Obituary: Dixie Lee Lowden, age 67, of Little Lake, passed away on 23, 2015 in her home after a very long struggle with cancer. She was under the loving care of her family and U.P. and Hospice at the time of her death. She was born on 14, 1948 in Negaunee to Reno and Ella Hiisala. Dixie lived in the Upper Peninsula for the majority of her life where she was a bartender throughout the years for several different establishments including the Deer Lodge, Rustic Tavern, Browns Bar and the American Legion. She then moved to Turkey with her former husband and lifelong friend, David Lowden, for ten years so Dave could work as a Civilian Defense Contractor. Dixie spent those ten years working at the PX Store on the air base. When they moved back to the U.P., Dixie worked at the VFW in Gwinn as a bartender and held that position right up to the point of her illness. She spent the next seven years battling her cancer with a variety of treatments, many of which made her very ill. Dixie was a fighter and had a strong will to live. Sick or not, she pushed on. Her sister Shirley Toliver moved home from Alabama and became her best and dearest friend and life savior. spent days and hours laughing and reminiscing. Dixie loved going to the casino and playing bingo with her mother, Ella and sister, Shirley. When the trio got bored with bingo they would jump in the car and explore the U.P. Dixie also enjoyed having barbecues at her home, where she could spend time with her entire family. She is survived by her mother, Ella Hiisala of Gwinn; three children, Gail ODell of Little Lake, Fred (Jill) Hodgkin of Green Bay, WI and Jackie Hodgkin of Gwinn; six grandchildren, Derek, Teara, Ashley, Taylor, Allen and Brian (Sarah); six great-grandchildren, Aaron, Joshua, MaKayla, Mason, Josie and Walden; three sisters, Mae Goedart of Marquette, Shirley Toliver of Gwinn and Peggy (Jim) Parrott of South Carolina; also several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father, Reno Hiisala and her brother, Reno Hiisala, Jr. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. on , 18, 2016 at the pavilion in the Peter Nordeen Park in Gwinn with Rev. Ron Libey officiating. A celebration of Dixies life along with a barbeque will follow the service in the park. The Canale Gwinn is assisting the family where memories of Dixie may be shared at canalefuneral.com. |
