Obituary: THE STORY THAT CAN FINALLY BE TOLD THE (unauthorized) BIOGRAPHY of HAIG KONJOYAN! As was the norm in the day (May 11, 1917), Haig George Konjoyan was born at home in Detroit, Michigan. With Haigs birth, his proud Armenian immigrant parents George & Margaret Konjoyan were only one child away from completing their family of 2 daughters and 2 sons (Martys arrival was almost 6 years later in of 1923.) By then, the family had already re-rooted to the west - Fresno, California. Once there, young Haig loved spending time at the family fruit packing house - where fruit was shipped all over the country. The Konjoyan Klan (Haigs father George and Georges brothers; et al) did very well and eventually transferred most of that wealth (almost a million dollars!) into the booming stock market of the 1920s. In spite of that (temporary) wealth, when young Haig wanted a bicycle, his only choice was to assemble one on his own, made-up of scraped parts. (Editors note: A much older Haig [then 58 years old] still hadn lost his ouch for being thrifty! In 1975, while driving his vintage 1965 Cadillac [read that as: eat-up and ruining on only 5 of 8 cylinders!] he was cited for speeding on the 405 fwy. As the story goes, when Haig was informed of the reason that he was pulled-over, Haig gleefully thanked the CHP officer for validating that his car was no slug! Editors additional note: Haig should have also been cited for violating the oise code- the car also needed new engine gaskets and new mufflers!) Well, back to the 1920s... as you probably expected, the Klan lost everything when the Great Depression hit. By 1935, Grandpa George moved (now teenage) Haig and the rest of the family to East Los Angeles. He told his family that if they ever could make extra money again it would be invested in LAND! - "You can print land like you can print stock certificates!" With a few borrowed dollars, they opened a small family grocery market - working long days (hours of operation: 6 a.m. to 11 p.m.), they even saved enough to buy some land on Ventura Blvd & Van Nuys Blvd, in Sherman Oaks. (Editors Note: Unfortunately, [years later] the aforementioned work ethic was not inherited by Haigs first child, and only son Craig!) We e now in the year 1942: Haig has enlisted in the U.S. Navy (a perfect choice, considering the fact that he could barely swim and had a fear of drowning!) Haig served on the USS Aldebaran - One of only 2 food supply ships dedicated to restock every floating U.S. vessel that was at sea in the Pacific Theater. When he wasn working on (as well as unking next to) the refrigerator equipment, Dad enjoyed playing poker with his fellow (and after almost each game) less wealthy shipmates. In 1944, while Haig was still serving in the Navy, the family moved to Sherman Oaks where they would now reside as well as operate their new grocery market - both on newly acquired lots on Ventura Blvd. - (Editors Note: Some people [to this day!] still believe that the timing of such a move was a [failed!] attempt to ditch young mariner Haig!) Meanwhile, it can now be reported that Haig single handily won the Pacific Theater and brought a swift end to world conflict - (Details of such will be revealed during the "Celebration of Life" ceremony - May 21st @ Craigs house!) By late 1945, "Money Bags Konjoyan" (via one Western Union transaction from Seattle, Washington!) had sent over $5,000 of war-time poker winnings back to himself in Southern California. Many theorize that this (and only this!) may be the reason why the family (reluctantly) evealed their new Sherman Oaks locations so that he could find home! Along with his honorable discharge papers, he brought home his Navy issued pea coat. That same coat (thought to be long-lost) was recently found on a hanger (unprotected) for over 60 years in a family garage. It has been carefully dry cleaned - and along with a reissue of his Navy cap - are on display here today. During the ensuing years, Dad worked as a butcher, serving fresh meats daily at the Ventura Blvd ("Belmont") Market. By 1948, the Butcher of Belmont met the love of his life, Tillie Babahakian... and a year later they married. She thought she was getting a wealthy, Casanova type; he thought he was getting a calm, stereotype 1950s obedient wife - THEY WERE BOTH WRONG! We don have any actual video to prove it; however, they must have enjoyed each others company at least twice during their 24 year marriage (Divorced in 1973): DNA results confirm that son Craig and daughter Carrie are Haig & Tillies children! - (This, despite years of both parents claiming mistakes made by [2 different] hospitals at or just after child birth!) As the mid 1950s arrived, Tillie would act as a traditional mother: taking the kids to school, clothing them, cleaning the house and preparing meals for the family; Haig would assume a somewhat different role: go to work, leave work and go to the horse races and then return home for dinner. However, it wasn always the same routine everyday for Haig. About 1/2 of the time hed go to work, then (just about the time he was ready to leave for the races) hed get a call from the Principal (Mr. Farnham) at Craigs elementary school. Even though Craig would probably disagree, Mr. Farnham was a most fair and very accommodating man - Eventually (according to Dad), the school provided a "reserved" parking space just for "Mr. Konjoyan"! The family remained in their Balboa Blvd, Encino house during the 50s and most of the 60s. Church was continued... |
