His father was an immigrant from Teisnach in Bavaria, and George grew up in a German-speaking household. He attended school in Milwaukee, graduating from Riverside HS where he was a member of the Track Team. In his teens he worked at a local nursery which was the seed for his lifelong love of gardening. Following HS he worked his way through college as a radio and TV technician. George graduated from UW-Madison with BS in Electrical Engineering in 1952, the first college graduate in the family. His early professional career began in Milwaukee with General Motors Co where he was a Technical Representative for navigational computer and fire control weapon systems. In 1956 was given a two year assignment in Germany at Ramstein Air Base and, because of his German language skills, he served at Erding, a German AF Base under NATO contract near Munich. He also served bases in Holland, France, and Fr. Morocco. Prior to leaving Milwaukee in 1956 he met Gen, his Schatzie, and they were married at the Ramstein Air Base Chapel in 1956. resided in Munich, memorable for the birth of their first son and meeting for the first time George's paternal family. During this time he provided technical coverage for customers in England, Holland, and Italy. In 1987 he accepted a position as Technical Integration Engineer with United Technology in Huntsville, AL. This position became the highlight of his career in aerospace engineering as he was awarded recognition by NASA for his work on the shuttle re-qualification team which developed, following the space shuttle Challenger disaster in 1986. He returned to Raleigh and worked several years for the State of North Carolina as Facilities System Engineer until retirement in 1993.
