Obituary: Portland- Fred Laughlin, 78 passed away peacefully of natural causes on , 13th at The Bellavita in Scarborough where he had been residing for the past 8 months. Fred was born on 21, 1938 in Portland, Maine the son of the late Curtis S. Laughlin and Dorothy (Taylor) Laughlin. Fred attended Deering High School where he was a 4 year member of the band and cadets playing the clarinet, graduating in 1956. Following graduation he continued on to The University of Southern Maine at Portlands Gorham St. , later enlisting in the US Coast Guard where he continued his love of music playing in the United States Coast Guard Band for 3 years. He continued to stay on as part of the Coast Guard Reserve for 25 more. Freds strong work ethic began at the young age of 12 when he would work on a fishing charter boat during the summers. graduating from college he worked at Fairchild and as a second job operated and owned his own cab in Portland until settling into the US Post Office as a mail handler for the next 29 years. Because he worked the night shift Fred could be found for breakfast every day at Kathy & Daves Restaurant until retiring at the age of 76. When Freds kids were young he would love to take them snowmobiling and for road trips to Florida. He was proud to say he was one of the first 80,000 people to enter Disney when it opened. Fred never missed his sons football games and even in college he would drive to wherever he played. He traveled to Italy to visit his son there and enjoyed going to Arizona to pan for gold. Since a young boy Fred loved spending the summers on Great Diamond Island with his parents and brothers and on his old Chris-Craft boat. As the years went by he enjoyed stopping into the neighbors, sharing stories and attending lobster dinners at the hall. By far his greatest joy was spending time with his son and his family and watching his grandchildren at their sporting events. Fred was sweet and generous and always happy to join in the family activities. We all loved his traditional lobster bisque he made for Christmas Eve. A secret talent he kept under wraps. He is survived by his son Phil Laughlin, his wife Christine, and his grandchildren, Zack Labbe, Matthew and Nicholas Laughlin of Cape Elizabeth, his brother Stuart Laughlin of Kennebunk, nephew Robert Laughlin and niece Catherine Laughlin of Manchester CT. He is also survived by his ex-wife Nance Ivers of Kingman, AZ. Fred will be sadly missed by his daughter in laws family, including her parents, sisters, aunts and cousins. He was a fixture at all the family holidays and birthday parties, loved by all. Fred was predeceased by his daughter Gail Laughlin and 2 brothers Ernest Laughlin of Kittery and R. Bruce Laughlin of Manchester CT. We would like to send a special thank you to the staff at Bellavita in Scarborough for their kindness and genuine care for Fred. It gave us peace of mind knowing he was happy and well cared for. Friends and family are invited to attend a time of Visitation on , 17, 2016 from 5:00-7:00 P.M. at Jones, Rich & Hutchins 199 Woodfords St. Portland, Maine. A funeral service will be held on 18, 2016 at 11:00 A.M. in the funeral home. Interment will be in the spring at Evergreen with Military Honors conducted by the U.S. Coast Guard. Obituary: Curtis Stuart Laughlin Jr., 82 PORTLAND- Stuart Laughlin, 82 played his last game of chess with us mortals with adjournment called on 4th 2016, at Kennebunk for and Rehabilitation where he resided for the last eight years. Stuart was born on 18, 1933, in Portland, Maine, the son of the late Curtis S. Laughlin and Dorothy (Taylor) Laughlin. Following generations of family tradition, Stuart was a deacon at Woodford Congregational Church, not far from where he lived his life in Portland. Stuart attended Deering High School and later went to college to become a teacher. He taught for a short time in Brunswick, Maine. In a combination move, he returned to the family homestead in Portland and purchased a Victorian era cottage on Great Diamond Island, where his family had summered since 1900. Stuart had a very thoughtful and deliberate manner in everything he did. This likely contributed to his being an extraordinary teacher. As a substitute teacher in Portland, he was greatly admired by his peers and held a critical position working with students in special education. Other teachers noted his ability to connect with students that needed extra support. Stuart could make us stop what we were doing, review our actions and reconsider our choices, by simply uttering ow, now in his caring teacherly tone. Stuart loved games and was a member of the Portland Chess Club for most of his life. Many of those years he was the president of the local chapter, organizing many historic tournaments. Only until his health began to fail did