Obituary: LINDSAY, Barbara Hochenedel, 66, fortified with the sacraments of Holy Mother Church on , 24, 2016. Loving mother of Douglas M. Lindsay; dear sister of Jeanne (Terry) Carmack; dear daughter of the late Paul and Sophia (nee Sluka) Hochenedel; dear friend to many. YESTERDAY I LOST MY DEAREST FRIEND, MY DEAREST MAMA My mom passed away Holy morning. She was 66. Barbara Lindsay spent the last nine years without once leaving the room in the nursing home where she lived. She was physically unable. She lived every day of the last quarter century in pain. She showered me with love. She lived a life of heroic virtue, and of awe-inspiring humility. The warmth in her voice revealed her inner joy, and she cared deeply about those who cared for her in the nursing home. I was her only son. My father abandoned us when I got sick, and I cared for her even when I could walk less than 50 feet. To understand her life, consider this: She was so physically limited in her hospital bed that there were only a few days a year that the sun came into her window, reflected off the wall, and shone on her skin. She knew the time of year - right around now, I think - that shed get to feel the suns warmth on her. The pain she lived in was indescribable. Her life and her body had to be carefully arranged for her to avoid terrible injury and muscle spasms. The joy and kindness she offered to so many was unbelievable. She was my model for grace in the face of suffering. My gentleness, my exceptional attunement to the safety and personal energy of others - these things came from my mother. came from caring for her, from living with her, from keeping her safe, from watching and following her example, and from being her son. I told her of an article I plan to write. Its about using the question why? to find out if you e living a life thats running from something or running towards something. To find out if you do what you do and choose what you choose because you e trying to avoid what you fear, or whether you live your life running towards something you love. In her last weeks, my mother read pages torn out of a small Lenten prayer book that my Aunt Jeanne brought to her. It wasn even from this year, so the dates were all wrong. To my mom, a math and chemistry major and a former research scientist, this would have been a nagging annoyance. Yet she read about Jesus, the poor, the sick, and these brief meditations each day. years of being somewhat tight-lipped about God, she burst open. For years shed judged herself harshly for falling asleep while praying. I told her God loved her prayers, and that He brought her calm and sleep - in her life filled with pain. To fall asleep while talking gently to someone you love each day - I told her that was a blessing. But recently she told me. She told me about the daily meditations and about how shed begun imagining herself alongside Jesus, living the mysteries of the Rosary. What would it feel like to be scourged? To follow Jesus path? She lived these things vividly. An artist and a genius - who gave me my lovely problem solving mind - I can imagine her alone in her dim room, laying on her side, mystically engaging the mysteries of the Rosary. And in her last few days, I noticed that she was in a gentle and joyful mood. I noticed too that shed ceased living in fear. She was no longer afraid. I told her of my progress on things and my ideas, and she noticed that I was doing well too. Yesterday morning after a night where she struggled to get comfortable, her nurses aide Samantha adjusting her as best she could, my mom went to sleep after 7 AM. Samantha asked her if she was all right. She apparently said, This is the most comfortable Ive been all night. I hope I can get some rest now. Samantha said, I pray that you find comfort and rest. A few hours later, they found my mom in the same position, laying on her side. Shed passed with a gentle smile on her face. The life of pain and anguish that shed borne so gracefully had passed. I saw her yesterday. Sixty-six going on thirty - she looked. She lay in peace. Truly out of pain for the first time in a quarter century. Her room at the nursing home was filled with things she loved. I saw them and studied them and was moved by them. She had an entire wall of photos - nearly all of me. Me in a wheelchair. Me standing. A prayer written out in pen by my aunt or cousin. A nurse from Africa who only occasionally worked with mom said Barbs body is going to science for research? Thats what she said. The nurse was insistent. And she was right. I said kind of. sharing at least an hour with my now passed mom, I began a hard afternoon of beating the bushes in more than one state to figure out how to get proper supplies to get DNA collected, so our familys unusual condition can be studied in the future. (Yes, probably by me. and probably only with additional great effort.) But effort for one you love is part of what life is about. I got what we needed, and my mom is at peace. I don believe she knew she was going to pass away. I believe she simply shared what was flowing from the abundance of her heart. Like some saints Ive read about, continued... |
