Obituary: Mr. Frederick Milton Fred Long, 88, of Pearl, Mississippi and formerly of Sylvester, died , 8, 2014 after a lengthy illness. A Graveside Memorial Service will be held , 20, 2014 at 11:00 AM in the Hillcrest . Rev. Mike Davis will officiate. Mr. Long was a World War II veteran who served in the Pacific theater. He had lived in Sylvester for many years before moving to Pearl, Mississippi to be near his family. Mr. Long was very active in the community having served several terms as a Councilman for the City of Sylvester. During his time on the council, Mr. Long helped secure a major business to settle in the Sylvester area while helping to make several improvements in various neighborhoods. He served as the Voice of the Golden Rams for the Bands field shows and as a Band Parent Booster. Mr. Long was a Boy Scout leader for many years, taking the Sylvester/Albany Boy Scouts to the National Jamboree at Valley Forge and to the National Meeting at the University of Indiana. He helped several boys, including his own son, achieve the rank of Eagle Scout. Mr. Long received the Silver Beaver for Outstanding Work in Scouting Award and the Order of the Arrow Award. He was a member of the Pinson Memorial United Methodist Church, serving as a Steward and Trustee for several years. Mr. Long sang in the church choir as soloist and was the Narrator for their Christmas Programs. He taught a School class, cooked breakfast for the Methodist Mens Group as well as being a M.Y.F. Counselor and housing Youth Directors for the summer. Mr. Long served as a missionary to Chile where he helped build two churches. Survivors include his wife of 66 years, Mrs. Louise Wenzel Long; daughter, Karen Long Wilson (James); grandchildren, Louisa Wilson Bonds and James Michael Wilson; great-grand children, Adalyn and Brady Bonds. Obituary: Mary Elizabeth Long, 98, passed away on 9, 2015 at Hospice Ministries in Ridgeland, MS. Visitation will be from 10 \ 11am , 10, at Parkway in Ridgeland, MS. A brief service of worship will be held at 11am. Burial will be at 2pm at Lakewood Memorial Park, Jackson, MS. with staff from First Presbyterian Church of Jackson and her two sons officiating. Betty was born 30, 1916 in Kosciusko, MS to William Comfort Leonard and Verna Boyd Leonard. graduating from Kosciusko High School, she attended Belhaven , then graduated from Ole Miss in 1938 where she was active in the Delta Gamma Sorority (Alpha Psi chapter), founded in 1873 by her grandmother, Mary Comfort Leonard together with Anna Boyd Ellington and Eva Webb Dodd. She married John Wade Long of Sallis, MS in 1939 while John was in medical school at Tulane University, New Orleans. At the outbreak of WW2, they moved to Tampa, FL where Capt. Long served as chief flight surgeon at McDill Field (McDill AFT). the war, they moved to Rochester, MN where Dr. Long completed his surgical specialty, then moved to residency, Jackson in 1949 to begin practice. A faithful member of First Presbyterian Church of Jackson, Betty was Superintendent of the Cradle Roll Department for over 25 years. Untold hundreds of adult Jacksonians have been told the story of a pert, red-headed Betty Long visiting their home when they were infants with a Welcome card, a little white New Testament, and a copy of the Childs Catechism. She was also active in the Junior League, and the Garden Club of Jackson. Betty was preceded in death by her husband, John Wade Long (1998) and her son, James Leonard Long of Slidell, LA (2010). She is survived by her sons, John Wade Long, Jr. and William Comfort Long, her grandchildren (who called her Nanaw), John Wade Long, III, Rebecca Elizabeth Lance, Mary Elizabeth Roberts, Jamie Long, Melissa Long, Mary Long, Elizabeth Long and Amy Long; and, her great-grandchildren, Tyler and Trinity Long, Nathan, Adelaide and Asher Roberts, Charlie Reid Lance, and Amelia Grace Long. The family wishes to extend its heartfelt thanks to St. Catherines Village of Madison, MS where Betty lived from 2000 until just before her passing, and to Hospice Ministries of Ridgeland, MS where she was very lovingly cared for during her final week of life.
