Obituary: In the song of life, Kim Yon Khung was surely the composer. A very observant man who would rather spend his time creating than talking, Kim preferred to live in a world of harmony where everything around him made sense. In fact, he depended on his sensory world to provide him with concrete data. A free spirit, Kim believed that actions definitely spoke for themselves. He seemed to know what fit and what didn fit in everything he did. Kim perceived that all of lifes possibilities were open to him, yet he lived with a definite sense of purpose. He was a man who was always ready to share his creations with those around him. Kim was born on 6, 1942 at his home in Khom Phong Thom, Cambodia. His parents were Kouen Khung and Im Hiep. Kim was raised in Cambodia. As a young child, Kim was optimistic in his outlook. He sought out the possibilities in a given situation and looked for ways to apply his creative energies. Kim rarely calling attention to himself, but when he did speak out, his message was clearly understood by those around him. Early on in his family relationships, Kim showed that he was a tolerant and flexible person, and he got along fairly well with everyone. He was raised with three siblings. He had one brother, Chindy Khung and two sisters, Kimjee Khung and Kimgoeum Khung. He was a calm and playful child who was adaptable to any situation. As he was growing up, Kim developed into a person who enjoyed physically doing things, and he took pleasure in using his hands in order to create. Whether it was drawing pictures, working with building kits, or even just tapping out a rhythm to play by, Kim liked concrete things. In his spare time he liked to play soccer. However, to Kim, the most fun he had was simply playing, and spending time with friends. A person who was sensitive to others feelings, modest and tolerant, Kim had the ability to become completely devoted to another when that affection was returned. On 25, 1966, Kim exchanged wedding vows with his wife, Kim Nay Siev at home in Siem Reap, Cambodia. Kim was exceptionally sympathetic and compassionate when it came to his children. These emotional bonds made him as much playmate as parent. He gave his family unconditional love and kindness, sharing his artistic nature by turning everyday events into creative play. Kim was blessed with five children, three daughters: Sokunthea, Sokunthida, Sereysokmean and two sons: David and Bunsang. were also blessed with eight grandchildren, Matthew, Jessica, Victoria, Arianna, Sabrinnah, Cornelius, Katelyn and Haley. Kim found ways to enjoy what he did for a living. He worked hard and did his best to succeed every day. His primary occupation was as an elementary teacher. Kim tended to be a team player, doing what was necessary in order to get the job done without imposing his will on others. Kim was in the Cambodian Army. Kim saw action for six years between 1969 and 1975 during the Cambodian Civil War against the rebels. Kims fellow soldiers saw him as a brother in arms and knew that he was as much a part of their family as their loved ones back home. Kim enjoyed his leisure time by taking part in various hobbies. His favorite pursuits were playing soccer, dancing and attending family gatherings. Kim was content to enjoy his hobbies alone but was also willing to share his interests with others. He was relaxed in his approach to his leisure time because he wanted to savor the present moment. Kim liked sports. Kim was also something of a sports fan and enjoyed following his favorite events whenever he got the opportunity. Tops on his list were football, basketball and soccer. Because he loved the world around him, Kim enjoyed traveling and going away on vacations. It was an opportunity for him to kick back and relax, to visit new places and experience new things. Kim put his personal trademark on any leisure planning that he undertook. Favorite vacations included trips to California, Phildelphia, New York and Washington DC. Kim passed away on 10, 2009 at his home surrounded by his loving family. He is survived by his wife, his children and eight grandchildren. Services were held at the Chapel at Forest Lawn in Seattle, Washington on 19, 2009 at 9:00 AM. Kim was laid to rest in Riverton Crest in Tukwila, Washington. Kim was a good man, a kind man, and a practical man who will for all time be remembered by his family and friends as being warm and deeply caring. He leaves behind him a treasury of life-long friendships and wonderful memories. Kim always had much to give and was able to make those connections in his life where his gifts were appreciated. Kim was a faithful, practical and loving person. Everyone whose life he touched will always remember Kim Yon Khung. |

Obituary: Saw Aung Khin, one of the first Burmese immigrants to move to the Seattle area and regarded by many in the community as its patriarch, has died. He was 79. Known as Grandpa to many ethnic Karen refugees from Burma living in the Seattle area, Mr. Khin, who died ( 25), helped them adjust to a new land while keeping their community together. He interpreted for them in job interviews. He shared his famous homemade egg rolls. And he often led communion at the Karen Community Church of Greater Seattle. He was the admired, beloved patriarch of the obscure Karen community of Western Washington, said Randy Jaffe, 59, a Seattle native who became friends with Mr. Khin in 1988 by accident. Jaffe was visiting his grandparents at a local assisted-living home when their nurse, Mr. Khin, came into their room. Jaffe, who met and married his wife in Thailand, asked Mr. Khin about his background. When Mr. Khin told him he belonged to the Karen ethnic minority, Jaffe introduced his wife, whos also Karen. Without hesitation, we were adopted into his family, Jaffe recalled. Extended family meant everything to Mr. Khin, who early on suffered staggering losses, according to his son, Simon: Born in the early 1930s in a village about 90 miles northeast of Yangon (formerly known as Rangoon), Mr. Khin lost his parents, an older brother and a younger sister to disease when he was still a child. He and an older brother were adopted by an uncle who didn have children. During World War II, battles between the Japanese and the British left much of Burma in ruins. Burma, now known as Myanmar, gained its independence in 1948, Mr. Khin became part of a regiment of ethnic Karen assigned to help rebuild the country. A 1948 photo, taken by an unknown photographer, shows the young, proud corporal standing at ease in crisp military pants, his sleeves rolled up past his elbows, a wide-brimmed hat tucked under his right arm. It was Mr. Khins favorite. Because he picked up English more quickly than his peers, he was assigned to the Insein Jail. When an American missionary was arrested and brought to the jail, Mr. Khin was assigned to process the paperwork and speak with the American consul trying to free the missionary. As Mr. Khin got to know the American consul, they became friends, and soon the American Baptist Churches started working to bring Mr. Khin and his family to the United States. In 1977, Mr. Khin, his wife and their five children flew into Seattle-Tacoma International Airport and were met by members of the Seattle First Baptist Church. The next morning, Mr. Khin woke up the kids and told them they were going to school. I brought you guys here, he said, as his son recalled. Now its time for you to do your part. Mr. Khin, in his 40s, worked odd jobs and went to school. Hed only had a fourth-grade education in Burma, but he eventually became a licensed practical nurse. He and his wife raised chickens and vegetables at their home in SeaTac. Mr. Khin also loved riding motorcycles and made egg rolls by the hundreds, even sharing his recipe on Facebook. A student of geopolitics, Mr. Khin lobbied the Seattle City Council unsuccessfully in the late 1990s to sever city ties with businesses that supported the military junta in Burma. As more refugees came to the Seattle area in 2006, Mr. Khins leadership helped many of the new arrivals. Yesterday I got a call from a Karen refugee in Minnesota, said Maggie Po, pastor of the Karen Community Church. The refugee came to Seattle in 2007, Po said, and Mr. Khin took her to job interviews, interpreted for her and helped her get on her feet. When she heard he passed away, she cried and cried and cried and called me and asked to pass condolences on to his wife, Po said. Mr. Khin is survived by his wife, Alice, also a nurse; daughter Lily, also a nurse, in SeaTac; son Melvyn, an electrician, of Federal Way; son Simon, a software engineer and philanthropist, of Seattle; son Thain Dan, a financial planner, of Lorton, Va.; son Timothy, a financial planner, of Seattle; and three grandchildren.
