Obituary: I will lift up mine eyes unto the hills, from whence cometh my help. My help cometh from the Lord, which made heaven and earth. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved; he that keepeth thee will not slumber. Behold, he that keepeth Israel shall neither slumber nor sleep. The Lord is thy keeper, the Lord is thy shade upon the right hand. The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night. The Lord shall preserve thy soul, the Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this day forth, and even for evermore. Psalm 121 |

Obituary: M.e.m.our's of Father Once upon a time long ago in the spring of the year 1920, among the blossoming trees and fields of flowers, there was born a little boy of Chul-san Province in an enchanted land called Korea. Where the Rose of Sharon emerged out of the remnants of the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1897). He was not of royal lineage, but a commoner into a caste system hierarchy. The youngest among his five siblings, with two step brothers and three sisters. He was the most favored as the only son of the beloved wife of his father Kim, Ye Taek, who converted to Christianity in order to receive consent to his proposal of marriage. However, it was his mother Ju, Dok Tae that was the exemplary role model from whom he was taught in his formative years, molding his character and personality (Gen. 2:7). As a lad, Master Kim was slight of figure and lacked stature nor handsome, yet he was chosen by God. For the Lord judges not by outward appearance but the heart and the qualities possessed within ( I Sam.16: 7). His childhood memories of the crowds that would gather around his mother, bowing in reverence along the unpaved alleys of the impoverished nation made a profound influence in his life. Eventually he realized that the peasants regarded her with high esteem, as a midwife she provided care for the underprivileged of their town. For the practice of ministerial charity, the people dubbed her " Ju-nim". And when she walked from the Giwajib (shingled gable rooftop) homestead toward the village passing the children in the courtyards, dressed in the traditional gown of hanbok costume, they would whisper to one another,"the angel" is coming. The son was christened "John" by his mother and in youth the Bible (literal translation 1892) was the first book he read (II Tim. 3:16). As plenary scripture, the word of the Lord spoke to him and he was summoned. When he graduated from Myong Shin Elementary School in Sun-chon, where he received his academic education, he attended Young Nak Junior High School. Then continuing his studies through correspondence, as was rudimentary in that era.. In 1950, when the Korean War divided the country, forcing him to abandon his frail, matronly sixty nine yr. old sainted mother leaving her with his family and fled, joining the estimated three million refugees that defected, seeking moral justice and social reform in the southern region. The communist regime's doctrine of 'Ju Che', ideology that "man is the master of all things", abolished religion for state atheism. Incited a massive exodus, out of the oppression of a dictatorship, for the freedom to practice ones faith and 'Hope' of religious liberty. It was a month long march on foot, beyond the 38th parallel. On a perilous journey enduring the deprivation of all human necessities and suffering through the elements in the cold climate of a frigid winter blizzard, yet he never looked back (Phil. 3:13). He rest his head at night on stones, developing a permanent bald scalp at the crown, resembling a yarmulke. It would become a constant reminder of his deliverance. While dreaming of 'Bethel', he fell unconscious. Then at last he awoke from the nightmare, emaciated and under physical duress, this noble man (II Corin. 12:9) had survived the ordeal, arriving at his destination. In Pusan, revived to begin anew, he took up the cross in the pursuit of the salvation of his fellow man. By 1951 through 1958, he commenced on seminary training and was ordained in 1956 as pastor of the Presbytery in Seoul. Gradually, he attained social status through a reputation of activism and diligence, for which his ministry became publicly renown. But in private, the emotional heartache of the severed family bonds remained, leaving him with a void so painful that he could never speak of them again. As a bachelor, he felt an overwhelming loneliness and yearned for the love and support of a mate (Gen. 2:20-24). It was then an associate Pastor Bou-Pil Suh arranged a meeting of introduction, to a virtuous lady by the name of Kim, Ok Soon (sharing the common surname, of different origin), who was a school teacher and the daughter of Kim, Soh Sul and Quan, Gah Oh. As the eldest daughter, she had raised her six siblings and she too grieved loss of a brother, Jong Tae who was conscripted into the military as a teenager and killed in combat. The courtship (yun-ae) was not one of romance but a chaperoned betrothal (joong-mae) sanctioned by the clergy, for they were 'beshert' and destined to be together. The wedding was held on the 30th of Oct. in 1959, and the couple took their vows to be joined in holy matrimony. Then In 1960, the reversal of the primogeniture. Their firstborn child, was a girl of inherent ancestry. A female into a patriarchal society where women had been subjugated for centuries. The civil war had ended in an armistice, without a resolute declaration of peace. Subsequent to the Treaty of Amity and Commerce (1882) the opportunity to seek democracy in the western continents became possible. Just as the European forebears had escaped religious persecution, the U.S. represented the 'promised land' where "all men are created equal". In transition, the minister sought employment in an apprenticeship with a publisher of ecumenical literature to earn capital and raise funding. The printing press invention of the metal removable type during the Goryeo era in 1377, produced a higher quality Gutenberg Bible at a low price, accessible to the mass populous. several years, Rev. Kim was finally able to pursue the "American dream", although his new bride was reluctant and apprehensive about the venture, he could not be dissuade from his 'Great Commission'. Then in a "déja vu", again he left his loved ones behind, arriving in Oregon, the autumn of 1961 on a student Visa. Upon completing his prerequisite studies, continued... |
