Obituary: Lillian S. Koch Lillian S. Koch passed away on , 7, 2009 at the Alzheimers Unit of Timber Ridge Senior of Eureka, CA. Here she was under the care of the excellent staff. Within the last year, Lillian was under the excellent care of the nurses and caregivers of Hospice of Humboldt. Her family would also like to thank Dr. Bruce D. Kessler for his wonderful and loving care. She was 87 years old. She was a native of Atlanta, GA. high school and secretarial school, she was the legal secretary of the Army Aircore Base of Atlanta where she met her future husband. were married after World War II and moved to New Jersey where her new husband was getting his Masters degree and Lillian worked as a secretary at E.R. Squibb & Sons. She then moved to Columbus, Ohio with her husband. It was there that it was determined that Lillian had pernicious anemia and had to have B-12 shots daily for all her life which she had. She had her first son William in Columbus and her second son Richard in Maryland where her husband was working for the Bureau of Standards in Washington D.C. Lillian had gotten so proficient in playing bridge (card game) that thru open tournaments she was selected for the U.S.A. Bridge Team to play against the Italian Bridge Team. She also took a course at Dale Carnegie Class No. 197 of 1958. She then moved to Indianapolis, IN where her husband was setting up a factory for P.R. Mallory to make Ceramic Capacitors. It was there that Lillian had her third child, Pamela Lynn. She then moved back east to Springfield, VA where her husband was setting up a second ceramic factory for the Motorala in northern Virginia. She spent time with the church, the children and collecting antiques. She then moved to New Jersey where her husband was asked to come to R.C.A. to set up another ceramic factory to make solid state power vacuum tubes for the coming up color TV sets. Lillian spent much time with determining the town in New Jersey with the best school systems which turned out to be Livingston, NJ. This was so successful that when her oldest son was in 7th grade he was placed in a class, with approximately twenty other students, which studied ahead with a faster pace. By the time he reached college he was thru calculus, so that freshman year was almost a repeat. She was also very active in the Womans Club and the collecting of antiques. This was an exciting time for them because Lillian obtained season tickets to the Paper Mill Playhouse. She always made sure that they had season tickets to the George Balanchine Ballet, the NYC Opera and the NYC Symphony, as well as the Modern Art Museum. The little French restaurant across the street was a favorite spot for Bill and Lillian for twenty years. In the summer of the mid-seventies Lillian, with her daughter, very much enjoyed going to Brazil seeing the Christ of the Andes, Reo, the ocean, and all the sights. The next summer the two had a great time visiting Norway, Sweden and Denmark. The following summer Lillian, with her husband, visited Rome and the Vatican with the Sistine Chapel, and up the coast to the Statue of David, and then to Germany to see King Ludwigs castle. also visited Homburg, Germany and the Oktoberfest with the Irish and Germans all singing together and drinking beer. Lillian did the same thing when her husband was asked by the Canadian government to teach the Physics Department of McGill University what super conductors were and how to make them. When Lillians husband set up a small factory to make Liquid Crystals for R.C.A., Timex Co. bought it out from R.C.A. including the employees. Then Timex decided to build a factory to make Liquid Crystal components in Singapore. Her husband showed the engineers of Singapore how he built the U.S.A. factory in New Jersey. Lillian and her husband were asked to come to Singapores new factory. This gave Lillian six weeks with a personal driver to see Singapore and Burma, the rubber tree plantations, the animals, and of course the Singapore shopping. In 1989 Lillian with her husband moved outside of Kansas City in a little town of Liberty, MO. She had a large swimming pool for her exercise, but by 1991 she couldn move her left leg properly so she got an electric scooter to get around on. She saw Dr. Violet Mastovitch, a neurologist and on the Board of Directors of the M.S. Society. The doctor did all proper x-rays confirming the exam of 1958 that she had M.S. She tried all known medicines, but they helped very little. She was told to keep up the daily B-12 injections. Lillian moved to Eureka at the end of 2001 and entered the Alzheimers Unit of Timber Ridge on the first of 2007. Lillian is survived by her husband William J. Koch; sons Dr. William J. Koch, Jr. and Richard H. Koch; grandchildren Christopher, Allison and Johnathon of son Bill Jr. and Lauren and Tara of son Richard; and six great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her mother Mrs. Lily Schumpert and Mr. Howell B. Schumpert; and daughter Pamela Lynn Koch.
