Obituary: Jereld N. Kester Jereld N. Kester (Jerry) was born May 28, 1943 in Kansas City, Kansas, and passed from this life on 7, 2013 after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. Jerry was a man of high integrity, loyal to his family and church, and whose faith was a part of his everyday life. Jerry was a people person who loved to learn new things and to spread that learning further by educating those around him. He liked a challenge and was a tenacious problem-solver. He was a hard worker who recognized that trait in others and had high expectations of those around him, always willing to lead by example. Whether during his 39 years of loyal corporate work with IBM or through his contributions in leading domestic and global mission trips and projects with his church, Jerrys work ethic never waned, and in fact most would say it increased over time. Jerry lived as a boy in Kansas and Missouri with his family who moved frequently as jobs became available for his Father in the construction industry. When Jerry was 10 years old, the family moved to Mexico City for two years where his father worked as a construction foreman. Jerry picked up Spanish very quickly and was often called upon during those years in Mexico to serve as interpreter for his Father and construction crew. Jerry often credited that time of his life to opening his eyes about how difficult it was to be a minority. This valuable lesson and the broader meaning about inclusiveness - we are all Gods children regardless of race, religion, gender, sexual preference, etc. - is something that Jerry believed strongly in and passed along as a core value to his children. In tenth grade, Jerry moved to Moberly, Missouri. His sisters reported for years afterward the special day when Jerry came home from school and announced to his Mother that he had met the most beautiful girl in the world. That girl, Beverly, would become his wife several years later and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on 25, 2013. Jerrys intention to become a pharmacist changed after taking his very first data processing class, during which he fell in love with the emerging world of IT. Beginning his career with IBM in 1967 immediately after graduating college with a double major in Data Processing and Math, Jerry was on the ground floor of an emerging industry. He was loyal to IBM and spent 39 years in various Finance, Marketing, and World Trade positions with the company in New York, Missouri and Texas, most of his time being spent as a Systems Engineer in Marketing support. While company loyalty was important to Jerry, it was the constant new opportunities within IBM that kept him engaged and interested. His intellectual curiosity helped him contribute not only to his company, but also to pass along his new knowledge to those around him. He enjoyed teaching with IBM, when working with global teams in Japan, China, Holland and Germany. Jerry was able to balance his career with his dedication to serve others. In his early adult years in New York he volunteered with the Boy Scouts (although he never had a son!), and was involved at Southminster Presbyterian Church in Springfield, Missouri, as Elder, Treasurer, PNC chair, and youth group chaperone for mission trips. Jerry spoke often about key people who influenced his call to mission work. The Rev. Bill Stype of Springfield, Missouri, a very close family friend and pastor encouraged Jerry to participate on several youth group trips, including some to a Navajo Indian reservation in Arizona. Also, the Rev. Dale DePue and the Rev.Moises Rios modeled for Jerry the meaning of grace and service and opened his eyes to international mission opportunities. Jerry worked alongside Dale on his inaugural mission trip to Honduras. This was the first of more than 10 Honduras mission trips Jerry participated in and/or led with Grace Presbyterian Church of Plano. Jerry went on multiple mission trips to Guatemala, working first with Pastor Moises on a construction project, and later fulfilling a new passion to provide Clean Water filtration systems for Guatemalan children and families. Jerry also participated in and/or led more than 20 trips to New Orleans and Galveston after Hurricanes Katrina and Ike. In 2009 Jerry co-led a mission trip to Brazil after a years planning with Pastor Honorio of Graces partner church, the Brazilian Fellowship. This mission included construction, medical and dental clinics as well as a 38 hour boat ride along the Amazon River and its tributaries to their destination. Jerry inherited a love of singing and for 17 years sang in Grace PCs Sanctuary choir. In the past several years, Jerry rekindled his love for cycling. He participated in many charity bike rides in Texas including the MS 150, and recently completed a 200-mile, four-day ride along the Katy Trail in Missouri, in 2012. Jerry relished spending time with his cycling friends and enjoying the beautiful outdoors. Jerry is survived by the family he deeply loved and to whom he had an unending loyalty: wife Beverly Bowers Kester of Carrollton, Texas, daughter Karin (John) Hart of Boise, Idaho, daughter Jennifer (Loye) Troxler of Littleton, Colorado, daughter Yvonne (Jeffrey) Hayes of Liberty, Missouri, sister Becky McGinty of Madison, Missouri, sister Virginia Bargar of Clark, Missouri, sister Mary Shoaf of Ottawa, Kansas, sister Janice Pugh of Carrollton, Texas, and eight wonderful grandchildren whom he adored. He was preceded in death by parents Virgil D. and Yvonne Kester of Westphalia, Missouri. In celebration of Jerrys life donations may be made to: The Grace Presbyterian Church Clean Water Endowment Fund; The Presbyterian Disaster Assistance at (presbyterianmission.org/ministries/pda); or Heifer International at (heifer.org). Family and friends will gather to celebrate Jerrys life this , 16, 2 p.m., at Grace Presbyterian Church, 4300 West Park Blvd., Plano, TX 75093. A reception will follow the continued... |

