Obituary: Walter Richard Koepp was born on 12, 1927, in Wallowa, Oregon, to Herman and Marie Niederhauser Koepp. He passed away in Everett, Washington, on 21, 2014. Walt's first years were spent on the Oregon homestead with his parents and older sister, Marie. When he was 5, his family moved to a chicken ranch in Alderwood Manor near Martha Lake. It was there that Walt began a lifetime love of the outdoors. As a young man he ran a trap line and hunted ducks on the shores of Martha Lake. Walt married his sweetheart, Peggy Sather, when he was 19 and she had just turned 18. met through a mutual friend at Martha Lake where Peggy's parents owned a summer cabin. Their wedding took place in Ballard, where Peggy lived with her family. Two sets of bridesmaids and groomsmen who met at the wedding later married each other, creating a close group of life long friends. When he was a young man, Walt worked on a tugboat on Puget Sound and as a fire lookout for the forest service living in a lookout tower in the mountains of Oregon. college, he and his good friend, Don Bakken, opened an ornamental iron shop in Lynnwood which became very busy and successful. Unfortunately, Walt was injured on the job and could no longer do the physical work necessary in the shop and was forced to sell his ownership in the business to Don. Walt then began the next chapter of his professional life in sales. Walt began his sales career at J.E. Haseltine. He also worked for Industrial Air, Westinghouse and P&H Harnischfeger. In 1964 he was hired by Jack Shumway at General Welding Supply, a small business located on Marginal Way in South Seattle. Walt became the general manager and then owner of General Welding Supply. Under his leadership the business flourished and expanded to ten stores throughout Washington. When he sold the company in 1999 he retired from the business of selling to the business of playing golf nearly every day. His most frequent golf partner was his devoted wife, Peggy, to whom he was married for over 67 years. Walt was a very active father and his children and grandchildren will have great memories of their time with him: his famous burnt eggs prepared over the campfire; making chowder with freshly dug clams including some elusive grains of sand; trying to keep dry in our canvas tent after one of us "knuckleheads" had brushed against the inside wall, causing the rain to leak through. He also taught us how to fish, how to hunt, how to drive a boat, how to pitch a tent, how to pound a nail, and the most fun of all, how to waterski which we did every day in the summer on Martha Lake. He also showed us the importance of hard work and responsibility and provided an excellent example of those values throughout his life. He taught us how to succeed through confident effort, and he reminded us to have fun. Walt is survived by his very beloved and cherished wife, Margaret "Peggy;" his children, Steve (Betsy) Koepp and Teri (Rex) Jennings, both of whom have been devoted to their father and mother during Walt's illness, and another son, Kerry. Walt is also survived by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Services will be held on 1, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. at Purdy&Walters at Floral Hills, 409 Filbert Road, Lynnwood, Washington. Memorials may be made to The Nature Conservancy or Ducks Unlimited. |

Obituary: MARGARET JANE (SATHER) KOEPP Margaret Peggy Jane (Sather) Koepp was born on 30, 1929, in Seattle Washington, to Jacob and Sarah (Fureby) Sather. She passed away 20, 2015, in Kirkland, Washington, at the age of 86. Mom lived in Ballard with her beloved parents and sisters, Betty, Ruth and Louise until she married our Dad, Walter R. Koepp on 7, 1947, eight days after her 18th birthday. treasured each other for over 67 years until Dad's passing just 4 months ago, on 21, 2014. As a child, Mom attended Adams Primary School in Ballard and played the accordion, an instrument as big as she was. Because of her musical talent, she was chosen to play on the radio. Mom went on to attend James Monroe Junior High and Ballard High School where she was proud to be a Ballard Beaver. Lutefisk, lutefisk, lefsa, lefsa. We're from Ballard, ya sure, you betcha. During her school years, Mom was always accompanied by her best friend, Margaret Muggy (Liliedahl) Wans, with whom she shared many of life's milestones. Together they obtained their first after-school jobs: wrapping packages for mail order at Sears. both graduated from Ballard at the age of 16, after having skipped a grade. were bridesmaids at each other's weddings, took classes and traveled together. Mom and Muggy remained the best of friends all of their lives. Beverly Kristjanson, Helen Lehman, and Betty Bakken were also close friends through the