Obituary: Florence Hunt Kiester 1918-2015 Longtime Columbia resident Florence Hunt Kiester , 97, died , May 19, 2015 after a brief illness. Florence was born on 5, 1918, in Waynesville, NC, to Mary Campbell Hunt and Henry Wadsworth Hunt. She grew up in Greensboro, NC and graduated from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, then known as Women’s . A gifted pianist, Florence taught piano and toured during the summers as part of a musical group. college, Florence went to Washington DC where she trained as a secretary. She excelled, and was offered a position with the FBI in Washington, DC. She turned that offer down and went instead to work in the New Orleans office, where she met and married the love of her life, Charles Kiester. While her husband Charles served overseas during World War II, Florence joined the Red Cross, taking her place in the “greatest generation.” An active member of Washington Street United Methodist Church, Florence shared her gift and love of music as pianist for countless children’s school classes and was beloved at Brennen Elementary School where she was the “music lady” for so many. Florence was an accomplished cook and gracious hostess. She loved entertaining and lavished her gift of hospitality on her friends and family. Her birthday celebrations, whether for her own children and grandchildren, or later for her contemporaries, were legendary, and invitations were coveted. She touched so many lives, giving unstintingly of her time, her talents and her treasure. As her grandson Michael noted, she was the Queen of Hearts. Florence was preceded in death by her parents, her brother Henry Hunt and husband Charles Kiester. She is survived by her four children, Karen Borowski of The Woodlands, TX , Susanne Murphy of Tallahassee, FL, Cathie Daetwyler of Colorado Springs ,CO, Charlie Kiester of Winter Park FL, as well as nine grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She filled our lives with love, good food, beautiful music, and a firm foundation of faith. How we will miss her! Florence spent the last years of her life at Still Hopes Episcopal Retirement Community, surrounded by her many friends and a loving, caring staff. The family would like to thank all those who cherished her. A memorial service will be held at Washington Street United Methodist Church, 1401 Washington Street, on , May 31 at 2:00PM. A reception celebrating her life will follow immediately at the Guignard Mansion, 1 Still Hopes Drive, West Columbia SC 29169. Obituary: Susan Sue Kiernan died at Agape Hospice House in Columbia, SC, early morning, 25, 2015. The cause was complications related to pancreatic cancer. She was 66 years old. SC Cremation Society, Lexington is assisting with arrangements. Sue was born in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn, NY, to Frank Giovannone, a steel worker, and his wife Mary (nee Lamia), a homemaker. An only child, Susan moved with her parents to Valley Stream, Long Island, where she graduated from Central High School. She was married to David Kiernan for 20 years and raised two daughters, Denise and Christine. She was a band mom, a dance mom, a chaperone, and more, for her kids and their friends. While married, Sue traveled across the country and the sea, but it was when she came to the southeast that she truly found her home. A self-described southern gal born in the north, Sue lived in Columbia for nearly 33 years. She worked in bookkeeping and sales, most recently for J.J. Haines and Co., Inc., the nations largest floor covering distributor. Over the years, she has won several awards for her sales achievements. A remarkable cook, Sue loved nothing more than to fill her kitchen with family and friends and to share her Italian culinary talents. She was an avid runner who competed in many races, both locally and throughout the southeast, including more than a decades worth of appearances in the Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta. Though raised Roman Catholic, Sue chose to be baptized again as an adult after accepting Jesus Christ as her savior, and her faith was an integral part of her day-to-day life. She supported various charities and missions. being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last year—the same disease that had taken her father, Frank—Sue inspired many in both word and action. She shared her difficult story with others, encouraging them to live life while they could. Following her first bout of chemotherapy, she traveled to Florida with her family and fulfilled a long-held dream to swim with dolphins. Her spirit during her sickness astounded everyone who met her as she outlived even the most optimistic expectations of the medical community. Sues family remain indebted to the caregivers from Compassionate Hospice and Agape Hospice House who helped ensure that their mothers final days were comfortable. Sue is survived by her mother, Mary Cipriano, of Columbia, and by her two daughters: Denise Kiernan, who lives with her husband, Joseph DAgnese, in Asheville, NC, and Christine Kiernan Fisher, who lives with her husband, Todd Fisher, in Greensboro, NC. A memorial service will be held at 4 PM on , 29, at Columbia Crossroads Church, 2723 Ashland Rd., Columbia, SC, 29210. Friends may share memories via Sues online memorial, hosted by the South Carolina Cremation Society: www.southcarolinacremation.com/obituary.
