Obituary: Herb Losse was a pain in the ass. Or arse as he liked to say it. He was stubborn and strong-willed, demanding that what he wanted needed to be done right and right now. And that fire translated into a passion. He regularly showed his pride in and love for his family, an outward trait not often seen in men of his generation. The only child of a baker and homemaker (who later flipped houses), Herb grew up near Jersey (or JOYzy) City in a small basement apartment as a child. At age 18, he enlisted in the Air Force and served in the Korean War, seeing active duty in Okinawa. While stationed at MacDill Air Force Base in Tampa, he met Bess at a USO dance in 1951. The two dated briefly and wed in 1952 at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church in Ybor City. Before she died in May 2013, the two had been married for nearly 61 years. his commission with the Air Force, Herb worked odd jobs, including selling sewing machines (although he was incapable of sewing on a button). When the couple started a family, Herb decided he had better get an education so he could provide for his children, Michael and Michelle. He began at the University of Tampa and later enrolled and graduated from the electrical engineering program at the University of Florida. He was a Florida Gators fan throughout his life, instilling the Gator Nation pride in his grandkids who followed him there. He often wore a ratty orange T-shirt that said My two favorite teams are Florida and anyone that beats Georgia. graduation, Herb went to work for Boeing on contracts for NASA. He worked on missile guidance systems at Cape Canaveral. Later in life, he visited Kennedy Space with his grandkids and pointed out the towering missiles in the rocket garden, saying I worked on that one…I worked on that one… When Herb left Boeing for Honeywell, he and Bess moved back to the Tampa Bay area – first to Safety Harbor before settling in Seminole, where they lived for more than 40 years. Herb spent the bulk of his career at Honeywell, where he worked on defense industry projects, mostly classified. He enjoyed an early retirement due to hearing loss, which was brought on by chicken pox when he was a child and later exacerbated during his time in the military. That retirement came shortly after three of his grandchildren (Kristen, Paul, and Lindsay) and his daughter, Michelle, moved back into his home. With his newfound free time, Herb was able to fully enjoy the fun of being a grandpa, with all the benefits of being a dad but without the work required of him when his own children were young. Nano, as his grandchildren called him, was in charge of summer pool time at the neighbors (but the kids had to scrub the tile), building model rockets and other machines out of discarded phones and electronics, and special trips for a treat at a fast-food restaurant. He often remarked that one of the best things that ever happened to him was having those three monkeys disrupt his retirement. Herb enjoyed politics … to a degree. Which is to say he wanted to express his opinion and to hell with everyone elses. He was a staunch Democrat and liked to remind everyone each 19 that he shared a birthday with Bill Clinton. Herb also enjoyed jokes. Hed clip cartoons to share or drop a joke hed found. He also liked to make remarks he found funny (but usually weren ) – delivering a quip, for which he was unable to hear the reaction. As a child of the Depression Era, Herb had simple desires. He understood the value of saving money and spending thriftily. He researched every big-ticket item he purchased, from cars to televisions, on consumer reports. And he kept a simple wardrobe of khaki or navy shorts and white polo shirts with topsiders. One year he went so far as to return a garden hose from Santa because he could get it cheaper at Kmart. He was impatient, demanding, and as an electrical engineer thought he knew best how EVERYTHING should work. Even his dishwasher, which was clearly not constructed with the proper configuration to clean dishes (so he would reload them several nights a week). But he also had soft spots. When a new dog came into the family he cursed and muttered under his breath that he didn what that hing in his house. Soon, Ginger had a warm spot in his recliner and next to him in his bed (which Bess hated). Herb was an active member of the MINNREG retirement club at Honeywell for many years. As part of that, he cooked in a gourmet club. Each month, several couples would gather for dinner – with a team of men taking to the kitchen to whip up a four-course meal while the women chatted and sipped White Zinfandel. Herb maintained the groups growing cookbook, and the linguini with clam sauce remained a favorite of his for years. He also enjoyed golfing. He had a membership at Bay Pines in Seminole, and later he joined Timber Pines in Spring Hill. He proudly displayed a commemorative hole-in-one ball in the entryway to his Seminole home. He and Bess also bowled together in a couples league for many years. Herb was preceded in death by his wife, Bess. He is survived by his children: Michael (and Debbie) Losse and Michelle (and Murray) Mackey; five grandchildren: Ariane (and Jerry) Horton, Kristen (and RJ) Reed, Paul Moczynski, Lindsay Moczynski (Bryan Hall), Graham (and Jennifer) Losse; two stepgrandchildren: Karl and Jon Mackey; seven great grandchildren: Kaitlin, Nicole, Andrea, Ellie, Craig, Aidan, Henry; and two step great grandchildren: Jordyn and Jayden. |