years. she graduated from high school, Mom did typing and filing at J.L. Randal Insurance . Later, she worked at the post office during the busy holiday season. During the summer of 1946, Mom was enjoying a day on the shore of Martha Lake where her family had a cabin. Although she was not happy she had been given the chore of babysitting her little sister, Louise, it gave Mom the opportunity to meet and talk to two boys who came by in a rowboat. One of those boys was Walt Koepp, our Dad. Mom and Dad were immediately smitten with each other. a short courtship, Dad secured our grandpas approval to ask for Mom's hand in marriage and they were married at the Methodist Church in Ballard. Mom and Dad lived in Seattle for a short time before purchasing the Martha Lake cabin from her parents and converting it into a home for their growing family. lived there for more than thirty years. When the children were grown, Mom and Dad built their dream home right next door so they would not have to leave the lake they both loved. eventually sold the original family home to their grandson and his wife, Matthew and Shanna Koepp. Throughout her life, Mom was lively and active. She loved swimming in the lake every summer with family and friends. Mom also participated in bowling leagues, clubs for sewing and hiking, Norwegian studies, art and computer classes, water and snow skiing, fishing, badminton, neighborhood softball games, ice skating, horseshoes, picking blackberries, camping, river rafting, hunting, snorkeling, and baseball. Whenever someone needed batting practice for little league, Mom was the best pitcher in the neighborhood. Mom was also a great golfer, a sport she became active in after her kids were grown. It was not uncommon for Moms golf score to be better than Dads. Even though he acted chagrined by this, Dad was proud that Mom was so skilled. Mom and Dad often golfed with their good friends Jane and Joe Nishikawa and Ruth and Larry Jones. also took trips to Hawaii and Arizona to play golf. For many years, Mom was an active member of the Olympic View Women's Golf Club where she was captain and Ruth Jones was co-captain in 1978 and where she made many close friends. We often saw her name in the newspaper for winning tournaments and trophies. Mom always loved animals and nature. She took special pleasure in her view of Martha Lake: fish, ducks, and eagles, the water, trees and Mount Rainier. Mom often had an adored and spoiled pet. When they did not have a pet of their own, Mom and Dad would gladly dog-sit for other family members. Mom will be remembered most for her undying love of her family, the focus of her life. She took care of all of us: Dad, kids, parents, sisters, people in need. She was strong-willed and seemingly unstoppable; extremely capable at any task she took on; and a very, very fast driver. She loved her V-8 engine cars and was not above racing off the line at a stoplight when challenged. Those of us left behind, including her loyal dog and constant companion, Archie, will miss Mom every day. We will miss her voice, her hugs, her unflappable beliefs about right and wrong, her potato salad and her lefse. Most of all, we will miss her infinite devotion to all of us. Mom is survived by her children, Steve (Betsy) Koepp and Teri (Rex) Jennings, both of whom have been devoted to their father and mother through their respective illnesses. She is also survived by her loving grandchildren: Matthew (Shanna) Koepp; Katie (Scott) Schafer; and David Jennings; and great-grandchildren, Joey and Sally Schafer. She is survived by another son, Kerry. Rest in peace, Mom. We will love you and Dad forever. Services will be held on , 28, 2015, at 3:00 pm at Floral Hills Purdy Walters, 409 Filbert Road, Lynnwood, Washington. Memorials may be made to Doctors without Borders or The Nature Conservancy. |

Obituary: Koenninger died evening at the Ray Hickey Hospice House. His farewell column in The Columbian ran , the day after Koenninger entered hospice care. Koenninger had a 57-year career as a reporter, editor and columnist, including 37 years at The Columbian. Since 2001, Koenninger served as the papers editor emeritus. Its an elegant title for a man who once described himself as a word-butcher and whose news assignments included dangling out of an airplane, with one foot braced against a wheel, to take a photograph. Koenninger also found time to be involved in the community. At the time of his death at the age of 78, Koenninger was a member of Washingtons State Board for Community and Technical s. At the local level, he took part in educational, historical and civic committees and boards. And not to universal acclaim, his wife said. A lot of people thought that as a newsman, he shouldn be involved, Marilyn Koenninger