Obituary: Robert Louis Little, Sr. was born on 1, 1924, on a Riverfield Plantation in Concordia, LA to Charles Esler Little and M. Reola Hayes Little. He grew up in and around Bunkie, LA with his brothers and sisters "CV", Joe, Doris, Opal, and Mary. He also spent time at his Aunt Bonnalees farm with his cousins "AC", Gintz, Ethel May, "Reanie", Junior and Joe. He worked hard as a child on the farms, but was always proud that he knew how to grow and harvest food, cook a meal, and preserve food to last through the winter. And it stuck with him, as he made Poinsettias last past and onto the next Christmas season. He talked about how s were spent socializing with family and friends on the front porch, playing spiritual hymns.

He enlisted himself into the Navy at 16 years old on 2, 1940 and rose to the rank of Coxswain before his discharge on 10, 1945. Only 5 days later, on 15, 1945, he joined the Army and rose to the rank of Sergeant. He was released on 29, 1949. This time, he only lasted a day before signing up with the Air Force on 30, 1949. He was a veteran of World War II, along with several campaigns. He retired from the military on 29, 1953, as an Airman First Class. In his years of service, he spent time in the Pacific Islands. Later, he was stationed along the Gulf Coast in places including Sweetwater, TX and Mobile, AL.

He met Rose Mary McCloskey through letters she wrote to him after his friend (Rose;s friend Sues husband) told her no one ever wrote to him. (His sister Mary says, this was not so since she wrote to him all the time, but it got him the girl, didn it?) Eventually, they met at the train station when he was traveling through New Orleans. He came home to dinner with her family, and their courtship began. wrote letters and visited on weekends for three months before he presented her with a marriage license in 1947. Rose Mary McCloskey and Robert Louis Little, Sr. were married on 6, 1947, at St. Rose of Lima Church on Bayou Road in New Orleans, LA.

spent some of their young married life stationed in Mobile, Al, then back to New Orleans on St. Ann Street. Then they moved to Sweetwater, TX, but returned to St. Peter Street in New Orleans. had five children: Robert Louis, Jr., Charles Joseph, Mary Frances, James, Vincent, Sr., and Stephen Aloysius., their children gave them 11 grandchildren: Ann Marie, Kermit, Wendy, Tonya, Christophe, Melissa, Julie, James, Jr., Rebecca, Blaine and Samantha. Those grandchildren then provided them with 14 great grandchildren including: Brittany, Brandon, Bryan , Robert, Kelsey, Ashley, Katie, Tyler, Alyssa, Peyton, Joshua, Robert and Jeremy.

He was a hard worker as evidence by his long career after he left the military. He worked at Orleans Broom and Mop Factory, and a broom factory in Sweetwater, TX. He began his 25 year career with Kaiser Aluminum in the pot-room and quickly worked his way up to machinist. While on strike, he worked for both Roemers Texaco station and Scallon Brothers. He retired from Kaiser after 25 years in the late 1970s but he didn stay retired for long. He went on to work for Noel Construction for several years, building houses. He built some of the houses in the Grandlake subdivision, including the house they live in on Toledo Court.

During his lifetime, he remained close to his extended family including the Gintz, Hayes, Bellegarde, McCloskey and Pitcher families. The neighborhood of St. Ann and St. Peter Streets were a close one, with everyone helping friends and family make repairs or paint houses in his spare time.

That tradition continued when Bob moved his family to California Street in Kenner. That neighborhood was a close knit one, and it might be hard for an outsider to tell which children belonged to which family as they all did things together. Including rounding up all the kids for haircuts at Mr. Bourgs barber shop on s. Bob loved to fish and he and his sons often went fishing and shrimping on weekends. Many times theyd come back with so many fish or shrimp that theyd hold a fish fry for the neighbors. Even the time his son Bozie knocked him overboard into the icy cold water, they went on to fish and caught a boat full.

Although he worked hard, the yearly family vacation to Panama City and the Y Hotel were a tradition. And everyone still talks about the cross-country trip to the Grand Canyon and California.

He remained as avid gardener and farmer throughout his life. For may years, he spent every weekend building a family farm on his property in Poplarville, MS. raised cattle and grew a vegetable farm there for many years. When his health stopped him from traveling to Mississippi every weekend, he started a garden in his backyard. The last crop of sweet potatoes still remain partially in the ground.

He was a proud member of Woodman of the World. If there is such a thing as being a member of the Depot club, then he was a member of that too. He loved watching professional baseball and football games (especially the Saints and Tulane University). If LSU weren so successful, maybe hed like them too, but he always loved the underdog. And he loved his NASCAR races. Dale Earnbardt, Tony Stewart and Jimmy Johnson were his favorite drivers.

Bob was an emotional man who believed in taking action about what he believed in. (And he had beliefs about a lot os thins and wasn shy about sharing them with you.) He was a friendly sort of man who seemed to know everyone in the neighborhood. He continued...
