Obituary: Leslie L. Kleinecke was born 4, 1925 in Houston, Texas and passed away peacefully on 13, 2015 in Kingwood, Texas in the company of his beloved daughters. He attended Jefferson Davis High School in Houston but his formal education was delayed when he quit high school to join the U.S. Navy in World War II. He returned to Jefferson Davis after his honorable discharge in 1946 and graduated high school in 1948. He and Joan were married that same year. During their 66 years of marriage Leslie made many friendships through years of service with Southern Pacific Railroad, HL&P, his own small antiques business, and his service to Heights Church of Christ. Over the course of his 89 years he was blessed with a loving wife, two daughters, four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. There are so many ways to describe this wonderful man. Leslie was a loving son, husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend who will always be remembered for his unconditional love, friendship and guidance. His unwavering love for his wife of 66 years serves as an inspiration to us all. Leslie served in the U.S. Navy during World War II from 1943 to May 1946. His parents had to give written permission for him to drop out of school just two months shy of graduation to join the war effort. The recruiting office told him he could finish out those last two months of eleventh grade once he returned from the war. However, when he was Honorably Discharged in 1946 he learned that 12th grade had been added to the high school curriculum and that he would be required to re-take the entire year of 11th grade plus the new 12th grade in order to graduate high school. Leslie was a good and honorable man who will be remembered for his decency, countless acts of kindness, strong work ethic, and service to others. Although he never reached the rank of officer he was always a gentleman. He was proud to have served with the more than 12 million men and women who delivered the world from evil during World War II. He loved his family fiercely and was very proud of each and every one of them. He took special pride in the fact that his two grandsons, Leslie and Phillip Padilla, and his eldest great-grandson, Aidan Fake, each earned the rank of Eagle Scout. Leslies parents passed on their love of animals to him. He was a member of the FFA and won multiple ribbons at the Harris Fair and the Houston Fat Stock Show and Live Stock Exposition, including a Best in Show for his Grand Champion Capon. In turn, Leslies love of animals and aptitude for outstanding achievement in FFA were passed on to his grandchildren who won multiple Grand Champions, Reserve Grand Champions, and First Place Ribbons. Leslies love of restoring life to items other people discarded as trash was remarkable. His mother told the story of him making regular visits to he dump to salvage items he felt were useful. Over the course of many trips he was able to make a bicycle for himself. This hobby turned into a passion and eventually he opened a small business restoring antique ceiling fans which he then sold and serviced for many years. In fact, during late 2014 the family received a call from a ceiling fan customer who originally purchased fans in the late 1970s who wanted to know if Leslie was still working on fans - or if he had any relatives who had taken over the business. There is no doubt that Leslie was frugal, but he joked that he inherited that trait from his Scottish mother. He never threw anything away as he felt all items had some sort of usefulness. His father was a tradesman specializing in carpentry, painting, and refinishing and passed on his love of working with his hands to Leslie. To all of our family, and many friends, he was Mr. Fix-It. If you needed a tool or something repaired, he was the man to call. He enjoyed helping others by building or repairing things but he especially loved teaching others how to build and repair things for themselves. When Leslie did something, it was done right and he taught his family to do the same. He believed people should take pride in every task they undertook, whether great or small, and that the satisfaction of a job well done should be as meaningful as receiving pay. His perseverance in dissecting the aspects of a task and then following that task through to completion was legendary among family and friends. He met any and all adversities with a positive attitude and remarkable work ethic. These are the legacies he leaves behind. A fathers legacy is not the riches, possessions, or worldly goods of any kind; it is the way he lived, the lives he touched, and the promises he always kept. Leslie did not consider himself a charitable donor or volunteer; he simply devoted himself to things that were important to him and to those he loved. He gave freely of his time, knowledge, and elbow grease. His family will remember the countless hours he spent performing tasks that others would want monetary compensation for. He was awarded an Honorary Lifetime Membership in the P.T.A. in recognition of Distinguished Service Given to Children and Youth in of 1971 when his youngest daughter was still in elementary school and he continued to actively donate time and energy behind the scenes to school projects through his fourth grandchilds high school graduation over 30 years later. He acted voluntarily as maintenance/caretaker for his wifes church home for over 20 years even though he was never formally a member of that church. He was instrumental in forming and remained active in the Neighborhood Watch Program for years. He passed on his passion for helping others to his family by leading by example. He was preceded continued... |
