Obituary: The Life of Walter (Walt) T. Kirschner

Dad was born in Akron, Ohio, 5, 1919, the middle of three sons born to Mary Jane and John Kirschner.

He grew up in Akron and Detroit, Michigan, where the family traveled to follow their fathers work as a Tool & Die Maker. He was blessed with a strong, close-knit family, and this served them well through the difficult depression era. Sadness came with the tragic death of his mother from illness when Dad was fourteen. It was a loss he profoundly felt and frequently expressed throughout his adult life.

Following high school, and with the depression still in effect, Dad joined the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) Program, working in Idaho at clearing timber for road and trail building. This was year-round work, including the frigid winter of 1939-40.

From the CCC, Dad enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1940. Serving with the 145th Infantry Regiment, he trained incoming recruits as the unit built up their forces following the onset of the Second World War.

Dads regiment shipped out to the South Pacific in the spring of 1942, where he served until the conclusion of the war. His unit saw combat in several regions, including intense fighting at Bougainville Island (Northern Solomons, Papua New Guinea), and Luzon (largest of the Philippine Islands).

Combat wounded and a Purple Heart Veteran, Dad lost his sight in one eye from an exploding shell, but soon returned to the fighting. Among many decorations and citations, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal and the Philippine Liberation Ribbon.

Resuming civilian life in late 1945, Dad made the decision to live permanently in southern California. He took his first post-war civilian job in plant maintenance at the Kirkhill Rubber . There, Dad advanced to Maintenance Superintendent, where he oversaw the companys expansion to a new factory in Brea in 1952.

Another highlight of Dads arrival at Kirkhill was his introduction to his soon-to-be wife, LaVonne. Her friend, Grandpa John Kirschner introduced them, believing Mom and Dad would make a good couple. Grandpa John was indeed a good matchmaker, and they were married a little over a year later in 1947.

Dad switched from manufacturing to the more rapidly growing home building industry in the late 1950s. He worked for the Ross Cortese Corporation, first as a carpenter and soon as Construction Superintendent, building the Rossmoor home development at Los Alamitos, and later the Rossmoor Leisure World projects at Seal Beach, Laguna Beach, and finally Cherry Hill, New Jersey. Declining to relocate the family to the East Coast, Dad returned to management positions in the California construction industry for the remainder of his career.

Dad joined Freemasonry in 1950, embarking on sixty-two years of masonic life that included service as Worshipful Master for Lakewood Lodge in 1965. He joined the Scottish Rite of Masonry, completing the 32 degrees of masonic and Scottish Rite ritual. He became a member of El Bekal Shrine Temple, participating in their philanthropic work, and served on the Shrine Patrol Unit. As long as his health permitted, he was a fixture at most Lodge and Shrine events.

Dad followed Mom into membership in the Lakewood Chapter (later Meridian Chapter) of the Order of the Eastern Star, where he was Worthy Patron in 1988. He was very supportive of Moms activities in the Eastern Star, which included her year of service as a statewide officer, and annual trips to state Grand Chapter.

Dad was very active in his sons youth activities. He was involved with the Scout Troup. He served as Senior Advisor with the Lakewood Chapter of DeMolay and coached the DeMolay baseball and basketball teams. He also managed his sons little league baseball team for two years.

Dad enjoyed many forms of sports recreation. In his younger post-war years, he participated in company softball and basketball teams. Dad and Mom were top bowlers, winning many league trophies. A passionate golfer for over forty years, Dad persisted in trying to master the game as he had so many other avocations.

Dad also was an avid reader, finishing a book or two each week. He was skilled at watching television sports while simultaneously playing a radio and reading. It was most amusing to see!

In their retirement years, Dad and Mom traveled extensively around the world. Taking both cruise ships and land tours, they covered all of Western and (free) Eastern Europe, the British Isles, Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, the Caribbean, Panama Canal, Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific Islands. It was particularly memorable for Dad to revisit sites where he had served at war over forty years before.

Back at home, Dad became active in the American Legion Post 496, of Long Beach-Lakewood. For many years he represented the Legion at the annual Lakewood Memorial Day Program. He became ordained as a non-denominational minister, and officiated at numerous weddings and funerals.

From the late 1990s until her passing in 2004, Dads primary focus became the care of Mom throughout her long and difficult illness. When it developed that she required round-the-clock skilled nursing care at a convalescent home, he was certain to visit her every day, and Moms favorite yellow roses were frequently at her bedside.

In his own senior life, Dad gracefully adapted to his increasing physical limitations. With each loss of some capability came a new replacement activity. As was typical, when he could no longer golf, he took up painting as a replacement hobby. He studied and learned the use of the computer. He took up cooking, experimenting with complex recipes, and baked exotic breads.

Dad taught us wisdom and grace during his most difficult moments. He carried a positive outlook throughout numerous illnesses and surgeries, and it was this attitude that no doubt enabled his inner peace, happiness, and longevity. In this he was an inspiration and example continued...
