Obituary: Florence Lucille Schlicher Long, 92, of Riverview Hills Village in Keokuk, Iowa, formerly of Donnellson, Iowa passed away , 20, 2015 at 3:45 p.m. Born 22, 1922 in Donnellson, Iowa, the daughter of Benedict Michael and Emma (Weber) Schlicher. She was married in Seattle, Washington, 10, 1945 to Glenwood H. J. Long. She is survived by one son Michael (Lee Ann) Long of Macomb, Illinois, daughter, Miriam (David) Grimes of Keokuk, Iowa, granddaughters, Michele Long, of Macomb, Melissa Long, of Hannibal, Missouri, Jennifer (Steve) Grimes Wright, of Greenfield, Wisconsin, and Kristin Grimes, of Shawnee, Oklahoma; great grandsons, Elijah, Silas, Ezekiel, and Malachi Wright, of Greenfield, Wisconsin. She was preceded in death by her husband Glenwood and her parents Ben and Emma Schlicher, daughter Muriel Rae Long, and granddaughter Erica Grimes. Florence graduated from Donnellson, high school in 1940, received her teaching certificate from Iowa State Teachers in Cedar Falls Ia.. She began her teaching career in Eddyville Ia in 1942, taught in Bloomfield, Ia and Ft Madison Ia before moving to Seattle, Washington when Glenwood was due to return stateside from duty in the Pacific. were married and returned to Iowa as soon as he was discharged from the U. S. Navy. She then began a 40 year teaching career in Donnellson, teaching first Kindergarten in 1953 and later second grade until 1994, retiring at age 71. She loved teaching and remarked that retiring was a very sad day of her life. While teaching she received her Bachelors degree from Iowa Wesleyan , Mt Pleasant, Ia and her Masters degree from Western Ill University, Macomb, Il. 1968. She was a 66 year member of Artaban Chapter #483 Order of Easter Star serving as Worthy Matron 1960,1999. And 2000, and also held State office in 2001. Florence was a tireless member of American Legion Auxiliary Gillaspey-Moodie Unit 474 since 1946, unit president 3 times; district president; Iowa Department President in 1978, and National Central Division vice-president in 1994. She held many other state offices as well as 15 years as a Girls State Counselor, which was an American Legion Auxiliary program she always proudly supported. Cremation rites have been accorded with a private family memorial service, and burial of cremains at the Evangelical in Donnellson. In lieu of flowers the family requests donations to the Iowa Legion Auxiliary Girls State Merit Scholarship. Obituary: Everett Long, age 86, of Albia, passed away 17, 2015 at the Monroe Hospital in Albia. He was born 20, 1928 to John and Clara (Schurtz) Long at home in Monroe . He attended and graduated from Albia High School, Class of 1945. On 22, 1952 he married Barbara Ellen Cousins in Moravia. To this union five children were born Annie, Shirley, Melinda, Patricia and Mark. shared 53 years of marriage before Barbaras passing on 2, 2005. Everett farmed all his life, raising dairy cattle, hauling milk and later beef cattle. He also owned and operated the Moravia Sawmill. Everett was a member of the Congregation of Jehovahs Witnesses having been baptized in 1995. He enjoyed raising horses on his farm. He is survived by his 5 children, Annie Scott of Moravia, Shirley Marie (Larry) Curtis of Albia, Melinda (Charles) Myhervold of West Des Moines, Patricia (Michael) Bowen of Cameron, Missouri, and Mark (Susie) Long of Albia; 5 grandchildren, Melanie, James, Tessa, Jamie and Melissa; 4 great grandchildren, Charlie, Sophia, Wyatt and Penelope. Everett is also survived by a nephew, Dennis (Katherine) Walters and a niece, Connie Murphy. Everett was preceded in death by his parents, John and Clara; his wife, Barbara; a sister, Barbara; and 2 grandchildren, Stephanie and Tabitha. Per Everetts request his body has been cremated and there will be a visitation from 2-6 p.m. on , 20, 2015 at the Tharp in Albia, with the family present throughout. A private family burial will take place at Hickory Grove at a later date. Due to allergic conditions, the family requests no perfume or flowers. A memorial has been established to the Kingdom Hall of Jehovahs Witness in Albia. |
