Obituary: CAROL ANN KEWISH 1943-2012 Provo, Utah Our beautiful wife, mother, grandmother, sister and friend, Carol Ann Mallea Kewish, returned home to her Heavenly Father on 6, after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She was our Christmas Carol, having been born on Christmas Day, 1943, in Gooding Idaho, the sixth child of Joe B. Mallea and Josephine Marie Shurts. Carol was raised on a sheep ranch in Shoshone, Idaho, and loved the life of growing up amid the cottonwoods and creeks and the wide open spaces of the Magic Valley. She attended elementary and secondary school in Shoshone and was an honors graduate of Shoshone High School. Carol was co-salutatorian of her class, yearbook editor, cheerleader and homecoming queen during her senior year. She was awarded a scholarship to attend Brigham Young University, where she studied Business Education and Office Management. Carol met Chuck in a Social Dance class at BYU and they became engaged just prior to her graduation. Chuck and Carol were married for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple in 1964 and recently celebrated their 48th wedding anniversary. Following graduation they moved to Pensacola, Florida, where Carol became a Naval Officers wife and homemaker. their military service, they returned to Provo for graduate studies at BYU, and then moved to Boston for further educational pursuits. Following graduation they settled in Anaheim, California for an extended period of time. During all of their various endeavors Carol balanced her career with her homemaking and mothering, and was able to accomplish much more than anyone would expect. Carol used her degree to work in business settings, in the legal profession and finally obtained a California secondary teaching credential and taught high school for a number of years in Northern California. She was a master teacher and loved her students without reservation. Following retirement, Carol went to China where she and Chuck taught at China Foreign Affairs University in Beijing for two academic years. Carol developed a great love for her Chinese students as well, and remained in touch with many of them in subsequent years. returning from Beijing, Carol and Chuck were called to serve a senior mission as Public Affairs Missionaries at the Area Office in Hong Kong. Carol was so happy to be a missionary, which had been a lifelong goal of hers. Throughout her life, the principles of the Gospel and her wide activity in the Church were her guiding star. She served as a leader and a teacher in the School, Young Women and Relief Society both in her ward and stake, and forged many eternal relationships through her work in the Kingdom. Likewise, she devotedly mothered her seven children, and was their greatest friend and advocate, and the person who taught them true principles and made certain that they lived by what she had taught. Carol studied painting, had a beautiful soprano voice, was an accomplished seamstress and, over the years, made many an Easter dress for her four daughters. Carol loved babies, hers and those presented to her by her children, the music of the Church, teaching Heavenly Fathers children, and sending five of her kids out as missionaries to five different countries and then reliving their missions with them upon their return. She also loved British drama, the rocky beaches of Oregon, China, Fools Day, and Halloween. She was extremely proud of her Basque heritage and enjoyed returning to Northern Spain to meet her relatives in the old country. She was also proud of her pioneer heritage, and loved to read of the activities of her great-grandfather, Peter Shurts, in Nauvoo with the Prophet. She was indeed a woman of all seasons. Carol is survived by her husband, Chuck, and her children Carol Cobb, Newport Beach, CA, Kristina Wihongi (Vaughn), Alpine UT, Heather Condiff (Graigg), Kearney, MO, Joe Kewish (Liz), Provo, Holly Lesue (Dave), Provo, James Kewish (Natalie), Glen Allen, VA, and Jonathan Kewish (Ashley), Provo. Surviving siblings include Joe Mallea ( ), Twin Falls, ID, Louie Mallea (Loretta), Tremonton, Nickie Smith, Tremonton, and Dick Mallea, Boise, ID. Also dear to her were her many nieces and nephews. Carol had 24 ½ grandchildren, all of whom she doted upon and loved dearly. She was predeceased by her parents and two sisters, Jody and Leonora. Services will be held on , 11, at 1 PM, at the Mojave Chapel, 3050 Mojave Lane in Provo. Friends may call from 11:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. before the services on . A viewing will be held on , 10, from 6 until 8 PM at Walker Sanderson , 646 E. 800 N., Orem, UT. Interment will be in the Provo City . The family would like to express heartfelt thanks to Dr. Theresa Werner, Esther Kannapel, Rachel and Stephanie, as well as Dr. Patrick Soisson, at the Huntsman Cancer Hospital, who cared for Carol for the past two years, as well as the staffs at UVRMC and Aspen Ridge. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to the Perpetual Education Fund or the Missionary Department of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