he miss the night meetings. The other evenings were spent visiting neighbors on the island for dinner, sharing stories and games of cards. Stuart also played tennis, cared for the old clay tennis courts and taught many children to become proficient players themselves. He is remembered for an amazing tennis serve accompanied by catch phrases, like Christmas in . Stuart loved life on Great Diamond Island and especially the community. He has been referred to as a legend of volunteerism. He served as board secretary of the Diamond Island Association for decades and was even credited for holding the group together. He was an original member of the Casco Bay Island Transit District and served the needs of all islanders for years. On Great Diamond Island he organized the movie nights for the children, and always kept the fires burning for all of the lobster suppers and 4th of celebrations. He is survived by his nephew Phil Laughlin; his wife Christine; and grandnephews, Zack Labbe, and Matthew and Nicholas Laughlin. He is also survived by a nephew, Robert Laughlin and a niece, Cat Laughlin of Manchester, Connecticut. Stuart will be greatly missed by his family including generations of cousins, and fellow islanders on Great Diamond Island, where he was a major piece of the community and the island community was the focal point of his life. Stuart was predeceased recently by his brother Frederick Laughlin of Portland. He was also predeceased by his other younger brothers, Ernest Laughlin of Kittery, R. Bruce Laughlin of Manchester, Connecticut and a niece, Gail Laughlin of Portland. Many people will miss Stuart Laughlin and an island community will have to adjust with this loss. Obituary: Alton Eugene Laughlin Alton Eugene Laughlin, 69, of Buxton, passed away on 26, 2009 at Mercy Hospital. He was born in Bowdoinham, Maine on 6, 1940 to Richard W. and Annie (Cunningham) Laughlin. He attended Portland schools and was a member of the Maine National Guard from 1958 to 1964. He owned and operated several businesses in the Portland area, including Altons Variety, Mr. Ls Diner, was a part-owner of the Westbrook Dunkin Donuts, and owner and operator of Laughlins Variety in North Deering. He later worked for Harris Baking , first as a route salesman, and then as the Division Manager for Southern Maine. He then worked for Fassetts Bakery as a route salesman, and most recently as an independent distributor for Thomas English Muffins and Arnold bread in Southern Maine, until his retirement in 2001. His lifelong passion was harness racing. He bought his first horse in the mid seventies, and was an owner/trainer of many different horses over the course of the next thirty years. In 1986 he moved to Buxton where he was able to stable his horses and train them at home. He also boarded horses at his Buxton location, primarily harness horses until 1 of this year. During that time, he helped deliver at least three foals. He belonged to the USTA, Maine Farm Bureau and MSBOA. He was respected by all who knew him and was entrusted with the care of many horses that raced both in Maine and other northeastern location. He was a devoted family man. He married his childhood sweetheart Janice Cronkite on 22, 1960. raised their family in the North Deering section of Portland until moving to Buxton in 1986. He coached his sons Farm League baseball team, and always enjoyed watching his sons participate in baseball and football. His love of sports continued and when his grandchildren were old enough to participate, he was always there to root them on. As recently as two weeks ago he traveled to Berwick to watch his youngest grandson just beginning to learn basketball. He also enjoyed his granddaughters dance recitals. He never missed an opportunity to show his love to all of his family. He leaves so many that loved him. He was the neighborhood Gumpy to his grandchildrens friends and other neighborhood children. only recognized him as Gumpy, not Al or Mr. Laughlin. What a wonderful legacy. He was predeceased by a son, Timothy Scott Laughlin in 1970, his sister Helen L. Childs, brother Gerald B. Laughlin, niece Terry Gower and his parents. He is survived by his wife of 49 years, his sons Mark and his wife Amy of Buxton, Todd and his wife Tamra of Gorham, and Scott and his wife Kerry of Berwick. Grandchildren Katie & Drake of Buxton, Justin, Joshua and Kylea of Gorham, and Kaleb, Brianna & Abby of Berwick. Nieces Brenda Moody, Vickie Cormier, Coleen Berry, Margaret Laughlin, Kathy Ricker, Cindy Cronkite, Roxanne Allen, Annette Corliss, Gail Caird, Susie Aman and Sandy Steinberg, Nephews Richard Childs, Steven Childs, Gerald Laughlin and Walter Laughlin, Stephen Cronkite, Bruce Cronkite, Richard Cronkite, John Cronkite and Stephen Cronkite. Also many great and great grand nieces and nephews.