said a few days ago in her husbands hospice room. Tom was very passionate about his community and about The Columbian and its role in the community, said Scott Campbell, owner and publisher of The Columbian. He was very engaged in serving on boards and community nonprofits, and saw this as one way to better the community and network with community leaders at the same time. More volunteers like Tom Koenninger equals a better society, said Charlie Earl, executive director of the two-year college board. Wed be better educated, healthier, more compassionate. He was so consistent in those areas. Son of Sara Koenninger came by his community connection naturally, as a local product who was raised in Sara, a community north of Vancouver. His formative years there were the subject of his last column. But that column actually was Koenningers second farewell piece. He penned his first version in 2000, when he announced his retirement as editor and vice president. In that column, Koenninger recalled memorable moments as a photo and print journalist. Like . Being held by the feet over the railing of a Navy ship so that I could photograph a whale. Ive aimed my lens close enough to raging fires to feel my face burning. My camera has pictured death in many forms, from acts of violence to automobile wrecks to plane crashes, he wrote, adding that his stories more often have documented the warmth of humankind. There have been hundreds of stories and pictures of people helping, nurturing and teaching each other. And in a 1997 column that was a tribute to former newsroom colleagues, Koenninger talked about the people who shared his vocation. (Jim) Hughes and I worked together at the dawn of our careers. He also introduced 35 mm photography to The Columbian. When I arrived the first time, in 1956, the newspaper had a Crown Graphic camera in a closet. It produced a monstrous 4-by-5-inch negative. The Crown Graphic was big and heavy, but it parted the crowds. Anyone who carried it was instantly identified as a member of the press. If someone got nasty, the camera could be used as a weapon, Koenninger wrote. Another time, Hughes was shooting pictures of construction of the navigational hump in the I-5 Bridge from my small boat when we heard a series of sizzling sounds. The steel workers were throwing hot rivets at us. Koenningers column also had a respectful nod for Erwin Rieger, whod been born during the Klondike gold rush and was an intimidating editor. Once Hughes and I decided to climb to the top of the Interstate 5 Bridge to get a higher view of ice floes in the Columbia River. We asked Rieger to give us a personal note or press card so we could get past the bridge tender. He refused. Anybody who can talk his way up the bridge isn worth the name reporter, he told us. We mastered that challenge, negotiated a heart-stopping, perilous climb to the top, and got pictures and the story. In 1973, it was Koenningers turn to run The Columbians newsroom. stops at Spokane and Centralia, he returned to Vancouver as executive news director. His tenure was marked by a period of explosive growth in Clark . Toms value to The Columbian and this community is really immeasurable, said Lou Brancaccio, editor of The Columbian. He was a brass-knuckle supporter of the importance of a daily newspaper and how a great daily newspaper can make a community better. Tireless explorer Gregg Herrington, a longtime newsroom employee, called Koenninger a master at meeting the needs of the community, his employees and the paper itself. He left his ego at the door while striving to make this a better place and leave his employees confident, enriched and proud to be in the business. He was an editor who never tired of exploring Clark - discovering and rediscovering its nooks and crannies and meeting its people. Invariably, he would return to the office bubbling with enthusiasm and produce a piece of scratch paper or napkin on which numerous story ideas were scribbled in a handwriting only he could decipher, Herrington, now a Battle Ground Public Schools spokesman, said in an e-mail message. Without question, Tom was the best all-around, I-can-do-every-job editor Ive ever dealt with, said John Brewer, former chief of The Associated Press bureau in Seattle. He was in incredible writer, said Brewer, now editor and publisher of the Peninsula Daily News in Port Angeles. He continued writing his column through his illnesses - cancer, then heart problems, then cancer again. Koenninger was a 1951 graduate of Clark , and he went on to the University of Washington. He was named a recipient of Clark s Outstanding Alumni Award in 1990. Through all the recent transitions in his life, her husband never considered himself a former journalist, Marilyn Koenninger said continued... |
