Obituary: John F. Logan, 84, died among family in his home on , 29, 2014. The son of Michael and Mary Logan, John was raised in Brighton, MA. He is survived by Marie (Connors) Logan, his wife of more than 53 years, his three sons, Mark D. Logan and his wife Nancy, Barry A. Logan, and Brian E. Logan and his wife Maria, and seven grandchildren, Michael, Steven, Katherine, James, Burke, Miles and Nieve. He also leaves devoted in-laws, John (Jack) Connors and Kathleen Walsh, nieces, nephews and their children, and many treasured friends. John lived on his own terms, with enthusiasm and loyalty to his family and friends. three years of military service with the Army (1954-1957; some stationed in Germany), he returned home to work as an electrician at Raytheon. He then worked as an electrical engineer for the Clevite Corporation and on guidance systems at Sylvania. John went on to join the Boston School system, where he worked for twenty years as a teacher, primarily of electronics, and as a principal of the Bullfinch School. Through that period, John and Marie acquired multifamily residential rental properties, mostly in Newton, which they managed and maintained. Theirs was the essence of a family business. John and Marie deciding together on purchases and sales, John spearheading upkeep, Marie maintaining the books, with their boys pitching in on everything from hedge trimming to replacing hot water heaters (all three carry memories of hopelessly trying to remember which tool they were just sent to the back of Dads station wagon to retrieve for him). Johns unconventional path and success highlight his determination, independence of spirit, steadiness and energy. Through the changes of direction, creative problem solving, and simultaneous shouldering of more than a dozen home mortgages, each night Marie slept securely with the knowledge that John would provide. He has, and so much more. John and Marie met at a dance hosted by a NH ski club. This should surprise no one, since sports and activity marked their family life. Chandlers Pond in winter and the sandlots of Bug Village in Brighton were Johns first proving grounds. At Brighton High School, he was quarterback, center on the first line of the ice hockey team, and first baseman. Can you have a higher sports profile in high school? He played ice hockey at the Boston Skating Club into his 50s, downhill skied into his 60s, water skied into his 70s, and played tennis and golf into his late 70s. He shared his love of sports with Marie and his sons and many of his friends. Super-8 home movies capture the title bouts his boys waged against their father when they wereas toddlers. John was always there to support, encourage and inspire their athletic pursuits (often applying a prideful inflation of accomplishments when boasting to his friends). Marie and John were companions on the tennis court and the golf course. On calm summer evenings, they might even have been known to take each other water skiing without an observer in the boat. John was an intrepid explorer of the backroads and wooded driveways of New England (he possessed a unique ability to ignore Private and No Trespassing signs). On one such adventure early in their marriage, John and Marie came upon a densely wooded lot of land on the eastern shore of Long Pond. It did not look like much, but, there, John built his family summer cottage, the Cape House. The memories and joys that cottage has witnessed are far too numerous to relate. It shaped the childhoods of his sons. John and Marie took great pleasure in sharing their Cape House with friends, and hosted annual summer weekend retreats with them. In later years, John reveled in the joy his grandchildren experienced there. You have not seen the sun set until you have seen it set behind the cranberry bogs across Long Pond from the Cape House. This place is a measure of his vision and will forever be a part of Johns legacy. Johns home address never strayed from the Boston area and he maintained lifelong friendships with elementary school classmates. Yet, he traveled the world with Marie and his family, visiting every continent (except Antarctica), and the Panama Canal in his last year of life. John revered education. As the father of a young family, he completed his engineering degree at night while working full time. His informal education was no less inspired. His name might still be recognized at the Boston Public Library for all the books he requested they purchase so that he could read them. He assisted tenants with getting library cards. He made teaching his career. He taught himself the real estate trade, investing, sailing, tennis, etc. He was an autodidact and a free thinker, nearly always scratching out a plan of some kind on a small spiral notebook. His dedication to his sons education could not have been greater. John may be the only person in history to have read Barrys dissertation front to back. Johns example informs every moment of his sons parenting. John achieved an exquisite balance of expectations and opportunity for his sons. He involved them in the family business in meaningful ways. He exposed them to the wider world. He shaped and supported their ambitions and set healthy boundaries. On any given , he might have plucked a son or two from their plans for idle play to help him with an apartment, ending the day by sneaking in an ice cream soda before dinner. He was an authority figure and fun to be with at the same time. He communicated the joy he felt at being with his family and organized his work life around it. He lovingly called his grandchildren Chief, Captain, or Princess. He told his sons that he loved them at every greeting and parting. Every single time, for a lifetime. John will be deeply missed. His good cheer, steadfastness, insights and love will forever enrich our memories. continued... |
