Obituary: Leo Elvie Kelley, age 84, beloved father and grandfather, proud veteran of WW II, died 22, 2009, in the loving arms of his children. Dad began his life 8, 1925, on the road; his parents, Robert Kelley and Alice (Waterman) Kelley were traveling by prairie schooner-covered wagon-from Missouri to Washington State when Moi went into labor with Dad in Cabin City, Montana. Dads life continued to be an adventure from then on. Dad was the youngest of nine children when the Kelley family settled in Yakima. He completed eighth grade and then went to work, bringing in money to help support the family. He enlisted in the Army when he was 17, spending his 18th birthday in New York harbor, waiting to be shipped out to Germany as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne Division Screaming Eagles (although he often wondered why anyone would want to jump out of a perfectly good airplane.). Dad was one of the few men in his unit to survive the Battle of the Bulge. He had many friends die in his arms; in fact, his parents received a KIA (Killed in Action) letter because one of those friends was also named Leo Kelley--and the letter was sent to the wrong family. Moi, his mom, never believed the letter, never stopped believing dad was still alive. Dad was severely wounded in the hip by a sniper during the Battle of the Bulge, but made it home to his family after spending a year in an English hospital learning how to walk again. Until the day he died dad kept a toy paratrooper, complete with parachute, above his bed; he said it reminded him that life was worth living. In 1948, Dad met Anita Desmarais at a dance and they were married within a year. All his life Dad said Mom was his one true love. settled in Moxee where Dad helped our grandfather, Henry Desmarais, with his hop fields. Dad loved the outdoors and worked outside all of his life, from working in the hops to grafting fruit trees, working at a logging mill and finally, after retirement, volunteering at a fish hatchery to educate children on salmon conservation. Dad was also an active member of the Civil Air Patrol and earned his pilots license when he was 60 years old. Education was vitally important to Dad; he pushed all seven of us children to study hard, value knowledge, and never stop trying to learn. When Dad was in his late fifties, he decided to go back to school to earn his high school diploma. He didn want a GED-he wanted the real thing! He received his diploma the same year his youngest daughter graduated from college, and it was one of his most prized possessions. Dad also had the patience of Job; raising seven children on a farm meant there was never a dull moment. From spears through the kitchen window (Karen and Chris), an elbow through the same window (Cheryl), Moms row of prize roses being mowed down by a new driver (Cathy), rescuing his two youngest children from the root cellar (Diedre and Enid) after their older siblings accidentally closed the door and stood on it, flocks of geese and ducks roosting under the dining room table (nobody claimed responsibility for THAT one) to the birth of his first grandchild (Cindys son Brian)-dad took it all in stride. Hed just turn, look at you, smile, and shake his head. Dad always said that his greatest treasures were his grandchildren. He taught his granddaughters how to waltz, his grandsons how to play poker, and loved going to see all of his grandchildrens achievements, whether it was soccer in the snow, kindergarten programs in the gym, band concerts, plays, parades, dances, high school and college graduations.he loved them all and tried hard never to miss one. He especially enjoyed watching the TV series Walker, Texas Ranger with his two youngest grandchildren (and laughed when that became the name of their new hamster), camping with all of us, and was a faithful Mariners fan. He had a sweet tooth and usually managed to talk his son-in-law Andrew into making him apple pie (even though he wasn supposed to have it) and would always pronounce it o-digious! My capacity has been sufficiently surrensified! Dad was preceded in death by his first wife, Anita, parents Robert and Alice Kelley, his siblings, Fred, Esther, Hester, Helen, Ada, Joe, Earl and Arthur. He is survived by his children: Catherine Downie, Cynthia (DuWayne) Judd, Karen (Tracy) Kelley, Christopher (Rose) Kelley, Cheryl (Robin) Myers, Diedre (John) Young, and Enid (Andrew) Kelley-Oman, his grandchildren: Brian Race, Jason and James Kelley, Elisabeth (Shane) Brown, Jenee (Grant) Myers-Twitchell, Shannon Myers, Daniel, David and Rebekah Young, Daniel and Nathan Watrous, Gabriel and Anita Oman, and three great-grandchildren: Christina, Melissa and Benjamin Race; two honorary daughters, Pat Lahey and Tedi Kelley, friends Sid and Terri Keevil, and several nieces and nephews. The Kelley family would like to thank Highgate House for their loving care of Dad in his last months, Dr. Ryan Crafts for his constant support and friendship, Robin Preston at Family Medicine of Yakima, Olga and Jonathan of Memorial Hospice, Dr. Ajmal Kazman, the Veterans Administration, and all of our many friends and co-workers who have provided us with care, love and encouragement during this difficult time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Yakima VFW Post #379, c/o Langevin-Mussetter . We love you Daddy. The paratrooper has landed, and the Screaming Eagle is soaring. Viewing will be , 27, 2009, 12 noon until 2:30 p.m. at Langevin-Mussetter and the Vigil Service will begin at 3:00 p.m. A Memorial Mass is , 28, 2009 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Catholic Church. Private burial with full Military Honors will be at Holy Rosary . |
