Obituary: Kammell Kouri was born to Lebanese immigrants from Marjeyoun, Lebanon, George Kouri & Helen Swyden Kouri. He entered into life on May 19, 1935 in Brinkman, Oklahoma. He was the youngest of six children who grew up in this tiny town. He moved to Dallas when he was a teenager, and spent the rest of his life in the town he grew to love. Just after his 17th birthday, Kammell enlisted in the United States Marine Corps through the permission and signature of his sister Laveta. Kammell proudly served his country for eight years during the Korean War as part of the 1st Battalion, 4th Marines, 3rd Division, FMF. He enlisted as a private in training in Dallas in of 1952. In 1953 he began working in the “mess hall” before becoming a private first class as a machine gunner by May. He also received the Good Conduct Medal in of 1953. In 1954 Kammell was promoted to the machine gunner unit Squadron Leader before becoming a Corporal that . He traveled to Japan for field exercises, combat training, and amphibious operations. In 1954, Cpl. Kammell Kouri was transferred to Camp Pendleton as a military police officer. He was responsible for placing and caring his fellow soldiers in “the brig”. He continued to serve as an “M.P.” until the end of his service in 1960. Once a Marine, always a Marine. “Ooh-Rah!” Kammell was an entrepreneur. He opened a furniture store in Dallas called Sam’s Furniture. He always wanted to be called Sam after his grandfather, so when he opened the store, everyone started calling him Sam! He worked very hard at the store and only recently retired from it. During this time, Kammell married Kathy Melton. She was a wonderful woman and they were very happy. were married over 20 years until her passing. Kammell took in her son, Ryan, as his own. Kammell loved to travel. He enjoyed going to Padre Island or crossing the Mexican border for a visit, while in South Texas. He also enjoyed sports. When he wasn’t working, you could find him in his brown leather recliner in the living room watching all “ball games”; the Rangers, the Cowboys, the Mavericks. This recliner was his favorite place to catch a wink or two as well. Kammell also liked watching documentaries or history. Kammell was a family man. He loved being together with his siblings, nieces and nephews. would gather to enjoy Lebanese food and cultural traditions. Kammell even found some local markets in the metroplex where he could get his Lebanese food fix. As Kammell and his siblings got older, they still liked to visit their hometown of Brinkman, Oklahoma. This little ghost town has pretty much disappeared. All that remains is a grain silo and town cemetery with an old sign that says “Brinkman”. But Kammell and his siblings, still gathered in Brinkman to pay their respects to those who’ve left before them, and catch up with long time friends they’ve kept in touch with. Family always came first. Kammell was a patriotic man. He was also outspoken and stubborn at times. He liked to be in control. He was also very dedicated to his family. This was our Kammell. On , 30, 2014, Kammell was called to meet his Maker. He was met in heaven by his wife, Kathy Melton Kouri; his grandparents; his parents, George & Helen Kouri; his brothers, Woodrow David Kouri & Namon George Kouri; and his sister Laveta Kouri Morris. Kammell’s life and legacy will continue to be honored and celebrated by his son Ryan Melton of Dallas; his sisters: Catherine Kouri Massad of Coppell & Effie Faye Kouri Smith of Wichita Falls; and generations of nieces, nephews that he was very close to and loved as his own children, plus many other relatives and close friends. |

Bright-Holland has scheduled graveside services for 10:00 a.m. , 31st, at Evergreen with Dr. Mike Lawson officiating. There will be a gathering of family and friends from 6 – 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Regenia, the daughter of Randolph “Randy” & Ruby Nell Hill Satcher, was born Feb. 9, 1948, in Honey Grove. She graduated from Paris High School. Her career at Hollywood Vasarette spanned a number of years before she began working as a caregiver. She was still working at the time of her death. He earned a Masters degree in art, was active in Community theatre and became an English teacher. He taught in the Spring Branch Independent School District for twenty years. He was awarded Teacher of the year in 1991-92 and Outstanding English Educator the next year. Obituary: William Christopher Chris Kountz, 83, passed away 4, 2014 in Lubbock. He was born 7, 1931 to William and Kathleen Kountz in Pecos TX. He graduated from Ft. Davis High School then attended Sul Ross University where he graduated in 1952. Chris then entered the U.S. Navy and served from 1952 to 1958. He married Lillian Franklin in 1955. military service he attended Texas Tech where he received his Masters degree in 1960. He began teaching Vocational Agriculture in Garden City in1960 and also taught in Alpine before coming to Monterey High School in 1965 where he taught until his retirement in 1990. Chris was President of the Vocational Ag Teachers Association of Texas from 1983 to 1984. He was a member of the VATAT Board and the NVATA. Chris was active in agriculture events all his life including judging many events across West Texas. He was an avid Texas Tech fan and a member of Oakwood Baptist Church. Chris is survived by his daughter, Kristi Mathis and husband Keith of Bushland, TX; brother, Van Kountz and wife Shirley of Lubbock; grandsons, Kory and Kameron both of Bushland; numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife. Visitation will be 9, 2014 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM in Resthaven . services will be 10 at 10:00 AM in Resthaven's Abbey Chapel with Gil Lain, Pastor at Amarillos Paramount Baptist Church officiating. Burial will be in Resthaven Memorial Park. Contributions in lieu of flowers may be made to the Bushland High School FFA Booster Club, POB 215, Bushland, TX 79012. |
