44 years, Luther Martin Lyon, Jr. She is survived by her two sons, Phillip Alan Lyon and Jeffrey Lee Lyon and a host of loving nieces, nephews, friends, neighbors, and her Gardendale Baptist Tabernacle Family. Louise worked as bookkeeper for over 20 years at Fullilove Automotive for over twenty years. She owned Gardendale Alterations during the 1980s and 1990s. Louise had a passion for sewing and she sewed for over 80 years and was still doing alterations for the public. She always said I don have customers- are my friends. She will be missed so much. Obituary: Gaylord Clark Lyon, Sr., a native and lifelong resident of Mobile, Alabama died at home on , 4, 2010 at age 88. He was preceded in death by his father, Franklin Heard Lyon, his mother Lettice Lee Clark Lyon, and sisters Lettice Lee Lyon Morton of Baltimore, Maryland and Lyla Heard Lyon Binnings of New Orleans, Louisiana. Born on 4, 1922, he attended Leinkauf Elementary School, Phillips Jr. School, Barton Academy, and Murphy High School. Beginning in 1937, he attended Episcopal High School in Alexandria, Virginia as a boarding student and after graduating in 1940, went to work for Strachan Shipping in Mobile. During 1942-1946, he served in the U.S. Army. In 1951, he founded his own company, Gaylord C. Lyon & Co., Inc., a real estate, mortgage brokerage, and insurance company. As President of Gaylord C. Lyon & Co., Inc., he expanded into the real estate appraisal business taking the American Institute of Real Estate Appraisers courses and receiving his MAI designation in 1961. He was elected to the Board of Directors of Mobile Gas Service Corporation in 1973 and served on the Boards of both Mobile Gas and EnergySouth until 2007. He also served on the Board of Directors of the Mobile Board of Realtors. He was an active member of St. Pauls Episcopal Church and served on the Vestry of the Church. He was an active participant in several mystic organizations and was a member of the Country Club of Mobile. An avid outdoorsman, he loved dove hunting and fishing in Cocodrie, Louisiana with the Loose and Radcliff Groups. Known affectionately by friends and family as Dede, he was honored to serve as godfather to fifteen godchildren. A devoted husband, a loving father and a kind and generous friend, he was a man whose company everyone enjoyed. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Betty Gray Hays Lyon; son Gaylord Clark Lyon, Jr. (Janet); daughter Madeleine Lyon Downing (Edgar); six grandchildren: Gray Lyon Garrett (Kirk), Gaylord Clark Lyon, III (Jill), Jody Lyon Brinson (Charles), G. Obituary: Betty Gray Hays Lyon, a native and lifelong resident of Mobile, Alabama, died at home on 30, 2016. She was born in Mobile on 22, 1923. Betty Gray was preceded in death by her husband of 65 years, Gaylord Clark Lyon, Sr., and by her parents, Madeleine Maury Hays and Charles Gray Hays. She is survived by her son, Gaylord Clark Lyon, Jr. (Janet) and by her daughter, Madeleine Lyon Downing (Edgar). She is also survived by six grandchildren, Gray Lyon Garrett (Kirk), Gaylord Clark Lyon, III (Jill), Jody Lyon Brinson (Charles), Joseph Richard Mighell Lyon, George Edgar Downing, III, and Madeleine Maury Downing; and by six great-grandchildren, Rebecca Rose Lyon, Marianne Hays Lyon, Liles Kirkman Garrett, Joseph Mighell Garrett, Charles Poyntz Brinson, and Lyla Gray Brinson. Betty Gray lived in Springhill her entire life. She graduated from Murphy High School in 1940 and from Randolph-Macon Womans in Lynchburg, Virginia in 1944 where she was a member of Kappa Delta sorority. She was active in many local organizations including the Junior League of Mobile and several mystic societies. She was a lifelong member of St. Pauls Episcopal Church and served as President of the Women of the Church. She also served in various leadership positions of the National Society of the Colonial Dames of America in the State of Alabama. Known by friends and family as BG, she was a wonderful mother and grandmother and was kind and gracious to all. She enjoyed many years of her Bridge Club with dear friends who quickly realized that bridge was interfering with fun conversation and accordingly kept the name but did away with the cards. BG will be missed by her family and many friends. Her family is very appreciative of years of service from Cricket McDaniel and from caregivers, Anna Anthony, Sabina Arrington, Linda Mitchell, Alycia Tanner, and Francine Moffett. services will be held at St. Pauls Episcopal Church on 4th at 11:00, preceded by visitation in the Parish Hall at 9:30. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to St. Pauls Episcopal Church at 4051 Old Shell Road, Mobile, AL 36608 or to Wilmer Hall at 3811 Old Shell Road, Mobile, AL 36608.