Obituary: Beverly B. Kester (Bev) was born 7, 1943 in Moberly, Missouri, and passed from this life on 3, 2013 after a short battle with ovarian cancer. Bev was beloved by her family and friends, a true role model in every aspect of life. Her favorite scripture Romans 12:12 states Rejoice in hope, be patient in suffering, persevere in prayer. Next to this passage in Bevs study bible, she had inscribed how to live. This truly encompasses so many aspects of Bevs life. Whether during her extensive 30+ years in education or through her many contributions in church ministry, Bev personified positive energy and spirit, patience, creativity, a sincere understanding and acceptance of others and their ideas. Bev lived as a girl in Moberly, Missouri, the second daughter to William and Ramonette Bowers and younger sister to Barbara. As she did her entire life, in her younger years, Bev thoroughly enjoyed the arts. She studied music extensively, took piano lessons and later, participated in musical performances as a choir member, soloist and accompanist. While in High School, eautiful Bev was active in her church and in community service, enjoyed cheerleading and became a coming Queen, as well as an outstanding student. In tenth grade, young Jerry Kester moved to Moberly, Missouri. His sisters reported for years afterward the special day when Jerry came home from school and announced to his Mother that he had met the most beautiful girl in the world. That girl, Beverly, would become his wife several years later and they celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on 25, 2013. While in Moberly, as young married adults, Bev and Jerry spent a lot of time with Bevs sister Barbara and her husband Glenn. enjoyed wonderful events and fellowship together in Missouri and New York and also where Barbara and Glenn lived later in life - Richmond, Virginia and Conyers, Georgia. Bev and Barbara often reflected that their husbands relationship was more like brothers than brothers-in-law and the four of them were inseparable throughout their lives. Upon getting married, Jerry and Bev attended and graduated from Moberly Junior and then moved to Kansas City, Missouri where Bev helped to support Jerry by working at a bank while he went to college to study IT and Data Processing. While in Kansas City, Bevs first daughter, Karin, was born. As Jerry was the first person in his family to ever graduate from college, it was important to Bev that he attend his graduation. At Bevs insistence, while she and newborn Karin were in the hospital, Jerry left quickly to participate in his commencement. Shortly after Jerrys graduation from Emporia State University, the family moved to New York where their other daughters, Jennifer and Yvonne, were born. While there Bev enrolled in the State University of New York at New Paltz where she later graduated with degrees in Early Childhood Education and Music. Music and Education became constant forms of passion for Bev throughout her life. She spent many years with the public school systems in New York, Missouri and Texas in varying roles. In addition to being a third and fourth grade teacher, Bev opened a preschool while in Springfield, Missouri, always enjoying time spent with that precious age group. She also served as a Parent Educator with a new start-up called Parents as Teachers, a home-based parenting education program. Combining her love of the arts with teaching, Bev also served as Picture Lady for several years, which allowed her to study various artists and teach children about different art forms of historical relevance. Importantly, many of these school volunteer and paid activities allowed Bev to volunteer at the specific schools in which her daughters attended. Bev was always able to balance her career with family and her dedication to serve others. In her early adult years, Bev volunteered with 4H, the Girls Scouts and was involved at First Reformed Church of Walden, New York and Southminster Presbyterian Church in Springfield, Missouri as Elder, School teacher and director, youth choir leader, and youth group chaperone for mission trips. Bev was involved in music in every church she belonged to throughout life, offering her time and talent both in leadership positions, and also as choir member, soloist, volunteer organist and pianist. More recently, Bev became highly involved in various opportunities at Grace Presbyterian Church in Plano, Texas. While there, she was a committed volunteer, an active congregation member and even on staff. She served as Elder, Christian Education Director, Childrens Choir Director and often gave Childrens sermons during worship. She also participated in many mission trips and initiatives including providing Clean Water filtration systems for Guatemalan children and families. Beverly is survived by the family she deeply loved and to whom she had an unending loyalty: daughter Karin (John) Hart of Boise, Idaho, daughter Jennifer (Loye) Troxler of Littleton, Colorado, daughter Yvonne (Jeffrey) Hayes of Liberty, Missouri, sister Barbara Hulett of Conyers, Georgia, and eight wonderful grandchildren whom she adored. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 50 years Jereld N. Kester, and parents William S. and Ramonette Bowers. In celebration of Beverlys life, donations may be made to: The Grace Presbyterian Church Adult and Childrens Music Ministry; Family Promise of Collin ; or Heifer International at (heifer.org). Family and friends will gather to celebrate Beverlys life this , 8, 2 p.m., at Grace Presbyterian Church, 4300 West Park Blvd., Plano, TX 75093. A reception will follow the memorial service. |
