Obituary: Joseph Edward Kobell, age 89, left the lives of his friends and family on 21, 2013. His presence will be sorely missed. Born in New York on 11, 1923, he was a husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather and a man of quiet strength and wisdom. Joe joined the Army Air Corps during World War II as a tail gunner on a B24. He was with the 461st Bomber Group and flew 40 combat missions. He was known to have said, it was his military experience that gave him a deep appreciation for the simple things in life. Upon completions of his missions, he returned home and met Betsy, who later became his wife of 64 years. During his courtship he graduated from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute as a chemical engineer and then worked for Celanese Corporation until his retirement. One of his many gifts was that of creating wooden 19th century model sailing ships. This was a quiet reflection of his life. He was a patient, intelligent, and wise man who enjoyed lifes simple pleasures. As a father, he was a coach, a math tutor, protector and above all, a sounding board. He always supported the dreams and aspirations of his children, but had the unique ability to keep them grounded. He was a quiet observer, who sat back, smoked his cigar and took in everything around him, and only then, offering sage advice. When he spoke there was never a question about what he meant. The patience he had teaching his children math was remarkable. Only one of his six children really understood anything about x=y2. He was known to look over at her, roll his eyes and share a special a smile, especially when he was asked if X stood for Xavier. His beliefs in his family were strong, but he allowed them to try things on their own. Two special stories note, that after one of his children negotiated a price on a new car, the salesman changed the conditions and raised the price $900. Joe, wearing his beloved cap, cigar in mouth, simply uttered two words, NO SIR! Later, when the transaction was completed, the salesman ended up giving them $100 back. One of his sons had a dream of homesteading in Alaska and building a log cabin just using a hand saw. a few months, gentle Joe sent him an anonymous gift of a chain saw, and the home was completed before the first snowfall. As his family grew with new generations, his role as a grandfather opened a whole new world for him, he was in awe they loved his pancakes so much. Big Joe gave his grandchildren love, laughter, comfort and could make them feel as they were the most important person in the world. He was the only adult who could watch Looney Tunes with them and yes, they all agreed, Bugs Bunny was the best. He had a gift of making the lighting of his cigar, helping him clean the pool, sitting on his lap or listening to him read a story for the hundredth time, the memories of a life time. Racing him in the pool, was one of his highlights, he always let them win . . . but only by a little. Joe was survived by his six children, Buddy, Joey, Patti, Elizabeth, Mary, John, twelve grandchildren, niece Eileen Faught and Cousin Margaret Burke. He will be forever in the hearts of many and his love of driving to the HEB will live on their memories. Put your driving gloves on, place your Irish cap on your head and drive on Big Joe. ROSARY MONDAY, FEBRUARY 25, 2013 7:00 P.M. PORTER LORING NORTH CHAPEL MASS TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 26, 2013 10:00 A.M. ST. JOHN THE EVANGELIST CATHOLIC CHURCH 4603 ST.
