Obituary: Lt. Col. Richard Ross Larson Born on 28, 1923, in Multnomah, Portland, OR, to the parents of Charles and Maybelle Larson. His parents were charter members of the Multnomah United Presbyterian Church USA, in Portland OR. He had one brother, Charles Jr, 15 months older than him (he passed away 2010. His Elementary school yearbook read: Dick Larson-“Puts all his knowledge in his height.” His 50 year high school reunion read: “I am married to Mildred and we have two daughters, three sons, five grandchildren and one great grandchild. I am a physicist (retired) and enjoy computers (I help at the local library with personal computers.) I spent 30 years with the US Government – US Geological Survey – (was involved with analysis of “moon rock” returned by astronauts.) My specialty was in x-ray spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. I am now a stated clerk of Potomac Presbytery – Presbyterian Church in America. Mildred is an editorial secretary.” He had a BS in Physics from Oregon State 1947, and MS in Physics from Oregon State 1949. He also attended University of Washington (Pre-meteorology) and University of Chicago (1944 certificate Meteorology). To use up his GI education he studied and got a private pilot license. He was in the Army Air Corp- served 3/8/1943 to 6/5/1944 (in active) and 6/5/1944 to 8/20/1946 active. The Army Air Corp became the Air Force where he served from 8/26/1946 to 2/1/1969.He served in the Army Reserve Corp, later became Air force Reserves. He retired from US Air Force Reserve as Lt Col in 2001. His specialty in the service was Meteorologist (Weather man) stationed in Kelly Field TX. This was a very important job during WWII since they did not have the technology that we have today. He also received the Victory Medal during the American Theatre Campaign. He met Mildred (Howe) at Wallace Mem United Pres Church, where they were married on a (choir night), before rehearsal – both were members of the choir, Mildred an alto, Richard a tenor(his last time singing in Wallace choir was 27, 2011). Mabel Sawhill did their reception. had 5 children: Patricia, Richard, Timothy, David and Mary. At his death he had 10 grandchildren, and 7 great grandchildren, whom he loved dearly. He was a Red Cross blood donor until about age 60, and donated over 12 gallons of blood in his lifetime. He volunteerd at the Beltsville Library. He and Mildred used to swim with a senior aquatics group 3 days a week at the Fairland Aquatic center. He was an election judge for many years in both Prince Georges and Montgomery . He liked to read (when young he read a lot of Science Fiction), do Sudoku, crosswords, and play spider solitaire and Mahjong on the computer. He had a collection of rocks, and some moon rocks. He is well known for wearing bow ties (most of which Mildred made). He was a member of Wallace since early 1950, taught School; helped with Stockade and Boys Brigade; helped with VBS; sang in choir; served as Treasurer for Wallace for many years; ordained as ruling elder in 1970. Clerk of Session for many years, up to May 2011. He helped with Senior fellowship; Whirlybirds, and Jet Cadets, and Nursery with Mildred. He was stated clerk of Presbytery when it was DelMarVa Presbytery. He was the first stated clerk for Potomac Presbytery; then Chesapeake was created from Potomac when it split. Richard stayed with Potomac via Wallace Pres until resigning 5/2011. Memorial service will be held on , 30, 2014 at 11am at Wallace Presbyterian Church, 3725 Metzerott Rd, Park, MD 20740. Obituary: Herbert Edwin “Ed” Larson, Staff Sergeant, U.S. Army (Retired) of Darnestown, MD, entered into eternal rest at Walter Reed National Military Medical , Bethesda, MD, on , 4, 2016. Born on 28, 1943, in Hartford, CT, Ed was the son of the late Herbert Sigurd Larson and Harriet Allard Larson, brother of the late Harriet L. Brannen, and brother-in-law of the late Ellen J. Larson. He is survived by his wife, Dr. Marjorie Warnick (Gazvoda) Larson; son, Michael H. Larson, Lehigh Acres, FL; brothers, David S. Larson, Niantic, CT, and Douglas A. Larson, Hebron, CT; aunt, Birchie A. Hutter, Bartlett, TN; Beloved Pet Basenji, MacArthur; brother-in-law, Michael R. Brannen, FL; nephews, Montgomery (Mary) Brannen, FL; Erik C. Larson, VT; niece, Amanda (Mark) Sargent, CA; stepson, Edward (Myra) Gazvoda, CO, children, Grant, Garrison; stepdaughter, Michelle (Thomas) Wentz, MD, children, Steven, Zachary, Thomas III, Sean, Jilzie; and several special grandnieces and grandnephews. Ed grew up in West Hartford, CT, where he attended Conard High School and later Old Lyme High School, CT, before enlisting in the Army at age 17. While in the military, he earned his high school diploma. serving his country with pride, Ed attended Liberty University in Lynchburg, VA, where he earned the Diploma of General Bible Studies from the Institute of Biblical Studies in 1986. His army career included service in the United States, South Korea, Germany, and South Vietnam where he suffered life altering wounds on 18, 1968, while serving with G Troop, 2nd Squadron, 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment, the Legendary Blackhorse Regiment, in the Vietnam War. His military honors include the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, Good Conduct, National Defense Service, Vietnam Service Medals, and Expert Infantry and Expert M14 Rifle Badges. Ed was extremely proud to have served in the Blackhorse Regiment under then COL George S. Patton III, 39th Colonel of the Blackhorse. Ed was a Life Member of the 11th Armored Cavalry of Vietnam and Cambodia, Disabled American Veterans, Association of the United States Army, and a Founding Sponsor of the National Museum of the U.S. Army. SSG Larson’s memorial service and interment with Military Honors will occur at Arlington National , Arlington, VA, at 11 o’clock on 19, 2017.
