Obituary: Edward J. Looney, devoted husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother, entrepreneur, activist, coach, and tireless advocate for those in recovery from the insidious disease of compulsive gambling passed away on , 2, 2016. Like a character in a Frank Capra movie, Ed made an indelible impact on the lives of so many people throughout his lifetime. Serving and helping people was his lifes work. Whether it was through the iconic Clifton landmark, Henrys Liquor and Deli, through his years of coaching baseball and mentoring many young men, or through his work with recovering compulsive gamblers, Ed was at his best helping others. His hallmark was to accept challenges in his life head on, and turn them into a positive. He accepted those he met without judgment, and helped instill courage to those in need who wanted to make positive changes in their lives. His inspiration to continually work on becoming a better person, one day at a time, will live on in the many people that have been touched by his wonderful life. Ed was born on 16, 1935 to Ella Claire and Edward Looney, and spent most of his life in Clifton. The second of five children, Ed could be found playing with his brother John and his many friends on the streets, playgrounds and parks of the Albion section of Clifton. Ed was a standout baseball player and graduated from Clifton High School. Ed studied business at Farleigh Dickinson University. Eds life changed forever on the 4th of , 1954. He was at a nightclub in Greenwood Lake when across the room; he spotted he most beautiful woman he had ever seen. He told his date he was leaving to buy a pack of cigarettes, excused himself, and approached the Marilyn Monroe look alike. Although he was embarrassed to use his real last name, he asked her for a dance and she obliged. It was truly love at first sight and Ed married Marie in 1956. Ed and Marie started a family right away and had 6 children over the next 11 years. As a high energy young man who loved games and sports, Ed developed an interest in sports gambling. When that interest turned into an obsession, his gambling began to take over his life. Ed faced a crossroads that would eventually come to define his life. Heavy in debt, and with nowhere to turn, Ed was at the end of his rope when he found the rooms of Gamblers Anonymous (GA) and asked for help. It was one of the many times he accepted a difficult challenge and, through hard work, turned it into a positive. He went to his first GA meeting that night, learned about the 12 step program, and Eddie L. continued in the GA fellowship for the remaining 47 years of his life. He devoted much of that time to helping others. As a young father, Ed worked in the food distribution business where he developed relationships that led to an opportunity to own his own business. Ed and Marie purchased Henrys Liquor and Deli in Clifton in the early 1960s, and they raised their six children in the upstairs apartment. Over the next 25 years, each of the children, and many of their friends worked in the family business, so it was a true Mom and Pop operation. Henrys became a meeting place for many of the neighborhood kids and it was a great time for Marie and Ed and the Looney Family. When faced with a challenge, Ed would never back down. When he was told by the State of NJ that he had to sell a gallon of milk at a minimum price, he sold it for less. a Coca Cola salesman pressured him unfairly for more shelf space, he told him to leave with all his products and sold only Pepsi from that point forward. When the editor of the local newspaper began to print incorrect facts about Ed and other local citizens in its gossip column, Ed began a grassroots campaign to stand up to the injustice. He organized a petition and Ed and approximately 200 other citizens marched into City Hall and were heard. In fact, his wife Marie delivered a famous line that night when she said of the Mr. Potter-like editor, He messed with the Bull and now he will get the horns! The editor was found guilty of libel and the newspaper went out of business. Ed served as the varsity baseball coach for Pope Paul VI High School in Clifton. When he learned that his high school players were not eligible to play on the towns other American Legion baseball teams, Ed started his own team, the Clifton Patriots. He used his own resources to buy the team equipment, uniforms and all travel fees. Although he never won enough games to be hired to coach his beloved Yankees, he was well respected in the coaching community and a favorite coach of many of his players. When the last of his children left for college, Ed and Marie sold Henrys to a long time employee and friend and helped transition it to new ownership. a fire destroyed the original building in 2014, Eds son-in-law Danny rebuilt the building better than ever. Henrys is still going strong and is now in its 6th decade. the sale of Henrys, Ed became an advocate for compulsive gamblers. His goal was not to abolish gambling; he just wanted resources available for compulsive gamblers who were seeking help. Ed was instrumental in establishing and promoting the 1-800-Gambler telephone number that appears on lottery tickets and billboards and can be heard on the radio and television. This simple message has been used to save countless lives over the past few decades. Ed became an expert on problem gambling and made many speaking engagements to conventions and organizations to spread the message of recovery. Ed served as the Executive Director of the Council on Compulsive continued...
