Obituary: Sumio was born on 23, 1924 in Fresno, the only child of Seiichi and Tomiko Kubo. He passed away peacefully at home on 1, 2016. He attended schools in Kerman, graduating in 1941. In his youth, Sumio was a gifted athlete, competing in kendo, baseball and basketball. Though he began his college education at the University of California, Berkeley, he returned to Fresno State at the onset of World War II. Due to the Executive Order 9066 which resulted in his parents internment in Arkansas, he transferred to Washington University, St. Louis to pursue his undergraduate and dental education. Thanks to the kindness of neighbors who tended the family farm during internment, Sumio and his parents gratefully retained their property in Kerman. He completed the orthodontic program at the University of California in San Francisco. Dr. Kubo began his professional practice in downtown Fresnos Mason Building in 1949. He married Sayo Hosaka in 1952 and was called to military service in 1953 at Fort Sam Houston. Sumio was assigned to practice orthodontics for officers and their family members in Orleans, France, where daughter Kathleen was born. The couple returned to Kerman in 1955 and their family grew over the next 5 years with the addition of sons, Robert, Howard and James. Sumio deeply valued the rural lifestyle in which he was raised. He built homes for his parents and young family on the farm though this required a long daily commute. He was a devoted family man who also served his community by participating in numerous organizations. Sumio was a member and president of the Optimist Club of Fresno, an active member of the Biola Japanese Community Organization, founding board member of Regency Bank, member and president of the Fresno-Madera Dental Society, member and president of the Fresno Betsuin and served in a leadership role for the Buddhist Churches of America. He continued his orthodontic practice for 45 years, proudly welcoming sons Robert and James to form Kubo Orthodontic Group. Upon retirement, Sumio returned to his roots in managing the family farm. Sayo and Sumio enjoyed traveling with longtime friends, Mits and Sachi Mizutani as well as numerous trips with their children and grandchildren. Though quiet by nature, Sumio was an avid and vocal fan who relished recent championship seasons of the San Francisco Giants and Golden State Warriors. Sumio was passionately committed to the goal of building the Family Dharma and Hondo for the Fresno Buddhist Church, chairing the Future of Buddhism Committee for many years. sharing 62 years of marriage, he lost his beloved wife, Sayo, on 10, 2015. He is survived by daughter, Kathleen, sons Robert and wife Stephanie, and James and wife Jenny; grandchildren Alyson Kennon, Cole, Jacqueline, Makayla and Kylene Kubo; sister-in-law Aya Yamakoshi; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and son, Dr. Howard Kubo. A Memorial Service will be held at the Fresno Buddhist Family Dharma at 2690 E. Alluvial on , 11, 2016 at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to the Fresno Buddhist Temple Building Fund, 1340 Kern Street, Fresno 93706 or a charity of your choice. |

Obituary: Kenneth Isao Kubo of Santa Clara, California died on 22, 2016 at OConnor Hospital in San Jose, CA. He was 74 years old. Ken is survived by his mother Mary Tokiye Kubo, his children, Kenneth Takeo Kubo of Portland, OR and Kelly Ann Taggart of Payette, ID, his Grandson Kai Takeo Kubo, and his brothers Vincent, Samson, Larry, Eddie, and Kenyon of the Bay Area in California. He was preceded in death by his father Isamu (Sam) of Santa Clara, CA, and his sister Edna, also of Santa Clara, CA. Ken was born on 1, 1942 in Arcadia, CA to Mary Tokiye and Isamu Kubo. His birth came as the family was en route to the Heart Mountain War Relocation in Wyoming. Mary went into labor at the Santa Anita Racetrack. Although she made it to the hospital before he was born, Ken always claimed he was orn in a barn. He spent his early years observing and learning from those around him. Always eager to pass on knowledge, he decided to show his mother what he had observed about starting and driving a car. He was able to successfully relay instructions on how to start and steer the car. Unfortunately, he had not yet learned about stopping. On that first car trip, he and his mother Mary made several trips around the neighborhood before using a tree for a brake. Ken grew up in Santa Clara and graduated from Buchser High School. graduation, he went on to study at San Jose State University, work two jobs, get married, and become a proud parent to two children. He also began practicing martial arts. Through his life, he would achieve black belts in aikido, judo, kendo, and archery. He went to Japan on several occasions to practice and test, including under Osensei, Morihei Ueshiba. Ken went on to be an instructor and founded the Lockheed Aikido Club. Ken worked for over 25 years at Lockheed Martin as a System Engineer. When asked what that meant, he would always say it was classified. His work took him to many parts of the world, including Scotland and later Las Cruces, NM. He enjoyed those details as he always enjoyed travel and meeting new people. While in Las Cruces, Ken became involved with the Civil Air Patrol. He found great enjoyment in teaching young people about aerospace science. When he returned to California, he continued his support of aviation by working with San Jose Civil Air Patrol Squadron and volunteering at the Hiller Aerospace Museum. He also found deep enjoyment in Hawaiian culture. He spent time with local Hawaiian musicians, learning to play the ukulele, and even learning how to hula. Ken will be remembered for his love of family, friends, and a nice long chat. He was always quick to lend his time, skill, and support where it was needed. His appetite for life and adventure will be dearly missed by all who were lucky enough to know him. A service is scheduled for 1:00 pm on 16, 2016 at the Lima Family Santa Clara Mortuary. All are welcome to attend and celebrate Kens life. A reception will follow. Memorials should made to KKUP in honor Kens love of Hawaiian culture and communication. |
