Obituary: Kazutoshi Kikkawa passed away in his home in Nashville, Tennessee on 2, 2016. He will be dearly missed. Born in Osaka, Japan in 1931 to Yasusaburo (a successful diplomat, author, and businessman) and Yukio Kikkawa, he learned to appreciate foreign languages and music at an early age. As a middle school boy and young teenager, he witnessed firsthand the sacrifices required by the Japanese war effort and the ultimate destruction and suffering caused by World War II. These experiences shaped his persona and inspired him to pursue a career in medicine. He graduated from Osaka City University Medical School and completed his first internship at the U.S. Air Force General Hospital in Nagoya. Upon the urging of the American doctors at the USAF hospital, Kazutoshi applied for and won a coveted Fulbright Travel Grant allowing him to further his medical studies in the United States. With only 25 dollars in his pocket, he landed at St. Anthony's Hospital in Rockford, Illinois. There he met Carolyn Vaile, a nursing student, and the two fell in love. Under the terms of his Fulbright award, he was required to return to Japan after completing his 3 year internship and residency. Kazutoshi and Carolyn continued their courtship corresponding long distance. Against the wishes of her parents, Carolyn eventually followed him to Japan in 1962; and the two were married in an old Catholic church in Shukugawa, Japan. The couple then returned to the U.S. and Kazutoshi became a U.S. citizen. brief but memorable stints in Chicago and Pittsburgh, they eventually settled in the small, rural town of Sayre, Pennsylvania. Dr. Kikkawa worked at the Robert Packer Hospital and Guthrie Clinic in Sayre from 1967 until his retirement. He touched the lives of countless patients and worked industriously to advance the field and profession of radiology. He published numerous papers, served as a Senior Instructor in Radiology at Hahnemann Medical in Philadelphia, authored a medical textbook on angiographic practice and, in 1982, was named a Fellow of the American of Radiology (ACR) - a high honor bestowed on less than 10% of all radiologists. He also traveled across the U.S. for the ACR conducting accreditation surveys. Outside of work he had many interests and hobbies -- the tango, travel, golf, photography, restoring antique cameras, composing piano music - and he pursued them with similar vigor and diligence throughout his entire life. his retirement, Kazutoshi and Carolyn enjoyed traveling the world together. were married 49 years, until her death in 2011. In the years following, he moved from Sayre to Nashville to be closer to his only child Kaz Christopher, his daughter-in-law Kim, and his grandson Anderson Vaile Kikkawa. Ever proud of his “old fashioned Japanese values,” his meticulous industry, passion for learning and improvement, creativity, and gentle humble sprit continue to inspire. The family will host friends at a private memorial at his home in Nashville on , 16 at 5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Vanderbilt Ingram Cancer or the George Eastman Museum. |
