Obituary: Margaret May Logan, 87, of Independence, MO passed away on 10, 2016. Visitation held from 6-8pm Wed., 13th at the McGilley & Sheil Chapel, with rosary recited at 7pm. Mass of Christian Burial 11am Thurs., 14th at St. Marks Catholic Church, 3736 Lees Summit Rd., Indep, MO. Burial in Leavenworth National on , 15 at 9:00 am. Margaret was born at the family home at 5234 Scarritt Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri, on 3, 1929 to Kathleen (Porter) and Orvill Pearce. Margaret, the middle of three children, her older sister, Jackie and younger brother, Eddie all lived a happy life together despite the familys significant financial challenges. During their childhood Margaret said her father would take in other families to live with them until they could get on their feet. She said although they didn have much, they shared what they had. When Margret was just a young girl her father Orvill was tragically killed in a railroad accident. Her mother, Kathleen had to go to work to support the family. Despite these difficult challenges Kathleen was able to provide a good home with the help of her family. Margaret attended Glennon High School a Catholic School in Northeast Kansas City. High School Margaret went on to become a registered X-Ray and Lab Technician. She worked with the USO and for a short time was a singer. At a dance at the Bamboo Hut on 40 highway in Kansas City she met James Logan and wed at age 23, on 2nd, 1952 in Crawford Arkansas. Their marriage was difficult for the first few years as James had grown up without any family as an orphan and lived with over a dozen families while growing up. As such, James had difficulty understanding the role of husband and father. James who had falsified his age to join the Army at age 15, had already served in World War II and Korea and suffered from what is now called Post Dramatic Stress Disorder. At times they lived apart during the early years but came together and moved to Germany as a family with their children, Karen and Michael in tow. lived in Germany for three years and spent their weekends exploring all of post war Europe. visited Austria, Belgium, Holland, France, and Italy until they finally were transferred back to Fort Riley Kansas, where they lived for 9 years. Margaret always talked about how difficult it was missing her mother during those three years in Germany. When they arrived in New York from Germany the family got into their 1958 Volkswagen with a luggage rack on top and loaded to the gills. drove straight through to Kansas City so Margaret could see her mother for the first time in three years. Many years of happiness followed as the family was able to visit Kansas City almost every weekend just 3 hours from Fort Riley. In 1965 James received orders to transfer to Hawaii. Once again separating Margaret from her mother, this time for 22 months. The family returned home to Kansas City on Halloween night 1967 and Margaret was once again reunited with her mother. James officially retired from the Army in 1967, and never fully embraced the life of a civilian. Margaret and Jimmy as she called him, spent every weekend with her family in Kansas City. When they both retired they spent their winters in Donna, Texas living next door to her family. Each purchased adjacent lots and became winter Texans. Many happy days were spent in Donna, Texas living next door to her bother Eddie and his wife, Joyce; on the other side cousin, Patsy and Gene Stone, behind here were her sister and brother-in-law, Jackie and Marvin McCart, and her mother Kathleen, and Joyces brother and sister-in-law Sandy and Bill Moore. James was diagnosed with cancer at age 70 and Margaret cared for him until his passing at age 72. Shortly after James passed Margarets bother, Eddie also passed. Margaret also care for her mother in her home until she passed at well over 100 years old. Margaret also diagnosed with cancer and many other illnesses never lost her since of humor. She loved music. She loved to sing and dance in the morning, which was not always appreciated by James or the children. Margaret loved rock and roll music from Adele to ZZ top. She would crank it up in the car and sing along. Everyone knew her favorite song was Proud Mary. Margaret tempted fait on many occasions trying to dance with her walker. Just hours before her passing she was listening to oldies music on the TV and tapping her foot with the music, even when barely conscious. She always had something light hearted to say even when times were tough. She always seemed to be able to make lemon aid from lemons. Margaret was a devout Catholic. Where ever she was on this earth on morning she found a Catholic Church to attend. She never missed Church. She always believed in the power of prayer. As her health declined she always regretted she could no longer drive to church on . I think the folks at the local body shop, and the other church goers, as well as a few mail boxes may have had a moment of silence when Margaret announced she was no longer going to drive. There will never be another Margaret like her, she lived her life on her own terms. She called the shots on everything including asking for Hospice when she was ready to go, and passed away early morning with her family at her side after receiving last rights. Margaret lived a rich full life. She traveled the world, she kissed the blarney stone, and she visited Rome and the Vatican in her later years with her sister, Jackie by her side. She found a continued... |
