Obituary: It is with deep sorrow that the children of Raymond DeWitt Keiser announce his death on , 3rd. Ray died at home, peacefully, and would have turned 93 years old on 24th. Ray was born to Gertrude and DeWitt Keiser and raised in Newark, New Jersey (he actually still has friends from Newark's Central High!) Ray joined the Navy in WWII where he met his wife, Patricia Eileen Marshall, in Clatskanie, OR, where his ship was docked after a 2-year tour in the Aleutian Islands. Pat led the band, Patty and the Dive-Bombers playing at the base dances (the only girl). Ray saw her play the piano and sing; he asked her out and they became a couple. the war ended, Ray returned to Newark, NJ but soon sent a telegram to Pat, who was attending nursing school, to ask for her hand. She agreed and while they were married in Ventura, CA, the newlyweds settled in Newark, NJ, where their three children were born. Ray became a firefighter for the Newark Fire Department just like most of the male Keisers, including his father and his brother, Ed. While fighting fires he attended Rutgers University at night, studying transportation, and on days off from the Fire Department, he loaded freight for the Flying Tiger Line (FTL) at Newark Airport. eight years with the Newark Fire Department (incidentally, his wife Pat, was working as one of Newark's first female police officers), he accepted a position in Sales with FTL. Soon the Keiser family moved to San Mateo, CA, having accepted the first of many promotions Ray would receive. Rays promotions always resulted in a move to another new area; sometimes the Keisers even repeated locations but still ended up living in 19 different houses! At FTL, Ray met many other airline families who became life-long friends. People such as the Stokes family, and the Zettlers, Whites, Kerns, Morris', Alberts, Ives, Shakleys and the Wadda families. It is here at FTL that Ray began to literally travel the world and he continued to do so as long as he was able - well into his late 80s. many years Ray left FTL to master other aspects of the transportation industry including the shipping, rail and trucking components. He retired from his own consulting firm, Keiser & Associates, whose primary client was the Port of Oakland, in 2010. Ray lost his wife Pat in 2004 while they were living in Brentwood, CA. Ray is survived by three children, The Right Reverend Michael Keiser, Jan Keiser and Susan Varanese; a daughter-in-law, Angie and a son-in-law, also named Ray. Ray had four grandchildren: Alex, Daniel, Katherine and Natalie, one great granddaughter, two great-great grandchildren, a new great grandson, seven nieces and three nephews. Ray is pre-deceased by his parents, by his brother Edward Keiser and sister in law Dolores, his brother in law, Jack Marshall and sister in law, Nancy. Ray became a great grandfather earlier this year, adding another great-grandchild to the wall of fame next to his computer - covered with 8x10 photos of all his loved ones. Finally, when Ray and Pat moved to Brentwood, CA in 2000 they developed friendships with wonderful neighbors on Tangier Terrace. Throughout the last 17 years these families have watched out for each other. His children wish to thank them all, especially, Catherine and Kathy Godby, Sylvia and Glen MacBride, Joe Little, Mel Katzer and Joyce Elliot. Ray wished to forgo the traditional funeral service and asked instead for a "big party." |
